Phillip Seymour Hoffman As Penguin

Phillip Seymour Hoffman As Penguin

What would Phillip Seymour Hoffman look like as Penguin? I found a pic that will show you, fake or real?

Before Eddie Murphy took on the role of Edward Nigma in "Gotham".... Does everyone remember the Johnny Depp, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman casting rumors? They both debunked it as fake, but frankly it is not even known what characters will be in the third insallation of the recent Batman films, and it's not even known if a third Nolan film will even happen at all. I hate to be doing this, but I'm going to go ahead and feed the constant "Gotham"... rumors.

I always thought Hoffman would of made a pretty good Penguin, but he stars in mainly artsy pictures nowadays... I couldn't really see him starring in a Comic Book Movie. Earlier today, a fan/rumor starter sent an email to the Editor over at Cinema Blend. His email stated that WB was following through with the The Dark Knight 2 and Hoffman was being prepped for the role of Cobblepot! Not only did he claim it was true, but he also sent in a photo of a proposed Make-Up test snap shot. This is supposed to be Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the make-up and outfit. Much like Cinema Blend, I firmly beleive this picture to be a Photo Shopped fake...

I've posted the picture below, and in the comments section I want to hear your opinions on two things: 1)Is it fake? Obviously, and did the faker do a good job? 2) Wouldn't Hoffman make a damn good penguin? -saintc

Wow, This looks cool, I hope that if the penguin is featured in the next film that he goes along the same lines as this pic for the look. I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman would do a good job in the role, I just don't think he would take the part if it was offered to him.

This concept is silly...Penguin is just a regular guy...short, fat, big nosed regular guy. This is the one villain who's comic iteration fits perfectly into the hyper-reality concept as is. Please, have we learned nothing from Danny DeVito?

If the Penguin is included in the next movie I think he should lean more towards being a money-laundering club owner than a major threat. A club would also be an ideal place for cameos by various well-known villains to show that the so-called freaks are gaining prominence. Although Hoffman is a great actor, I think Paul Giamatti should also be considered. He looks more similar to the character and I think he’d come up with an excellent voice.

yeah, maybe the penguin as a nightclub/fightclub owner and killer croc as a bouncer...lol.i think it would be great if they went to "the son of the demon" books for inspiration. They have already laid the ground work for it and everyone know that Ras aint dead.

Shaman and I agree that the Penguin wouldn't be good for a Nolan movie and that Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be WAY better as Detective Bullock.

I, however, believe that if they were to do a Penguin, Jim Gaffigan would be a suitable choice.

And why does the Penguin have to have freakish looks?

I liked Danny DeVito and that portrayal of the Penguin. YES, it was WAAAAAAAAY off base as to who the Penguin is, but I dug it.

Anyway, Philip S. Hoffman is great, and would make for a good Penguin. As would Paul Giamatti. As for Mr. beyond the pale Jim Gaffigan, i'd have to see something from him to make me think of him for the part. Just doesn't seem right to me.

He should just be a nightclub owner, with a tophat and monocle and big nose. Nothing freakish or mutated about him. Just a guy. That picture, BTW, while it is obviously a fake, it is GOOD, and it is rather creepy.

Penguin should be a mobb boss who owns the club that the remaing crime bosses (after the dark knight) uses to launder money. Ion is right they shouldn't make him a mutant. He can be fat, big nose, and were's a tuxedo.

Club owner who worked with mob money, spent his family fortune to fight it in courts, lost everything. Wants revenge on Batman and wants Wayne's money.

Christopher Nolan has done a great job creating a completely changed up story line based around all the characters of Batman. There isn't one comic book that ever had two-face burned in a fire to get his look. Rachel Dawes is completely new. And Joker wasn't created by Batman in his movie. (Even though we never learn how "he got those scars.") Nolan is a genius. I think if he incorporated the riddler, the penguin, catwoman, black mask, holiday killer or whomever it will be genius!!!

for example, the mayor of gotham is going to be in a lot of heat because of all the deaths of top official's of gotham. someone can rise up to challenge him for leadership. someone with a deep dark sinister plot of revenge against a city that has outcast his once proud family name. whether it's Roman Sionis(Black Mask) or Chester Cobblepot(Penguin), one of them can run on the platform like that of the Emperor in Star Wars. Play the leader of both sides mafia and mayor to pit gotham into a war on itself. And the directions Nolan has taken changing everything up, who says penguin has to be a short, fat, pointy nose guy, I could see Joaquin Phoenix as playing the roll of the penguin. Get Eddie to play the black mask, Depp to play the riddler or the next joker, Weisz or Beckensale to play the catwoman.

Batman Begins had 2 villians, dark knight 3, let's see 4, 5 or 6 in the next one and roll it into a 2 part movie with us finding out two-face actually wasn't dead. Batman and gordan secretly put harvey dent in a basement top secret corner of gotham asylum with wayne's money funding the attempt to help heal dent. let the movie start off with stories of a holiday killer who pray's on villian's, corrupt cops and mafia. Her first murders happen to be on Valentine's Day, first killing officer Ramirez, then Moroni who is recovering in the hospital, then Scarecrow, then breaking into Arkham to kill joker is confronted by batman. Let the catwoman turn out to be rachel dawes who is out for revenge and who ends up also being holiday killer, who ends up being batmans first kill. Show the battle of Gotham from 4 different fronts.

I cant believe people actually want catwoman in the next batman...worst idea ever. Has anyone read "Joker" that was released in november by Azarello?

Killer croc and The riddler definatly stood out most to me as badguys that Nolan could put his awome twist on. Killer croc was just a steroid overloaded goon, not a main badguy, but a 20 min one like Nolan turned 2 face into.

And if you have read it, imagine Johnny Depp as that Riddler, as weird of a person and crooked as he is, that is the best actor for the part, hands down.

People want to see catwoman because shes a great character! it also adds some sexual tension which has been completely absent from nolans movies. killer croc is too out there for nolans universe (unless he wises up and brings in a more fantasy element)..i dont think anything could be done with riddler that can out do the joker so whats the point? Nolan has already stated clearly that twoface is dead as a dodo. penguin as a club owner or something could work as a side villain..but all those people who are saying he shouldnt be short or fat or big nosed, THEN ITS NOT PENGUIN IS IT!..fair enough i dont want to see a grotesque like devitos one but he needs to keep some characteristics from the comic or again..whats the point? Bane could also work but im not sure it would ever happen.

no my votes still on catwoman. meeeeooow

I would think if Nolan had more in mind for the Joker roll they could just plug in Harley Quinn in the spot. Joker is locked away so tight he'll never escape but Quinn is one of those marries dudes in jail types and just takes over where Joker left off.

I dont think they should do the penguin again, not in nolans world anyways. I think Devitos penguin was great! he was freakish and dark, but funny and akward.I dont think he should be an accepted member of society (like a club owner) unless it's a world where people are used to seeing freaks. like rorschach01 said, if he's not at least a bit freakish "it's not the penguin is it"?

I think if any freak could be introduced it Would be Killer Croc. cause a super strong dude with a skin condition, who files down his teeth (like in the comics), would be MESSED UP! and that'd be dope. Besides that, the riddler would be perfect for this with the way they set it up, Batmans an outlaw, I think that the riddler should have figured out at some point who batman is, and batman has to stay ahead of everyone else on the riddles to keep his identity, and get to riddler. and the riddler can use the croc to mess with batman. sorta Hush-esque.

Catwoman would be good too, cause he's more on the wrong side of the law right now, and she could exploit that. but I just feel like catwomans been done. same with that story.

I believe Penguin will be in the next Batman because Cobblepot provides a nemesis for Bruce Wayne. Cobblepot is going to show up and take over the front pages of the Gotham newspapers. Wayne is going to be made to look like a complete tool while Cobblepot will play the humanitarian millionaire. Gotham will be in love with the Penguin. While Batman and Bruce Wayne are despised.

At the end of TDK where are we? Gotham hates Batman, the Mafia is leaderless, Corruption is throughout the police force and even the Mayor seemed a little shady. The people of Gotham are going to look for change.

...The movie starts off on New Years Eve with someone in a police outfit walking into a hospital where Doctors and nurses are blowing horns in celebration of the holiday and it show's the tv which reflects 1 minute til new years. The police officer then walks down a hallway and into a hospital room. On the bed lies Moroni who narrowly escaped death at the hands of Two-face. Moroni opens his eyes to see a gun pointed at his head with a silencer, he utters the words "I... thought you were dead?" It doesn't show the killer, and you hear down the hall everyone shouting HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Then you hear a female voice say Happy New Year. Then the gun fires.

...The next seen is GCN news reporter Engel talking about a Holiday serial killer who has killed Detective Ramirez, the Scarecrow, mobsters and killed Moroni who was recovering at the hospital, all killings taking place on different Holiday's. Then in other news reports of a recent string of cat burglery's with the burgler handing out stolen money to the poor and homeless on gotham streets. Now to the battle for the Mayor's office. Cobblepot has a narrow lead over Roman Sionis(The Black Mask) with the current Mayor not even in the running after being accused of being involved in scandals and failure to lead Gotham in it's darkest times.
...Cobblepot is able to feed on the public's craving for change and as someone who will step into to Harvey Dent's shoe's. He runs on the platform of hunting down the bat and trying to find out who the bat is and bring him to justice. He'll secretly employ the Riddler to find out and reveal to everyone who batman is. Penguin will rise to power, start to reveal his plans as silent head of the newly formed Mafia in competition with the Black Mask for control and as Mayor.

...Black mask also employ's the Riddler to find out the identity of the Holiday killer. When the Riddler finds out who it is and reveals his findings to the Black Mask, a hit is ordered for the Holiday Killer/ Catwoman. Catwoman corners the Riddler in his home and gets him to tell her where the Black Mask was going to be the next day which happens to be Valentine's Day. She lets the Riddler live and also employs his help in breaking into Arkham Asylum with his experise in bombmaking. Catwoman then in a disquise as a hot female tourist goes to where the black mask was going to be, walks up behind him and shoots him in the head.

...An explosion hits Arkham Asylum caused by Catwoman trying to get to the Joker so she can kill him. Batman answers the call thinking someone might have found out about Dent and was trying to get to him. Batman then faces off with the Catwoman and somehow she gets killed before she could kill the Joker. Two-face get's loose by killing the Doctor's helping him and see's the Catwoman fall to her death. Her mask will be ripped off and it reveals Rachel Dawes, and he looks up and see's Batman from where she fell from holding her mask. The Joker escapes in the comotion between him, Catwoman and Batman.

...The Riddler, who hates Bruce Wayne, finds out he is the Batman. So he sets up all these different Riddle scheme's to try and show the world that Bruce Wayne and Batman cannot Coexist. Setting up puzzle's that would make Batman have to be in one place while Bruce Wayne had to be at another. This is where I could see a Robin character show up but not dressing up as the robin, but as Batman at times he can't be. Then the Riddler starts to go mad because he's certain he solved the greatest riddle of all (who is Batman)so in a desperate attempt he kidnapps Bruce Wayne. He plans on blowing up Wayne Towers with Bruce Wayne tied up inside on live TV to prove to the world his revelation. But then at the last momment, Robin show's up dressed as the Batman, moves like the Batman and manages to save Bruce Wayne, But Robin along with the Riddler gets trapped inside the building as it explodes. The movie ends with the cliffhanger of Gotham thinking they just saw Batman get killed and in the final scene it show's a mafia style meeting room with some mobsters and the Joker, Two-face and the Penguin sitting at a table.

I'd like to see the Riddler the most, but whoever Nolan chooses will be great. He could even make Freeze work. I just read the Long Halloween and Dark Victory and a Batman mystery would be cool. I'm sure Nolan could pull it off.

Harley Quinn was my number one choice for a villian. She could do The Joker's dirty work while he's in prison. But that would only work if they replace Ledger.

I don't think we'll see The Mad Hatter, Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy. He seems to be choosing the more believable villians.

If only they would make two more! I want to see Quinn, The Riddler, The Penguin and Catwoman. I always liked how Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne had a love interest and Catwoman and Batman had this wierd flirtatious thing goin' on. And how she was both good and bad. Ugh, but they can't fit all of these villians in one movie. WE NEED TWO MORE! Then seven years later we can have The Dark Knight Returns.

In all honesty, I hope there is not a third Nolan film. I hate trilogies, and I think most of them fail.

In regards to Penguin, I hate it. I think this picture looks as trashy as Watchmen without a squid ending (if you can comprehend that - oh, wait, I can!). Nolan has already talked about Penguin. I believe he said no.

"There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. The Penguin would be tricky." http://www.cinematical.com/2006/10/14/chris-nolan-says-no-to-the-penguin/

And thank goodness for this. It isn't his style. It is too diluted. It would ruin the realism of the films. I will have to admit that Two Face was well done though and thought that was going to be crap until I saw it. He also wasn't the main villain though. Speaking of main villains, not sure why people think that Penguin would make a good one... 'cause from the comics he pulled TDK from, Penguin is quite the pussy. Things that Nolan should have done, in my opinion, if he truly intended to do a trilogy: No Rachel Dawes, Harvey Dent introduced in first or second film, and Joker for the last film because Joker is the infinite nemesis. Joker is too awesome of a villain versus Batman to be replaced... sans Hush, but Batman isn't old enough for that.

So, finally, PSH... yeah, go for it in some other film. Stay out of Nolan's if he for some reason decides to do a third. I'll be surprised if he finds a superior villain to Joker to finish his series.

So SOMEHOW, Two-Face is more believable than a rich nightclub owner who loses all of his Mafia money then loses his family fortune to try and win a settlement and is now out for revenge? Just a normal guy? But somehow, Two-Face...A guy who was burnt severely who now wears a 2 sided tuxedo, has half a normal face and the other half that is COMPLETELY BURNT is more believable?
Hyson
Hyson - 12/30/2008, 2:21 PM
Ion, you make it sound as if the Penguin doesn't look like... A PENGUIN. Hell yeah, I'd believe more that some burnt guy with a messed up tux who's pissed off is out to kill rather than a man who is shaped penguin-like on some of his appendages is Batman's main problem. There ARE burn victims, you know? He would probably look a little more normal had he received the skin grafting. So, yeah, I believe that a Two Face is fairly plausible, and Penguin is not proper for the Nolan films. And look at what you said: "a rich nightclub owner who loses all of his Mafia money then loses his family fortune to try and win a settlement and is now out for revenge." Tell me. Is THAT strong enough for a Nolan movie? Is that better than Batman's primary nemesis, the Joker? No. It'd be one hell of a weak finish for Nolan. Penguin is too much of a fishy vagina to me. Also, what Nolan set up from Begins made TDK what it was. He had the DA's office for Dent, promotions for Gordon, and Joker card at the end of the film. Is there enough backing a Penguin plot? Would you really want to end this series with THE PENGUIN?! Well, I, for one, would not. I think he is a terrible villain and Hoffman would be mediocre at best in comparison to the previous villains.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 12/30/2008, 4:53 PM
Chester Cobblepot DOES NOT look like a penguin. He's a short fat guy with a long nose who wears a tuxedo, top hat and monocle because he's a super rich. He does not have flippers or fins for hands. Or pale, pasty skin, nor was his father Pee Wee [frick]ing Herman. He's just a guy. Nothing to terribly special about him. I was just stating that I find him more believable than Harvey Two-Face Dent. WHO ,BTW, was not a burn victim, but had acid thrown in his face. So where's the critic of that? How come Nolan gets away with changing canonical information, with making an entirely new "universe" with the Batman franchise, but everyone else who changes things get completely and utterly shat upon? I dont understand THAT!

Honestly, I don't care for Penguin, I think he's more believable than Two-Face, but all in all, he sucks. I want Killer Croc. Crazy guy with Hyperkeratosis, who has been experimented on my Crane with the fear stuff and is now psycho and superstrong because he's constantly on edge with all the fear serum flooding his bloodstream. ALSO, he files his teeth down, and when he bites people, the fear toxin in his saliva invade their bodies and THEY freak out. Which makes him more freaked out and crazy and he attacks again and again until the scary thing is gone. I want THAT in a damned Batman movie.
Hyson
Hyson - 12/30/2008, 5:54 PM
Obviously, I have not read where Chester Cobblepot is like how you are saying he is. I'll take your word on it, Ion. How [frick]ing interesting is that though? A guy in a tux that wants to mess with people? Not very. And, Hell, if that really is how he is, sure, he is more believable than Two Face. Nolan's movies are adaptations of the comics; they are not claiming to be print to film exact transposures. The only person who claims that is Snyder (who isn't putting the squid ending in Watchmen). His face got jacked up either way and looked fair for what it was meant to be and do. Go ahead and "shat" on Nolan. That is your choice.

Glad that you don't care for Penguin because he sucks ass. And glad someone likes Killer Croc, but I don't see that happening in a Nolan film. Same story with Solomon Grundy, etc. Those types of villains. I've said it once, and I'll say it again; there is only one villain left who could do it, and that Batman is way older than the one in the current Nolan films - Hush. And Hush would confuse many since he manipulates several of Batman's nemeses.
