TDKR Star Anne Hathaway Recalls Reading For Catwoman While Thinking She Was Up For Harley Quinn

Anne Hathaway has previously mentioned that she believed she was auditioning for a different role when she read for Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, & she's now revealed that it was indeed Harley Quinn.

While being interviewed about playing Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises a few years back, Anne Hathaway mentioned that she actually thought she was reading for a different character when she first met the director about a potential part in the film.

Though she didn't specify at the time, her comments seemed to suggest that it might be Harley Quinn, and the actress has now confirmed as much while telling an amusing anecdote about switching character mid-meeting once she realized her mistake.

“I came in and I had this lovely Vivian Westwood kind of beautiful but mad-tailoring top with stripes going everywhere,” Hathaway told The BBC. “And I wore these flat Joker-ey looking shoes. And I was trying to give Chris these crazy little smiles.” She continued, “About an hour into the meeting he said, ‘Well, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but it’s Catwoman.’ And I was like, ‘Shifting into a different gear. Now ok, we’re slinky. We’re slinky. And I hate my shirt. I love my shirt, but I hate it right now. We’re slinky.’”

Hathaway doesn't reveal what led her to believe she was up for Harley, but she obviously made a good impression despite the mix-up because she went on to play Selina Kyle to great acclaim.

Of course, Margot Robbie eventually wound up taking on the role of HQ in Suicide Squad, but one can't help but wonder what Hathaway's take on the unhinged antihero would look like.

Why would she think Nolan would use Harley without Joker?

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I mean...looking at the movies Harley's been in since, that doesnt really seem out of the realm of possibility

Harley's popularity had only begun to spike at Hot Topic (Aug2011) by the time Dark Knight Rises hit theaters (July2012), so I'm calling shenanigans.

I recently rewatched the Dark Knight trilogy and one thing that struck me that I haven't noticed after all these years is that there's not a single reference to the Joker in Dark Knight Rises.

Considering that he is primarily responsible for where every character is at in Rises and given that Bane throws Gotham into chaos (which the Joker would love and would want to get one up over Bane for) I'm surprised that Joker didn't even get the smallest of mentions in the movie.

@bcom - always wondered myself why he wasn't referenced, turns out it was Nolan trying to be respectful to Ledger - "We're not addressing The Joker at all. That is something I felt very strongly about in terms of my relationship with Heath and the experience I went through with him on The Dark Knight.I didn't want to in any way try and account for a real-life tragedy."

@elgaz - I never bought that “out of respect for Heath” business. It actually seemed pretty DISrespectful to him. How is not even mentioning an integral character to the entire film respectful?

@Stinkor1 - I guess Nolan thought it could be construed as "Heath has died, ergo his absence must absolutely be referenced", whereas it wasn't absolutely necessary to do so. I do get that some kind of reference to the Joker would have been good, given his penchant for chaos and Bane introducing serious chaos to Gotham - they also brought back Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul. But seems like Nolan wanted to avoid a definitive reference to him and just let the audience imagine how and where Ledger's version of the character ended up.

@bcom - I know its not the same, but Im pretty sure that the Joker is mentioned in the novelization of TDKR.

Also, on a kind of related note. I also rewatched the animated version of The Dark Knight Returns. If ever there was to be a live action version made my top choice for Bruce / Batman is Tom Selleck.

Anne was an excellent choice for Catwoman and did great with what she was given but I don't think her or the character were used to their full potential.

A Catwoman without the claws and a whip? C'mon. Also, would have loved to see a classic rooftop chase sequence between her and Batman.

Zimmer's score was A+++ though...

I wasn't a fan of her Catwoman, but I think that's more due to Nolan being such a cold fish.

I do recall being excited when I saw her on the set of this though for my day as an extra. I was in an alley with Bane's stand-in and the on-set nurse, and a car pulled up on the other side of the street and she got out. Then I saw that the garage area she went into had a big table full of donuts and pastries and such and I was quite jealous. On the street inbetween us they were shooting footage of the tumblers driving around the city, so I figured that I couldn't dash across to the craft table without people noticing.

It was a very long day.

@Chewtoy - This idea that Nolan's movies are cold is so over-blown. I don't know how someone could see The Prestige or Interstellar or the ending of Dunkirk and still say that, if you want actual cold, clinical film-making then maybe watch a Terrence Malick movie. To each their own, I suppose.
