Cillian Murphy On His BATMAN Screen Test: "I Never Considered Myself Bruce Wayne Material"

Before he landed the role of Scarecrow in Batman Begins, Cillian Murphy tested for the role of The Dark Knight himself, and the A Quiet Place Part II actor has now looked back on his audition...

As we know, several actors read for the lead role in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins before Christian Bale landed the part, and some of them even screen-tested in the Bat-suit - including the man who would go on to play Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in the movie.

Footage of Cillian Murphy performing a scene in Val Kilmer's Batman Forever costume (with Man of Steel's Amy Adams reading as Rachel Dawes) was officially released as a special feature on the Dark Knight trilogy 2013 box set, and the A Quiet Place Part II actor has now looked back on his brief brush with playing the Caped Crusader.

“I don’t believe I was close to landing that role,” admits Murphy when asked about his screen test during an interview with THR. “The only actor who was right for that part at that time, in my estimation, was Christian Bale, and he absolutely smashed it. So, for me, it was just an experience, and then it turned into something else. It turned into that character, Scarecrow, and it turned into a working relationship with Chris. So, I think back very, very fondly on that time, but I never, ever, ever considered myself Bruce Wayne material.”

Murphy did indeed become a fixture in Nolan's filmography, reprising his Scarecrow role for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, before going on to appear in Inception and Dunkirk.

Do you think Murphy would have made a good Batman? You can check out footage from his screen test below.

Murphy had a great Batman voice.

Man just looks like a villain. He had a great Batman voice though.

He would make for an interesting Hush imo

@BlackBeltJones - I could see him as Jason Todd too.

He does have a great Bruce Wayne/Batman voice though, so I wouldn't mind hearing him in the role. In live-action, he was perfect as Scarecrow though

He shouldn’t sell himself too short.

His Batman was good.

All he really needed...a better haircut and a nice combination of protein/creatine and 20 pounds of muscle.

Bingo!

@billnye69 - yeah I think him not knowing the ins and outs of a countries political status can easily be forgiven. It’s not like he said anything outright racist or derogative...

Plus doing all those press conferences, day in and day out, you’d have a brain fart speaking English, never mind trying to speak a foreign language all the time throughout lol...

@Blergh - sorry, what?

The guy stated a film would be released in a country that wants independent freedom (despite it already being self-ruled..) from the Chinese government, a government that’s already known for their shady business appeasements to please their governing bodies.

And because he got a little tiny fact like that wrong, he’s lost all your credibility?

[frick], you should come to Britain and see how pi*sed off Scotland get when celebrities call them part of England lol

@Se4M4NSt4ine - lol it's more the apology to China to appease them because they don't accept Taiwan as a country.

He bent his butt directly to China

@Blergh - It sucks massively, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he lost all credibility. It's the studio telling him to apologize to save money. Same thing happened to Mark Rufalo apologizing on Twitter for his Israel/Palestine comments the other day; he probably had a bad call with Disney about the Hulk. I would agree that they lost some credibility for selling out their moral position for a job.

I like Cillian, but the guys so freaking small. He’s like 5’6/7? I don’t mind the height thing with Batman, but imagine the people who complained about Keaton being too small...

Bale was a great choice. I definitely liked his chemistry with Ledger in Dark Knight. Not a fan of Begins but Bale played the part well.

@DarkDetective - just wasn’t that good to me. I was a fan of Keaton and Bale was ok but Scarecrow was a weak villain and Ras Al Gul was kind of boring. If you watch the choppy action scenes it really isn’t pleasing to the eye.
They did better with the Dark Knight.
DarkDetective
DarkDetective - 5/27/2021, 8:32 PM
@slickrickdesigns - I personally hate Keaton’s Bruce, he acts very awkward most of the time, specially with women (yeah, the playboy millionaire Bruce Wayne) and his Batman is better, but let's just say I never ever pictured Batman giving a wacky smile to some thug before murdering him with a fricking bomb. Bale (despite the laughable voice) is great. He has all the morals and most important traits of both Batman and Bruce. Begins is a great exploration of his character and motivations. Well, I think so.

He could have been a pretty good choice. If being skinny is a disqualifier, then Pattinson shouldn't have gotten anywhere near the role.

Makes me wish we got to see more screen tests for Different roles.
Off the top of my head I've seen ones for James Bond and Lois Lane

Also maybe actors talking about roles they didn't get. I know Brie Larson does on her channel

He is being humble. He would have been a better pick for the role. Bale is solid but he just doesn't have the dramatic acting chops this guy has

Cillian has quite chiselled, sometimes effeminate looks. Never bought him as a Bruce Wayne type, but in the makeup, I think he might have been an effective Joker.

@Godzillakartt - People give Pattinson a lot of crap but Christian Bale wasn't huge when playing Batman either. The biggest he looked was in Batman Begins then his physique started to decline. Go back and see TDKR he's more on the skinny side in that one.

I think he would be able to pull off the look more today now that he's matured. Back in the day though, it just didn't look right. Nolan had good intuition seeing Scarecrow in him.
