"No one cared who I was before I put on the mask."
Well, here's a weird one for you. Bane masks have suddenly become more highly sought after than they were when The Dark Knight Rises was released in 2012, and it's all down to the COVID-19 pandemic! With many states advising that people wear face coverings in response to the virus, the masks have started selling out across costume sites.
They are only plastic, of course, so they won't provide any more - or less - protection than cloth coverings, but it seems a lot of comic book fans out there want to emulate the Batman villain.
David DeJac, a spokesman for Costume.com, told THR that Bane masks started selling out earlier this month. "Looking at sales figures, the adult mask had quite a sales spike in April and early May, which is unusual for this time of year." He noted that there's still a "decent" number of Bane costumes available, "which indicates customers were more interested in the mask only."
Recently, unofficial cloth versions of Bane's mask have also started flooding Etsy, and with PPE so vital for those working in the health industry, people are doing whatever they can get their hands on them.
