EXCLUSIVE: Batman 3 May Film in New Orleans

Warner Bros hopes to take advantage of the current tax incentives and strike a deal that will move half of the filming of Chris Nolan's next Batman movie to the Big Easy

Although principal photography only recently wrapped on Warner Bros' next tentpole film franchise, Green Lantern, the studio is already hard at work planning for the highly anticipated sequel to The Dark Knight. The latest news on the project has to do with a new, tentative filming location; as executives from Warner Bros want to take advantage of the monumental tax incentives the city has to offer for Christopher Nolan's third Batman installment. It appears the studio's relationship with the New Orleans filming office is at it's peak and neither party wishes for it to end when Green Lantern enters post production in Los Angeles next week.

Location scouting for the untitled Batman project has already begun in Chicago, Illinois, where the two previous films were headquartered. If this new deal finalizes, almost half of principal photography will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana. This deal would be a big help to the studio financially, since it would allow better use of the projected $200 million budget for the film.

The next Batman film is set to begin production between March and April 2011, and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2012.

New Orleans or not, I hope to see more sets this time around, and less on-location filming. Chicago became a little too recognizable in TDK.

I also heard that WB is going to start filming Green Lantern 2 before the first one hits theaters, and that they plan to release 3 GL movies in under 3 years.

Whether the term "may" is included or not, no one else is reporting it and it is the first news on the subject. That makes it an exclusive. It's news that WB is tentatively looking at shooting in New Orleans.

I'm glad they are looking at New Orleans. Any economic boost to that area is needed.

This will never happen. At least not for the big urban scenes. Maybe a few set shots.

The studio may want it to happen, but Nolan will never agree to it. And the studio is kind of at his mercy on this one.

Nolan won't film Batman in New Orleans. The city of Chicago has a soul that it lends to his Batman films, to Gotham City, and he's not going to film the urban scenes anywhere else.

@slimeybug- i agree that would be ridiculous to film the third batman film in new oreleans. Chicago is gotham city and always will be.

Batman busts some drug lords on cruise ships that are anchored near the harbor lol. Hope his batsuit has a floatation device installed. Just in case.

I understand the whole tax incentives but I would stick on filming the Chicago location for the continuity.

"gotham" has been a nickname for new york city since washington irving first used the term—as an allusion to "gothic" literature—due to it's tense, foreboding atmosphere and his feeling that in manhattan one always had the feeling that something grim and supernatural was lurking beneath the surface.

despite the fact that gotham city was created in new york, named after new york, patterned after new york, and has hundreds of stories that reference it's location on the east coast AND its Revolutionary War history (something that is obviously impossible for any city that isn't in one of the 13 original states), batman writers sometimes tried to reference "lake gotham" in an attempt to make it into chicago. but it isn't. it's new york.

so whether it's chicago, new orleans, vancouver or dallas, it doesn't matter, because they're ALL just stand-ins for the only truly world-class city in the country... new york, baby. hahaha can't wait for the hate mail...

They are talking about shooting half the film in New Orleans. The other half can be shot in Chicago. Continuity? This is Hollywood...Set and production work can make anywhere look like Gotham. If they shoot scenes in the warehouse district and swamps around New Orleans, it is still going to look like Gotham. It makes no difference if it is Chicago or not. Gotham has swamps and international harbors and last time I checked, Chicago doesn't have any swamps. ;-) They can still shoot the high-rise scenes in Chicago.

Ah! Conservative values wins again! Lower taxes equal more work. More work brings in more revenue. Now, if the dummies in Sacremonious Sacremento would figure this out, buisnesses may actually return.

Hoorah for Louisiana!

@alternate- you, sir...are an idiot. Washington Irving was not a writer for DC. =P New York- Detroit fot the Northeast.
*speaking of which, any ideas for possibility of the Bat Boat on Lake Michigan? All he's got is a cycle now? Come on. Tunnels=played out. ports, open seas would play into New Orleans areas too right?

@phinehas—you're right... tax breaks DO make more work... when the employer is a behemoth like WB looking to drop 200 million dollars on an entertainment project. now tell me, how many unemployed louisiana teachers are they going to be hiring to make this movie? and when exactly will that 200 mil "trickle down" to the new orleans homeless shelters?

everyone has an opinion, but drop the stupid political crap and talk about CBMs.

AlternateNo4 - 8/8/2010, 11:32 AM
@crazyray—that was a joke, right? you know i didn't say he wrote for the comics... i think you were kidding. new york was known as gotham for a hundred years before there was a batman. still... i love the NY-Chicago rivalry. btw you know why they call it the "Second City," right...? =))

I deffinitley do not want to see Riddler or Catwoman in this movie! They take away from the realism of Nolan's universe. Have a partnership between Black Mask and The Penguin. And throw in a cameo by Deadshot!
