Sloppy Plot-Hole in Avengers: Age of Ultron

These is a major plot hole in Avengers Age of Ultron, and I'm talking about Loki’s scepter aka the Mind stone. Is Marvel giving the fans the middle finger?

So after the whole craziness of the Avengers started to fade in my head, I realized that there is a major and very sloppy plot hole in the movie (in fact, it’s a plot hole that started in Phase I).

The plot hole is the “Loki’s scepter”, that now we all now is the mind stone. We first saw the staff/scepter right in the begging of the first Avengers movie.
Thanos - for some reason that only God/Kevin Feige knows – gives Loki the scepter, and go and take over Earth for him, and in the process get him the Tesseract (we will be back to this stupidly in a moment). So Loki goes to Earth, and we get The Avengers.

By the end of the movie, in the big climax fight in New-York, the Tesseract is shielded by some invisible force field, and so Black Widow gets her hands on the scepter and uses it to shut down the cube and therefor to close that Stargate in the sky. Why and how does the scepter can cancel the Tesseract? I don’t know, but I will let this one slide.

So battle is over, Avengers have won, but before they can go and eat the Shawarma, they stand above Loki who just wakes up after the Hulk smashing that he got. And you can clearly see that Black Widow is holding the freaking scepter in her hands, damn, she even stands right next to Thor!

So after all of that, Thor takes Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard, but for some unknown and illogical reason, he leaves the scepter on Earth, with humanity! Why???

Thor saw the power of the freaking scepter, he knows that there is something alien with it, and this is not a device to leave on Earth. Why in the blue hell will Thor will allow the humans (us) to keep the bloody thing? Did he forget about it? Did he say something like: “hey, Black Wi…I mean Natasha, this staff thing looks good on you, please, you keep it…”? Or did Thor just went with the Asgardian logic and said that too many powerful artifacts cannot stay on Asgard (just like the stupid Aether/ Reality Stone). I mean, how does it even make any sense?

Now I’m ok with Hydra getting their hands on the scepter, because they infiltrated Shield, so maybe they stole it or something.
Now I was ok with all of that even after that post credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where we see that Hydra have the scepter.

Now let me ask you this, if Thor didn’t really care about the scepter in Avengers, then why in the hell he is in such a rush to get it back in Age of Ultron?

In the opening scene, they go on that mission to get the scepter, the same stupid scepter that Thor could have just taken 3 years ago, when it was right next to his bloody face! Stupid Thor, how irresponsible can he be?

Now, I’m aware that these are just movies, and there is no reason to be angry and take these movies too seriously, but still, this is just stupid.
This is Marvel thinking that I’m stupid or some 12 year old kid that thinks that Marvel movies are the Holy Grail.

So yes, this is a very big and very sloppy plot hole.
But back to Thanos, the lazy titan. We all know that he wants to get those Infinity Stones. Before the Avengers he needed 5, because he already had the mind stone in his possession. But Thanos decided to buy a dollar with another dollar, so he gave the mind stone to Loki just so he could get the space stone. Thanos is so lazy, and Marvel is making him to be so stupid.

Either the is a dumbass and he didn’t know that he has one of the Infinity Stones in his hands, so he gave the scepter to Loki, thinking that it’s just some mind controlling thingy.

Or, he knew what it was, but he decided that the best way to take over Earth and get the space stone is to put the mind stone in the hands of Loki, and in a sense gambling with it. Either way it makes Thanos to be super stupid.

But I have to ask the question, why? Why does Thanos needs all of these middlemen to do his work for him? Now I get it, it’s cool that someone does the dirty work for you, but why? It’s freaking Thanos, can’t he just get the stones all by himself? He had one, he knew that another one is one Earth, why not just go and take it (well then Avengers will never happen). He knew that about the power stone, but yet again he sent somebody else to get the stone for him.

This just makes so many plot points in both Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy pretty much the same. Thanos needs a stone, so he sends someone to take it for him, as he promises to that bad guy that he will take over/destroy a world for him.

All of these stuff really makes my brain hurt, because even though these stuff are “minor”, they really make me just angry. It just proves to me that I should turn off my brain when I watch these Marvel movies, but then, what is the difference between the Marvel movies and the Transformers movies?

Couple of points:
- was Thor aware that was an infinity stone?
- Priorties, get Loki & space gem safe, then stop wars that are breaking out across the realms #Thor2
Then help with collateral damage on earth and find other artifacts.

On the Thanos points, does he want to keep his identity hidden, there's been speculation on theories that, he's tried the collect the stones previously.
If the stones are on other parts of the universe it makes sense he would send multiple people to retrieve them to save time.

Ok, first of all, this is nothing to really get angry about. Yes, the fact that Thor leaves the Sceptre on Earth is a plot hole, but it's really not that big, and all cbms have them. He thought it was just a gem that was connected to the Tesseract, and probably assumed that only Loki could use it to control minds. In fact, more than likely he assumed that without the Tesseract nearby, the Sceptre was useless (remember, Fury thought that the Sceptre was powered by the cube.) The same thing goes for Thanos giving it to Loki. He probably had no idea that it contained another Infinity Stone, he probably thought it was just connected to the Tesseract, and so thought Loki would need it to help retrieve the Tesseract. (On a side note, did Thanos even give it to Loki? Or did Loki get the Sceptre some other way? I don't remember the movie ever saying specifically that Loki got the Sceptre from Thanos.)

So, it's really not that big a plot hole. Thor was leaving a device that he didn't really think was that useful with Fury and Shield, so he thought it was safe. Once Thor discovers that the Sceptre is in the hands of Hydra instead of Shield, he decides to retrieve it. As for how the Sceptre cancels the Tesseract, that is easy. Obviously one Infinity Stone can cancel another one.

@JimFinn

It didn't really matter if he knew or didn't know it was an infinity stone. Why didn't he take the dangerous magical weapon from earth? Why?

@dcmarvel86- dethpillow and specialkail make some pretty good points. I think what you need to do is turn your brain ON while watching these movies. Then maybe it would make more sense to you.

It is more than likely that Thanos would have known the scepter contained an Infinity Stone. What I bet is that Thanos perhaps underestimated the extent to which Loki, much less humans, would be able to use the mind stone to its full extent. Thor probably would not have known what the scepter contained, at least until Thor 2's events. Still, it's rather odd that Thanos would risk losing one Infinity stone to get another one. Perhaps he considered the mind stone the least effective of the stones (given Loki's rather limited use of it). Or perhaps he really though Loki would have been more successful.

Does thanos want the infinity stones in the hands of people already weakened but not destroyed, remember he thrives on the thought of death so maybe its a challenge. Xandar was battered by Ronan, Asgard by the dark elves and earth first by hydra then by ultron. All are ripe for the picking when it suits thanos.

One plot hole: The Mind Gem that helps create Ultron turns him evil, but when put into Vision it makes him good? Can someone explain that

Thor is not the most intelligent hero. I do not think he knew that Loki had another Infinity Stone. He just wanted to get the Tessaract and Loki back to Asgard. Thanos is playing a chess game. I think he wants all Infinity stones in play. It makes it easier for him to collect if he knows exactly where they are.

I was wondering the same about Thanos giving a gem away. And the fact that Thor didn't realize it was in the staff, or Loki. I mean Loki is supposed to be so smart, he could have used that thing to do so much more.

What really bothers me though is that Thanos hasn't done shit on screen. He's the most powerful being on the planet? Ok, let's see some of that.

Someone earlier said that it could be once he was informed that Hydra had it and not Shield, they began searching for it. I mean THETA protocol in AoS was bringing the Avengers in to retrieve it. We dont know how long after Coulson sent that message to Hill that they started searching for it.

Ultron is Stark. Or atleast Stark's IDEA of what protecting the world means. Ultron said something very much along those lines to Cap (I have to watch it again). It was very quick but important. And Thor explained it himself, he didn't realize it was an Infinity Stone at first, when he did he said something along the lines of "3 Infinity Stones can't be a coincidence" and immediately flew off. There are explinations, they aren't completely spelled out for us cause I think Joss thinks 2 things.. 1 most moviegoers won't notice and 2 fans that DO notice have just enough built in explinations to understand. I have 2 guys I work with, both have seen all the Marvel movies, both like them alot and neither of them have even the smallest clue that there is a much bigger plot at play. I was trying to explain Infinity War and was getting a dear in the headlights look.

I just wish the stone wasn't yellow why not green or something. I agree with the others. Also do you guys think that Thor has been holding back his power. Because in his vision Hemidall told him he should show his full power?
