Warner Bros To Force Christopher Nolan To Film Batman 3 In 3D?

According to a recent report, Warner Bros may insist that the critically acclaimed director will have to film Batman 3 in 3D despite his apparent dislike for the format...

In a report over at Hollywood in Hi Def the site mention that Christopher Nolan's latest movie, Inception, is being considered for a 3D conversion as part of the recent announcement that HBO are launching a 3D TV channel next year. As IGN point out: "The cable net is part of the same larger corporation as Warner Bros, and the 3D Inception would make for a big splashy debut for the new channel."

As previous reports have shown, Chris Nolan is not a big fan of the 3D formate despite having shot parts of both The Dark Knight and Inception in IMAX, and he apparently even stopped Warner Bros. from converting the latter to 3D before it's release back in July. Despite all this, the site points out one very interesting piece of information:

"Prevailing opinions at Warner are that Nolan will not enjoy the luxury of taking a pass on 3D for the new Batman movie, which will surely be set up for 3D from the beginning."

With his past few movies being such huge critical and financial successes, would WB/DC really risk upsetting the guy who has publicly declared his dislike for the format in the past? However, in a year with films like The Avengers and Spider-Man also being released in 3D, will they be forced to do the same with Batman 3?

Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place! Batman 3 is set to be released on July 20, 2012!

Lord...please don't let this happen. 3D is a pain-in-the-ass gimmick that only looks good with animated films (if that). I am so tired of seeing perfectly good films ruined by 3D and 3D conversion. Come on WB, you know better than this.

If Nolan wants it, it will be in 3d. Period.

Warner Bros would be complete idiots to piss Nolan off. However, if their attitude toward a JLA movie is anything to go by, that's exactly what they are! :P As the guy is such a big money earner for them though, I can't see them pushing him to the point where he walks away, especially not after the success of Inception and the fact he's writing the new Superman movie!

@Josh- if WB stays on this path...they will be holding hands with FOX as they merrily skip down the path of mediocrity.

I've said this time and time again. These studio executives never listen to the fans and in this case the director. I feel the same as Nolan. 3D is not conducive to every film. I think the scope and textures of Nolan's films are fine in a standard 2D format. It's fine for animated features and maybe poorly done schlock b-movies but don't just jump on the bandwagon with 3D. As I've said before everyone can't watch films in 3D especially those who are color blind or have optical illnesses that prevent them from watching such movies. I have perfect vision but I noticed the 3D experience gives me headaches as well as irritation of my ears because I don't wear glasses. What about people with epilepsy? I know I'm not in the minority when I bring up these issues in regards to 3D.

There is no need to make a 3rd installment. 3d is only neccesary for crap film that lack in everything else. rule of thumb: if you can't make it good, make it 3D.
this will definately not be the case with Nolan at the helm. everything I have seen in 3d has been complete shat, avatar looked pretty...but the story was bland, predictable, and used before. (think Dances with wolves, Fern gully, They call me Joe, mixed with the smurfs)

f**king WB, Nolan did two great Batman movies that aint in 3D no way they should force him to complete his 3rd Batman movie in 3D.

I can't imagine Nolan doing some shots for the sake of 3D as everything about him has to have a purpose in the story rather than as a gimmick that doesn't deal with the story in any way.... well maybe except for some bat-gadgets in viewing mode like the sonar/x-ray thing on his mask and goggles... but I doubt Nolan will use those extensively throughout the movie. An upwards conversion would make sense as a DVD gimmick, but I'd rather watch it in IMAX and even more in 2D.

They couldn't force him to do Inception in 3D. Nolan has the upper hand so it's his call. Except for Nolan's first 2 movies, WB made/distributed all his movies. I don't think this rumor is true considering his long relationship with WB.

Batman 3 can do fine without it...
He has the carte blanche anyways. WB has a lot less power atm. I very highly doubt the weight this holds.
It won't get my money for 3D.

First, Batman doesnt fits 3D!
Second, Nolan should do what he thinks is right.

Um, Nolan didn't say he was against converting Inception. He said WB suggested it, and they looked at it, but they decided they didn't have enough time to do a good job on the conversion before the release date. I'm not sure 3D is right for Batman (unless they find a way to make the dark scenes work in 3D), but I think Inception in 3D would've been great.

Too bad I won't be able to afford a 3D TV anytime in the near future. I for one think that, when done right, 3D is [frick]ing great. It is no longer the gimmick it always was in the past. And it keeps getting better. Superman Returns was shitty in 3D, but then Beowulf was better, and then Avatar was crazy good in 3D, and then Toy Story 3 was like mind-blowingly great. Sure there are bad ones, but that's only when someone [frick]s up and makes a bad decision. Nolan's a very careful filmmaker. He doesn't [frick] up like that.

WB i hate those guys! all is about making money those ignorants docent see that we need people like Nolan this days and they are forcing him to make the movies in 3D sh!at!
jbak368
jbak368 - 9/27/2010, 7:33 PM
I highly doubt anyone is forcing Nolan to do anything. We're talking about a guy who directed a film that was the second-highest grossing film of all time for a while, then followed it up with an original intelligent sci-fi that still made bank and is getting Oscar buzz, possibly even netting Nolan his first Best Director nod. If Batman shoots in 3D, it will be because he wanted it to, and if it doesn't shoot in 3D and they do a bad conversion job, we'll all know about it from the reviews so we can all go see it in 2D instead.

WB needs to shut it & let the man work his magic. The Dark Knight made them a ton of money without it being 3-D.

I don't think Nolan is as artsy or stubborn as we make him out to be sometimes or that we sometimes think he is. im betting Nolan will have no problem with it (or at least tolerate it with a smile) as long as WB explains to him- hey listen, we need this to compete financially with other studios putting out blockbusters, as the above article suggests. it's not going to change any of his ideas or his style of shooting. and i'm sure they'll release both formats. after which Nolan collects money from the Superman franchise while leaving it in the capable hands of one of the many qualified directors that have been rumored and WB will finance any movie he wants to make on his own. Worth one batman movie in 3D? i think so.

i'll gladly take a 3D batman movie (that i can choose to see in 2D) if it means getting another Inception or The Prestige.

@OdinsBeard - Agreed. Nolan has become a blockbuster filmmaker. A 3D Nolan film is inevitable and welcome.

jbak@ yes it is and yes it is. at the end of the day it's a job. Nolan will still be able to tell he story he wants too and he'll get paid big time.

but f that im not wearing those damn glasses lol. 2D for me please.

Unfortunately for some, 3D isn't just a fad. It's the new wave of television. Just tune in to any tv channel during prime-time tv shows this season, and every commercial break is about all the new 3D tv sets being released.

3D is the new format. Just like black and white tvs were replaced by color, vhs tapes were replaced by dvds, "standard" format was replaced by widescreen... now it's 3D's turn to take the stage.

Like it or not, my guess is all movies and tv shows will soon wind up in 3D.

Keep your glasses handy.

OdinsBeard - 9/27/2010, 7:49 PM
SkylerMystwood@ i think you're right on the money. but i don't think it will truly take it's rightful place until we get rid of the glasses. i mean, we still had laser disc and cassette tapes to get through at one point...

@Superguy (and everyone else) - 3D isn't just about shit popping out of the screen at you. Did anyone see Toy Story 3 in 3D? That shit was incredible. None of that gimmicky, jumpy, shit popping out crap, but there was just this incredible sense of depth to everything, and it really enhanced the movie. The car chases and Batman swooping through the city shots could be incredible in 3D, if they find a way to make it work well in the dark.

jbak368 - 9/27/2010, 7:51 PM
@OdinsBeard - the glasses won't be around for too much longer. You guys hear about the Nintendo 3DS? Glasses-less 3D that (supposedly) works really well.
