AP News reports that actor Pat Hingle, who played Commisioner Gordon from 1989 to 1997 died at his home in Carolina Beach shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday after battling blood cancer. He was 84 years old.

His career spans six decades, and he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1958. His latest role was in Talladega Nights released in 2006.

Although many do not appreciate the 1990's Batman films, you still need to recongnize that without these films, who knows where movies of comic adaptations would be. I personally think he did a good Commissioner Gordon, even though I am a huge Gary Oldman fan, Hingle did it in feature film blockbusters first. I thank him for his contribution to Comic Films, and I send many blessings to his family and friends.

...The bat signal grows a little more dim. R.I.P. Pat Hingle -saintc

Amen to that. Reading the comics, Gordon was one of the most important, and present, characters in the series, yet he was barely in the original films. Oldeman is a much better Gordon, but Hingle was good.

It is unfortunate that we remember him from his underrated role in Batman. In my opinion, one of his best performances was in Sharon Stone's "The Quick and the Dead" as the bartender.

Just because Forever and Batman and Robin were god awful, doesn't mean that 90's Batman flicks were bad. Only half of them sucked and the other two were righteous. Batman and Batman Returns are still awesome. He was in those and I feel bad for him that he was in the other two. First Catwoman and now the Commish?... how many old batman actors and babe actresses have to die

And them some - let's not forget the loss of:

Frank Gorshin & Burgess Meredith - the original (and for many the definitive) Riddler and Penguin - the original Alfred, Alan Napier - Pat Hingle's 60's pre-decessor behind Comm Gordon's desk, Neil Hamilton - the largely overlooked Jeep Swenson as the under-developed Bane in B&R...

oh, and one Mr Bob Kane.

For a franchise spanning 50 years on screen alone, a wealth of acting talent and memorable characterisations does ultimately mean the eventual loss of too many familiar faces.

Condolences to Pat Hingle's family - may they know that his gift brought a smile to our faces.
