Tom Hardy is rumored to have been cast as Dr Hugo Strange in director Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight Rises.

Total Film reports that the upcoming sequel will be based on the graphic novel "Prey" and feature Batman being pursued by Hardy's deranged police psychiatrist.

"Prey" is a segment in the graphic novel Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and was launched in 1989 with the popularity of the Batman movie, following Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One."

Here is the synopsis for the Graphic Novel "Prey":

Gotham City's new psychiatrist, Hugo Strange, is obsessed with Batman. He convinces the mayor to prepare a special task force to capture Batman with Commissioner Gordon as its head. Gordon deploys the seemingly not-too-bright, overzealous Sgt. Max Cort to lead the task force. Later, it is found that Strange hates the Batman because he loves what the Batman does, becoming a creature of the night but he can't do it. He deduces the Batman's identity and plays psychologically with him by placing life-like mannequins of his parents in Wayne Manor with audio tapes. He then hypnotizes Sgt. Cort into donning a costume & becoming another vigilante, who then kidnaps the mayor's daughter. Batman rescues the mayor's daughter, while Hugo Strange is shot several times before falling into Gotham Bay. His body is never recovered.

Other characters featured in "Batman: Prey" that are likely to be featured in TDKR if it closely follows the plot (which it won't) are Catwoman and Sal Maroni.

What do you think of this? This sounds like it's right up Nolan's street and after doing some reading on this graphic novel see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Strange

Could this be the cast list:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman
Tom Hardy as Hugo Strange
Gary Oldman as James Gordon
Rachel Weisz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth
Eric Roberts as Sal Maroni

I've been saying Hugo Strange for a while. Makes good sense. Won't be convinced till there's an official announcement though. Nolan's full of surprises.

i like it i realy like it it workd but i dont think it should be only hugo strange cause after ledger its not right to have strange on his own and yes catwoman thats a good step and it softens the blow a bit but i think nolan should bring back a hint of scarecrow if you get what i mean

Dude IF it was news lol, wheres the LINK? ; p

Seriously, Hardy is wasted on that lame character and they will destroy the Bat franchise ever using CATWOMAN again!

So many BAT characters that haven't been touched that'll own on the big screen!

Fox ain't needed either, the fact Freeman said he wasn't coming back and actually left in TDK kinda sorts that one out.

Nolan would never base the third movie on any comic storyline, his EGO wouldn't allow it! : p

hugo strange isn't a popular villain but i'd be fine with it as long as we get catwoman plus i hope by the time this movie comes out people will get over the whole heath ledger thing and recast the Joker. JGL FOR THE FAWKIN JOKER!!!!

FIRST, this news you posted is something that was released in OCTOBER!!!! by Total Films.com, and they think Hardy would be perfect for " Sergeant Max Cort " not Hugo Strange, get the facts right. They even point out, that this is just their own take, not what they've heard from anyone. Come on, man.

LEEE777 Remember, Lucas " Morgan Freeman " faith was rewarded at the end of the film as the sonars were destroyed. Nolan already stated the everyone from the TDK would be coming back. So, Morgan Freeman is in.

I'm all about Hugo Strange but I highly doubt that Chris Nolan would use someone elses story especially the ending when they can't find his body, that kind of hints a sequel if they did it that way. However, I do think that the idea of Hugo kidnapping the mayor or some political leader would be a good idea just for the sake that the dark knight would actually be "rising" by saving whoever it may be.

i agree with jesse abundis, i did think the same thing as LEEE777 but I just watched it the other night for the 43297502394857320985732985720945th time and right when batman was saying "people diserve to have their faith rewarded to them" thats when they showed the sonar being destroyed.

Great idea!:D Hardy is born to play Hugo Strange! He is short like Strange. He is bald like Strange and he can play twisted characters (Charles Bronson in Bronson, Praetor Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis)... He would be great Max Cort too? But anyway it just needs a two or one villain more.

I say Talia Al Ghul, Deadshot, Bane (Javier Bardem), Firefly, Black Mask, Red Hood (In this version Ra´s Al Ghuls merciless son) or Two-Face.
My favorites choices are Talia, Red Hood and Bane.

The premise is good, however, since when has Nolan based any of the films on any specific comic story lines? If used, he will most likely take the character and his background and meld it into what he wants, just like all the others from the previous films.

Would be nice for a Batman or Superman film (or any CBM for that matter involving well established characters) to be based on an actual comic storyline, but I guess it will never happen. Guess we will have to wait to see how The Wolverine pans out I guess.

Ok, except the joker....and don't start screaming that nobody could do it after HL's performance...after all...the joker didn't look like HL and the joker didn't sound like HL therefore, I think there is an actor out there somewhere that can duplicate the performance. I mean heck...they found Routh to copy Reeve in Superman Returns! lol

Hugo Starnge would be cool...but personally i know nothing about him. It seems like a better idea to end the eries with a better known villain...I still think Nolan will surprise us with Hardy playing THE PENGUIN!

I think it would be cool but I don't think this should be the plot entirely.I would like to see Black Mask, Killer Croc, Talia Al Ghul and Bane as her special forces commando,(No Venom Steriod involved)As for killer croc, he'd make a good opening villan like scarecrow in TDK,just like the version from JOKER the graphic novel.

Black Mask and Rupert Thorne battle for leadership of the Crimanal Underworld, Ruport Thorne hires Deadshot for assasian and Black Mask hires Hush for hitman(Only problem thou Hush may need a backstory origin will they have enuff time 4 that in last film?) but these are realistic and appropriate villains for Nolans Batman world nuff said.
