THE MARVELS Ended Up Losing More Money Than THE FLASH After Disappointing 2023 For Superhero Movies

A new report looks back at the profitability of 2023's biggest movies, revealing that The Marvels ended up losing more The Flash following its theatrical and home entertainment runs. Check it out...

2023 wasn't a good year for superhero movies, with the vast majority of them drawing negative reviews and poor box office returns. One of the most shocking flops, however, was The Marvels

Captain Marvel made over $1 billion in 2019 and the follow-up saw Carol Danvers paired up with WandaVision's Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel's title character. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that The Marvels' $206.1 million global box office haul was worse than we realised.

According to the trade, when all is said and done, the movie made a net loss of $237 million. It's no wonder then that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Marvel Studios will begin moving away from developing unnecessary sequels.

As for what the future holds in store for these characters, it's hard to say.

Monica will clearly be part of a future Multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Men, while a Ms. Marvel Variant is rumoured to be Marvel Zombies' lead character. As for Captain Marvel, her story will surely continue in the next Avengers movies.

Of course, if 2023 was bad for Marvel Studios, then the DCEU fared even worse. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and The Flash majorly underperformed, and while some did better than others, it was still a disappointing end for the franchise.

While the latter was billed as "the greatest superhero movie ever made," it ultimately made a net loss of $155 million. For comparison's sake, it made $271.3 million worldwide.

However, before getting too wrapped up in all that superhero fatigue talk, bear in mind the genre is still capable of making plenty of money. In fact, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is named as one of 2023's most successful movies, making a profit of $124 million.

"I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn't seen it," Teyonah Parris recently said of The Marvels' struggles. "So that's frustrating, when people comment on things they haven't actually experienced." She added, "there's a lot of people who put a lot of their time, spirit and talent into bringing this forward."

"I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it. If you don't like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness."

"You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion," Parris continues. "And if you did, then that's fair. That's how you feel, and I cannot take that from you."

We know why The Flash flopped, but why did the Marvels fail at the BO, fellas? Especially after the amazing numbers of the 1st one?

I just wanna remind all you MCU haters that it's been 80 days since Madam Webb officially came out and that it is still the best Marvel film this year, currently and it is also still the highest grossing marvel movie this year, currently.

@HashTagSwagg - Dakota was the worst thing about Madame Web. Not a good actor. The villain felt pulled from a soap opera the way he delivered lines. Everybody kept talking about Sydney Sweeney but she was NOT the highlight. So much else went on and the story wasn't bad.

@HashTagSwagg - in terms of entertainment, madame web made me laugh while the supposed comedy didn't.

In terms of overall losses for the studio, madame web cost so little Sony legit could've released it on one day in one theater in a country that has no form of currency and it still would've lost Sony less than the marvels lost disney 🤣

In terms of basic gross, yeah the marvels has that over madame web. Sure, it's ignoring the context of how ridiculously more expensive the budget and marketing was, but hey. The marvels got one lead

They were both bad movies. I’d probably place The Flash slightly above The Marvels. But they were both better than Quantumania. That movie was atrocious.

To the quote: Criticizing the writing isn't representing a lot of people. However, something like CGI, criticism of overworked animators by Disney and such makes sense to me, LORD willing.
Skestra
Skestra - 5/3/2024, 7:38 AM
I think if the cast had been able to promote the film, but couldn't due to the writer's strike, it would have helped "The Marvels" box office. Not astronomically, but more promotion would have at least given them a better turn out in the theaters.

For me, it comes down which movie I liked better, and that was "The Marvels" by far.
Origame
Origame - 5/3/2024, 8:19 AM
@Skestra - I think that goes without saying, but at the same time I really don't see this avoiding being a flop. Samuel l Jackson is the biggest name in that movie, and his presence in the marketing and interviews didn't help secret invasion after all.

Then you have brie larson who's really proven not to be a box office draw, while at the same time has a group of fans who actively dislike her.

Then the rest of the cast are all unknowns.

Best case scenario with interviews I'd say it'd make quantumania money. But again, that's best case scenario. Realistically I see it just making enough back to cover the budget.

Of course people talk mess without watching. Such is life. One positive for me is nobody talking about Marvels so I wasn't spoiler about Hank McCoy and Binary!

This site should be named Comic Book Movie Spoiler.
Ruined No Way Home for me.

I got spoiled on Infinity War and so stayed offline for Endgame.

The worst part is even if I don't click the article, the spoiler is in the headline or image.

Cap it off with racists, misognyists who don't read comics and give uninformed opinions and there's really no reason to come here.

I hope Sue Storm gets a solo movie so you predictables lose your minds.

The Marvel's was fine. Watched it on a flight a month ago and it was just plain mid. Had no interest in the Flash or Shazam though

Finally watched the Flash. It was okay; better than I expected.
I definitely prefer the Marvels and feel it had more rewatch value.

@Slotherin - Flash was a lot better than I thought, I watched it a couple of times, havent watched Marvels for the fact this D list villain gets more screentime and puts up an actual fight than Ronan got to both movies he was in. The disrespect.
