In an interview with The New York Times about his upcoming movie, Inception, the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight talked briefly about the success of the last movie as well as the status of the next one...including the fact that the script is finished!

On the success of The Dark Knight:

It could be paralyzing, if you chose to take credit for the success, rather than understanding that when you catch the zeitgeist in that way, that’s a very unique thing. And not possible to explain. Beyond that, it’s in the hands of the movie gods. I think we were extremely, extremely fortunate in ways that I’ll probably never understand. In that sense, I don’t worry about it.

On what he did after the completion of The Dark Knight:

I actually had a really enjoyable period, went away for a month to Florida, relaxed with the family. While we were doing "The Prestige", we knew we were going to do "The Dark Knight". While I was doing "Batman Begins", I knew I was going to do "The Prestige". That’s basically five or six years that you’re completely locked into a creative path. For the first time I was able to step back and go, O.K., what do I want to do now? I’d always wanted to do "Inception". I took six months to finish the script, and I found I could.

On the progress of Batman 3:

The gears are firmly jammed up with this movie. I wouldn’t let them (Warner Bros) put out an impractical date. Put it that way. They know me well enough to know what my process is. I do one film at a time. It’s one of my real inefficiencies. As I start to free up on this film, I’ll be thinking about what to do next. I’m also very fortunate I have a brother I work with. He’s an incredible asset and has been for many years.

On whether his brother, Jonathan, has completed the script:

Oh, yeah. He’s been working on a script for a long time. And working very hard. So he tells me.

Good find. I doubt the third one will be as good as the Dark Knight. I think Deadshot would make an interesting villain.

Well, so once Inception's out and done the real cogs will start moving on Batman 3. Until then, I guess we'll just have to wait.

Inception looks wicked BTW.

It will be hard to top what they did on The Dark Knight, but if they achieve it, if they do a better movie than TDK, a lot of heads will be blown in theaters. And I believe they can I have faith in them.

I kind of feel bad for the guy. You're out promoting what looks to be a great sci-fi/fantasy film and people just want to know about Batman. At least he's being a good sport. Inception looks excellent though.

@Hamm3rtym3- Great choice and one that I would have never have thought of. He does a great job at portraying the mentally ill. OCD Riddler FTW.

I remember immediately after Batman Begins it was announced that there would be a sequel and the villains would be The Joker & Harvey 'Two Face'. They already had plans for 3 films and a basic outline.

I’m also very fortunate I have a brother I work with. He’s an incredible asset and has been for many years.

It might also be noted that it was supposedly He who talked Chris into doing TDK to begin with. All I knew after coming out of the theatre after seeing BB the opening Friday was that I hoped there would be a sequel

They could do it like Zodiac :D
And Ewan McGregor for the Riddler :)

Ya know, if they make Batman 3 with Nolan and co., it will probably be the top grossing movie of all time. The hype would be ridiculously huge.

No offense to JoshW, but how many articles are we going to get as "News" where all Chris Nolan says is that nothing is finished, he doesn't know anything, and whatever he does know - He's not telling.
Let's pleeeeease wait for actual news of casting info regarding Batman 3 instead of posting Nolan saying the same thing to different people...
My heart cannot endure.
