Let me first say that I will be in line for the opening of both The Avengers movie and the Dark Knight Rises. However, one of the two movies will ultimately make more money than the other movie at the box office. I have contemplated five reasons why the Avengers could beat the Dark Knight Rises at the box office. I will Immediately post my five reasons why just the opposite could happen and the Dark Knight Rises could come out on top, to stop any major Fan fighting or Marvel V DC Comments.

Keep in mind, this isn’t necessarily about which movie is the better quality movie, even though quality could and should play a role in box office results. My expectation is that both The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises will be high quality movies, so it might very well come down to other factors as to what tips the scale.

5. Stronger Social Media Campaign – If the Avengers vs. Dark Knight Rises box office battle was fought on Facebook and Twitter, then the Avengers would win in a knockout. The Avengers Facebook page has well over 900K fans, and there are daily updates posted. The Dark Knight Rises Facebook page is stuck around 500K fans, and there have been very few updates this year so far. On Twitter, The Dark Knight Rises started a nice campaign with @thefirerises, but then abandoned it. On the other hand, The Avengers has a strong and active group of Twitter followers.

4. Robert Downey Jr. – While both movies are packed with stars, there are few stars that shine brighter when it comes to raking in the box office dollars. Downey Jr. was the only star between the two movies that was listed on the Quigley Poll as one of the top ten money-making stars of 2011. Also, since Robert Downey Jr. has been known for playing in a romantic comedy or two, his appeal to women is high, and he might be able to bring in additional female viewers who might not typically go to see a superhero movie.

3. 3-D Will Boost Ticket Dollars – While 3-D isn’t the box office draw it used to be, The Avengers will have their average ticket price boosted by a 3-D release of the film. In all likelihood, The Avengers will sell out in many theaters on opening weekend, and even fans who would not normally pay extra for 3-D will likely be forced to opt for the 3-D version to avoid waiting another week to see the film.

2. Early Opening Could Lead To Long Summer Run – There is something to be said for being first. If Avengers turns out to be the great movie that most are anticipating, then the buzz could help it to a very long summer run. It’s the sort of movie that fans might be prone to see multiple times throughout the summer, and by getting started in early May, The Avengers will have longer to rake in the summer box office dollars.

1. Appeals To Families – The Dark Knight Rises will likely live up to its dark title. Families with younger children might stay away out of fear that The Dark Knight Rises is too violent and scary for younger viewers. While there is also violence in The Avengers, it seems to have a decidedly lighter feel. Parents will more than likely view The Avengers as a family movie, which means it could appeal to a much broader demographic than The Dark Knight Rises.

Nice read! Like you, I will at both movies on opening day, but None of these points hold any water. 5: of course the avengers has stronger media support now, its released in 2 week tdkr comes out in over 3 months. 4: nolans 2 batman movies has outsold rdj's 2 ironman movies. Just the facts. 3: yes 3d ticket prices helped pirates 4, dotm and hp8 make buttloads of money, but it didn't do much to help thor and cap at the box office. 2: tdk, all the transformers, harry potter are all late summer movies. All of them made rediculous amounts of money. 1: I agree that family oriented moviegoers were turned off by tdk's violent nature, but numbers don't lie. Family's weren't exactly drawn to hulk thor or cap movies either.

I think opening early will hurt its chances at the Box Office. This is something James Cameron has mastered, releasing a movie when the competition is at its weakest. Which is why he has released his last two blockbusters in November. The competition going forward is too stiff for it to break any records - it will still do really, really well, the best of any Marvel movie in my opinion- but in order for a movie to break records it needs a solid month and change without any real competition geared at its target demographic. Sadly the Avengers doesn't have that. The Dark Knight Rises however is the last big blockbuster of the summer movie season, and won't have nearly the competition that the Avengers will. Something that worked in The Dark Knights favor. 3D will help, heck it helped Michael Bay make a billion dollar movie, but when it is all said and done I think TDKR will make a hundred million+ more than The Avengers.

Personally, though I hope the avengers make the most money of all movies this year. Whether tdkr makes $1 or a billion, its the end of nolan's bat-movies. This is the first avengers movie and the first of its kind ever attempted. We NEED this to work! And well!

@ Just1Superguy

I agree with a lot of your comment, but consider this.

I know a lot of people at work that don't even know they are making a new batman movie yet, simply because there haven't been previews on TV for it yet.

There is actually a pretty sizable amount of the general audience that have no idea its coming out.

Thats not a good thing.

end of the day box office is just a number and not an indication of quality. All I want is for both of these movies to make enough that they will continue to make more.

Just1superguy is 98% right.

The avengers won't be mindless action. Itll be a smart action movie. But no where near the intellectual ballpark as TDKR. It won't be transformers, nor Casablanca. It'll be a solid CB adaptation. People will be disappointed because the superheroes they want won't get enough screen time. The general audience is expecting equal character importance in this movie but that won't happen.
Also, after the 2nd trailer, expect the marketing camaign to soar for TDKR

I agree with Just1 Superguy with almost all his points except with one. From What I can see, The Avengers seem to be a perfect balance between Action and Plot And Exposition. I do have high hopes for both films but I have little interest in the Dark knight rises as of this moment mostly because two weeks from now I will crying like a fanboy as I watch in Awe for the CBM experience of the Decade.

While I prefer Marvel, and am nearly ill with excitement over the Avengers, I find this Marvel DC rivalry quite annoying. So I hope both films make a bundle and leave their many fans completely happy. That being said I would be dishonest if I didn't admit there a bit of dicky Marvel fanboy in me that would be tickled if Avengers somehow managed to come out on top.
As much as I don't like Nolan's Batmans movies as much as his fans [huge amount of respect for them though!]It would be foolish to bet against Nolan or Batman.

You needed to state one reason that it'll more money than TDKR...The Avengers is far superior, that is all you need.

TDKR will be battling it out with TASM for second place. The last bat flick got a huge pop from the buzz about Ledger's performance and then his untimely passing. If I was the guy playing Bane, I'd watch out for studio hitmen between now and the opening.

Avengers has EVERYBODY hyped. TDKR has a a narrower appeal but will still be huge. But it will do crazy business consider it has no heroes with super powers in it.

I must admit at this moment in time I am looking forward to the Avengers more then TDKR, their has been barely any new out in recent weeks to the point where I have almost forgotten it.

TDK and TDKR (which is not even in theaters yet) are so overrated in certain aspects. I hate when people say they are very intellectual movies.

So could one explain why TDK beat out all Marvel movies to date?
Response to article:
5. TDKR media campaign is waiting until after The Avengers releases to people will put all attention on it.
4. TDKR has a stellar cast.
3. It will be in IMAX
2. Who says it won't continue through fall like TDK did
1. Then who are those kids I saw in the theater while watching TDK?

3d sucks and many people are tired of it especially now that most studios are post producing them into 3d rather than shooting it in 3d.

and the problem with that is that the films are now being forced to showcase scenes in 3d when they originally were not shot to be seen in 3d. it takes the value away and it takes away what the director and cinematographer intended the audience to see.

its clearly a disrespect from the studio and its just a way to gain fast money and save in a pathetic way. and its also a way of them showing no trust in the director.

so i guess marvel studio has no trust in joss, they think the 3d will be a factor rather then the way he shot the film.

the dark theme excuse is no longer any good cause harry potter was a dark theme on a fantasy story and those films made money. and the last two were even darker than ever and they made a fortune with those two.

dont worry avenger fans, the movie will make money but who cares if it does or doesnt your not going to benefit anything from it. all your going to do is watch it and thats the only positive gain your going to get out of it.

both films will make money, the battle lies within which will make a bigger impact on culture and future film making

@just1superguy do you know spiderman is better known than batman & IT'S 3D actual 3D it was shot in 3D. This new spiderman movie lets mature, smart moviegoers in and it also will appeal to kids because kids LOVE spiderman especially with the new cartoon that has come out which will be a kind of marketing tool. All the things you listed are true but spiderman could easily go par-to-par with batman in the box office....remember spiderman 3 was not far behind batman in box office wise.

I think The Avengers and Dark Knight Rises will make about the same amount of money give or take couple Million. One point you didn't bring up is the competition TDKR is facing with GI Joe, Spiderman, Ice Age and Ted two-three weeks prior and then Bourne Legacy two weeks that will spread money out more at the end of the Summer. Historically the highest grossing movies occur in a very dead competition like The Hunger Games is doing right now and Avengers will have 1 1/2 month to cash in and stay in the top 5. Just my take.

Why don't we all just wait for reviews, projections for John Carter were higher but then it was not well reviewed....wait and see since arguing theoreticals will only waste time

This is getting bad. Now people are jus talking out of their butts. Spiderman is more known than batman???? Accordind to what poll or source or anything in the universe? Y'know, both these movies could bomb as far as we know. So, how about we do something constructive and list why any of how these movies will stand up to movies that have actually already proved to be successful? Why theoretical box office numbers against eachother? Everyone so sure that these movies will at least get close to the billion dollar mark. What have seen that makes you think that avengers will make as much as transformers, pirates or harry potter when no ther marvel movie has come close...? How will tdkr stand up comparesd to tdk? Will it still be a crossover smash without the joker or all of the publicity over ledger's death...? Can the spiderman reboot still rake in the money without mcguire, ffranco and dunst, or was the cast imperative to the superhero's movie success...?

Just1superguy- Spiderman is more popular than batman because he is more relatable, besides spiderman is suppose to have teen-angst it's spiderman a teenage boy who falls in love accidentally kills his girlfriend, then finds another girl. Your right prior to the 90s spiderman was not as well known as batman BUT he is much more established now and has made a monumental impact on pop culture today. Batman is still a cool character though

Comix - 4/11/2012, 8:35 PM
Complain all you guys want but you will never truly know exactly who is more popular. You cant base it off of asking just a few people. And if you are a comic fan its almost automatic you should know who spiderman is anyways.

PLus there is a chance spiderman is actually more popualr than bats. Look at the first 3 spidey movies. Besides TDK ofcourse, they grossed more than any other Batman movie there was. Spidey had ALOT of animated shows over the years and even has a new one out now introducing him to a whole new crowd of people. He has had way more games than Batman, even though Arkham city blows all of them off the map, but still.

There is a very good chance spidey could be more popular than bats...just sayin
