THE MARVELS Director Nia DaCosta In Talks To Helm Second Movie In 28 YEARS LATER Trilogy

It seems Sony Pictures is wasting little time in enlisting a director for the second film in its planned 28 Years Later trilogy, as The Marvels' Nia DaCosta is reportedly in talks to helm...

We recently learned that 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are set to join forces yet again for a long-awaited sequel to the classic "zombie" horror movie, and we now have confirmation that it's actually going to be a trilogy of follow-up films.

Boyle is still set to helm the first part, but Deadline is now reporting that Sony Pictures has enlisted Nia DaCosta to direct the middle instalment.

In addition to the recent Candyman reimagining, DaCosta helmed Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.

Garland will pen the script for all three movies, and the plan is to shoot the first two back-to-back, which is why the studio is moving so quickly to secure a director.

Recent casting rumors claimed that Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy) and Charlie Hunnam (Rebel Moon, The Gentlemen) are in talks to play the lead roles, but there's no mention of any potential cast members in the trade's report. If they do wind up signing on, they will likely star alongside recent Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy, who has strongly hinted that he does intend to reprise his role as the original movie's protagonist, Jim.

28 Days Later was a massive success, and already spawned one less well-regarded (but still well worth watching) follow-up in 2007's 28 Weeks Later. Boyle and Garland were only involved as executive producers on that project, so a lot of fans are sure to view this new movie as the first true sequel.

The budget for each movie in the new trilogy is said to be in the $75 million range.

The first film starred Murphy as a man who wakes from a coma after a bicycle accident to find that England has been overrun by "The Infected." The virus turns its victims into raging killers, but unlike the usual "zombies," these creatures can move with frightening speed. Jim then sets out to learn what's been going on, meeting fellow survivors played by Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson along the way, as well as a deranged army major played by Christopher Eccleston.

Plot details for 28 Years Later are still under wraps, but the timeframe would suggest that it will take place in a near-future setting, which means the movie might include some sci-fi elements in addition to horror.

What do you make of this news? Are you excited for more 28 Days movies, or do you think too much time has passed? Check out the trailer for the original below, and be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

@ReverseFlasher - hopefully you're right.

I just like the first two so much I'd hate for Sony to force an unnecessary trilogy.

My memory of The Marvels is that the writing was bad, but that the direction was fine, if maybe a bit by the numbers. Seems like a decent choice

@marvel72 - she wasn’t the issue… in fact she did what she could with what she had. The issue was the writing, and dare I say… Feige’s direction.

The Marvels was what it was. It wasn't nearly as bad as Quantumania but seems to get more flak. I'm more worried that Dacosta also helmed the new Candyman, which didn't work for me at all.

@MarkCassidy - I loved the new Candyman but never saw the original to compare.

One thing is for certain, if they do go with her they will get lots of free advertising from people super upset about her being director

Wait, trilogy? Think that when they're making a trilogy, they should've started with 28 Months Later and end with 28 Centuries Later (because why not)
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/11/2024, 11:48 AM
@bkmeijer1 - And the prequel 28 hours later.

And the revival 28 Millenia Later. Really push the boat out on the Sci-Fi.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/11/2024, 12:25 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Depends on what your doing with something like this...

...hours is too soon to see much impact beyond a few individuals if that showing symptoms.

...Days later after an infected Chimp with a rage virus is released your talking relatively localised to where the outbreak starts and attempts at lock down of the city/region/island depending on the specifics (a virus that spreads THAT fast will tend to burn out before ever going internation IRL btw).

Weeks later your talking about more of a nationwide thing if it starts out just a city or region, more international if talking the first all in one country/Island and the pandemic still actively increasing in cases/spread prior to any cure/vaccine having been discovered....

28 months later your tending to be looking at the point of vaccines/cures or heading into full global apocalypse if all such attempts are failing

28 Years later your talking aftermath of all of that, still seing direct impacts in various ways from it directly or indirectly IF they found vaccines or effective treatments, still could be seeing some cases and mutations of the virus OR it is a full post apocalypse film.

However by a century or more later your probably at a point where everyone has almost forgot about it all and nobody realy understanding the impact it had at the time (think perceptions of 'Spanish flu' or 'black death' pre-COVID) and society should have recovered unless it ended up also causing war like issues (nukes used to try and counter spread for instance).

So having the first couple movies of a new trilogy still in that 28yr after window at least seems more sensible than jumping to 28 decades or centuries later for the second film at least but we'll see.

So 28days was ALL UK, 28weeks later was NATO military forces to salvage a safe zone in London thus more international but still UK centric and were initialy intending on a third with 28months later (initial intent stated in 2007) but then COVID hit before it finaly was getting off the ground (was announced in 2019). Curious what way they go being years later and hoping they don't frack it up.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/11/2024, 2:34 PM
@Apophis71 - yeah, especially the 28 months later would've been interesting considering how close it could follow our own pandemic a few years ago.

Guess with 28 centuries later you might be looking at some post-apocalyptic society that maybe got the virus under control before it again just spreads like wildfire again. Overgrown London could be a cool setting.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/11/2024, 3:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Could even make 28 centuries later the start of a new pandemic, Britain overgrown and believed no humans survived there and do a research team going in to do archeaological stuff or whatever as a film (sort of a lost world thing like Jurassic parks second film, cept without the Dino's) leading to contact with the virus starting it all over again on mainland Europe or America.

Be a way of doing a sort of reboot whilst still a sequel, so all depends what they are going for.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/11/2024, 3:18 PM
@Apophis71 - yeah. Think the overgrown world we get in stuff like Planet of the Apes and Horizon Zero Dawn would be a unique setting for a zombie movie. And the last few people just get [frick]ed over again by the virus

I'm assuming Boyle trusts her. We will see. Marvels was ass but I still think she's a competent director for the most part. Candyman was messy but had some decent aspects.

Announcing your horror series as the beginning of a trilogy just kills the tension like it did with David Gordon Green's Halloween series. Part of the thrill going into these type of films is not knowing if the characters are going to make it out alive and if the killer/ monsters will win.

Candyman was a blast. I finally watched The Marvel's on a flight and it was fine. I found it to be fairly paint by numbers Marvel definitely not the best thing they have made but also not the worst in my eyes. The issues I had were more from poor writing, weak antagonist and some flat acting and didn't involve direction. I did find the fights to be entertaining but felt the singing planet to be intentionally cringe which is certainly a choice
