CONSTANTINE 2 Starring Keanu Reeves Has Reportedly Been Scrapped At Warner Bros./DC Studios

It's a new era for the DCEU DCU thanks to DC Studios, but it appears the planned Constantine sequel starring Keanu Reeves is another project scrapped by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Read on for details...

Last year, we learned that John Wick star Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 movie. Francis Lawrence agreed to step back into the director's chair, while Akiva Goldsman was tapped to work on the screenplay with him.

Constantine may have Americanized DC Comics' Hellblazer, but the movie's following has only increased since it was first released. As for Reeves, he's more popular now than ever before.

Unfortunately, it appears that's not a good enough reason to move forward with the movie for DC Studios. Scooper KC Walsh claims that Constantine 2 has now been cancelled, bluntly telling one of his followers, "Constantine 2 is not happening.”

He'd go on to add, "That was a movie they greenlit in desperation because they weren’t sure the direction of DC her and needed to have something post-2023."

It's worth noting that, as Walsh points out, Constantine 2 was announced prior to the formation of DC Studios. Now, it appears the sequel will join the likes of Superman & Lois, Titans, and Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler as one of the projects scrapped by James Gunn and Peter Safran as they look to embark on a new era of storytelling for the DCU.

Why couldn't the Constantine follow-up be part of the Elseworlds stories we know Warner Bros. will continue to tell outside the DCU? It's hard to say, though we wouldn't be shocked if Gunn and Safran have their own very specific ideas for the Hellblazer that don't include moving forward with a sequel to a movie that came out to mixed reviews nearly two decades ago.

There's a chance Reeves could be the DCU's Constantine, of course, but as beloved as the actor is, most fans would likely prefer a comic-accurate take on the demon-hunting anti-hero.

Are you disappointed that Constantine 2 no longer appears to be happening?

Probably for the best

@TheWalkingCuban - I was excited to see this get made, but I have to agree with you. Plus this probably means we'll get a proper Constantine within the DCU at some point as well. One would hope at least.

@TheWalkingCuban - Yeah, for me the interest in this was nostalgia driven. It's from a time when comic accuracy still wasn't necessarily a thing. I don't know why they'd revisit it now. I kinda figured that would be gone with the new regime.

@MosquitoFarmer - Which, of course, doesn’t prevent the article from being worded to stoke as much nerd rage as possible toward Gunn and Safran.

And it's not protected by Zaslav, like Phillips Joker and Reeves Batman.

Otherwise, I honestly believe none of them would be happening and despite the successes both critically and commercially of the first Joker and The Batman, I don't think it would have been a bad move to cancel them. And if I'm being too vague there, I mean I think it would have been a good idea to cancel them, despite the obvious logical conclusion that they both need sequels. They don't. Money can be garnered elsewhere. And by that I mean James Gunn's DCU (in case I was being vague again).

@ObserverIO - I think the fact they weren’t trying to be in that “maybe they are in the same universe” type of movies helped them too, that and joker was already filming lol but still it’s clear cut Pattinson Batman is a solo guy like the bale movies

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah Reeves has made it quite clear that he doesn't want to be connected. Despite flirting with the idea of introducing a Superman to his universe.

And they got Joker into production pretty fast. But I think all of the other Mike De Luca/ Walter Hamada projects are dead in the water.

Except maybe that Batman Beyond project. I'm hearing some rumblings on that front. But I hope if they do it's set in the future of the DCU and not an Elseworlds set in the present day, like it was going to be.

It may still have Michael Keaton and of course both Christina Hodson and Andy Muschietti are doing something for Gunn so that might be it.

@ObserverIO - Zaslav just cares about the commercial success I am sure which is why Joker's sequel and Matt Reeves' The Batman projects (sequels + the villains TV spinoffs) are allowed to continue as Elseworlds. But there's also the fact that it'd be moronic as hell to scrapp them and further sever more talent relationship as he's done it with all the tax write-offs he did last year with mass cancellations.

The single fact he went back on his word in allowing more than 1 Batman live-action project to be greenlit in Gunn's DCU slate, all while kicking out the animated Caped Crusader show because he doesn't want creators to receive the residuals gains, says it all: it's about money and exploiting the cash cow that is Batman.

@NinnesMBC - I really hope that Caped Crusader show is allowed to find a home somewhere.

It is money-grubbing greed, plain and simple.
Although, the beauty of hiring Gunn and Safran to oversee DC Studios is that he wouldn't have to cancel The Batman or Joker sequel. It wouldn't be his responsibility anymore. And Gunn and Safran would also have had no responsibility or obligation to Reeves or Phillips. The bad guy would have been Mike De Luca for promising things he couldn't guarantee. Zaslav's hands would have been clean.
He missed a trick there, lol.

F*cking cowards.

Gunn name-drops the Multiverse just to act cool and because he wants to preserve his sphere of the DCEU, "allows" the Battinsonverse and Jokerverse to continue but just because the big boss wouldn't allow him to scratch those projects, his Elseworld/Multiverse is empty af.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/7/2023, 9:11 AM
@Doomsday8888 - Battinson and the Phillipsverse (terrible name I know) are probably just going to be two parts of a much bigger Elseworlds universe. We could get the Red Son universe, the Gaslight universe, even an extension of the Burtonverse with a possible Batman Beyond film. There's so much you can do with the whole Multiverse thing but there main priority at the moment is to focus on the MAIN DCU before they extend out to other Elseworld stories.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 2/7/2023, 7:07 PM
@Doomsday8888 - Yeah, the overall vibe of cherry-picking just continues to grow if this is true. The moment he said Elseworlds is when it all becomes fair and square for literally anything out there that was still going (and will come out) as DC live-action to continue but to just let those two (and Teen Titans Go and Harley Quinn?) is hypocritical.

And I also have been slowly believing that the reason Gunn might have accepted the job was because he wanted to preserve as you said his DCEU projects/corner that he did with Peacemaker. S2 has just been put on pause, not scrapped and the "Peacemaker team" will appear in the Waller series.

So yeah...not everything is really being done out of pure objectivity.
