CONSTANTINE 2 Writer Akiva Goldsman Reveals First Details About Keanu Reeves' Upcoming Sequel

Last year, we learned that John Wick star Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 movie. Francis Lawrence agreed to step back into the director's chair, while Akiva Goldsman was tapped to work on the screenplay with him.

Constantine may have Americanized DC Comics' Hellblazer, but the movie's following has only increased since it was first released. As for Reeves, he's more popular now than ever before and this is clearly a passion project for the actor.

Recent reports that DC Studios has shelved the project were quickly debunked, and Goldsman has shared some new details about the sequel during an interview with Deadline. Revealing that J.J. Abrams (who was once set to oversee a whole slate of Justice League Dark projects for Warner Bros.) is also involved, the writer confirmed he's "been pretty deep in the story-breaking stage.”

"This is a credit to Keanu, who endlessly has said, ‘This is the character I want to return to," he tells the trade, adding that Constantine 2 will expand on the original's themes about maintaining the barrier between Earth and the evil creatures on the other side.

"The character is very much Keanu and the way he and Francis saw the world of good and evil, and the wonderful and authentic noir where there is a world behind the world of good and evil coexist with our world right up close," Goldsman adds. "Beyond that, we are still discovering it as I am writing the script."

It sounds like the movie is a long way from becoming a reality, but these comments definitely bode well for the project. It's possible Reeves will be the DCU's Constantine, especially as Warner Bros. Discovery has scrapped Abrams' HBO Max series starring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù. If so, we can expect to see him in Swamp-Thing and other upcoming DC Studios projects.

2005's Constantine wasn't a critical hit, but it did earn a solid $280 million at the worldwide box office. There was sequel potential, but one never became a reality until now (we hope).

Constantine 2 doesn't currently have a release date.

I love Keanu Reeves, but he doesn't seem to be as versatile an actor as he was in his earlier career. Still glad he's getting to do this.

@MosquitoFarmer - looks like only thing keeps him going is John wick he hasn’t been in any thing else beside matrix

@dragon316 - Quick Google search shows he's been doing plenty in between the Wick films. Quite a lot actually...

@MosquitoFarmer

He's never been very versatile, tbf.

@MosquitoFarmer - listen I respect your opinion but he has come a long way from the guy everyone imitiated with the voice of a surfer dude. Not saying everything he has been in is a master piece but he has come a long way.Much respect.

@pitbull76 - Absolutely. But we don't see him stretch his chops in the same way he used to, or at least in a different way. Bill and Ted Face The Music was fun because we got to see him be zany in way we haven't seen from him in some time. And I'd actually love for him to do another movie with Sandra Bullock, cause I grew up watching the awesome Speed, and I actually rather love The Lake House.

@MosquitoFarmer - Yes sir I think with speed we got to see another side of him at the time we had not seen.

@MosquitoFarmer - Look, I love Keanu but the man has never had much range. He's smart and stopped taking scripts that stretch him too far, but he was (hilariously) awful when he was trying to branch out to more serious acting like in Dracula and Much Ado About Nothing.

@Reginator - That was earlier in his career, and he co-wrote it. But it's a great tense suspense-thriller starring Paul Walker and Steve Zahn. I certainly get what you're saying about him, but he has had some good stuff amongst his work.. Admittedly, it's usually from years before.

Not surprised they are in early stages of writing. And I think they can take their time, as we already have an Elseworld story in next year and the year after.

Keanu’s recent revival of an older franchise didn’t go so well and I think part of it was due to the fact that even his stilted acting has become even more stiff as the years have gone on

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Titans (2018)
Star Trek: Short Treks (2018)
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
The Dark Tower (2017)
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Rings (2017)
The 5th Wave (2016)
The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015)

These are the last 10 things he has written. I actually like Last Night and Divergent series but they have never been accused of being written well at all and are the worst of those franchises. Love 1st 2 Wick films, 3rd was OK but I never felt a need to rewatch it like I did multiple times with the others. Unless this gets good word-of-mouth I'm staying very far away from it solely because of him writing. He and JJ screwed over Trek and I won't forgive him for that BS!

This whole Deadline article talks about this being Warner Bros. Pictures, under the auspices of Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. This has nothing to do with DC Studios.

Therefor either

a) This is bunkum.

or

b) DC Studios is bunkum.

If it's the latter, then Zaslav really need to get his house in order and right the ship (it's a houseboat, I'm not mixing metaphors).
This should fall under DC Studios, since it is a DC project and not just anyone who shakes their ass at Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. This goes for Joker 2 too. And Joker Too 2!

One thing seems certain. This is not DCU Constantine. He will not show up in Swamp Thing or any DC movie, because it is not being produced by DC Studios.

As always, we should wait for Gunn (or Safran) to confirm or deny this. Francis Lawrence, Akiva Goldsman and Keanu Reeves are not the authority on this.

Have we learned nothing from The Rock and Henry Cavill. Do not listen to De Luca or anyone from WB about DC films. Listen to DC.

I like Keanu, but, truth be told, he was a pale and sanitized version of the John Constantine from Vertigo comic books. This demand for a Constantine sequel is kinda funny. Nostalgia is a curious thing.

I'm still baffled how after all these years they've wanted to do it they just haven't written something out in preparation for it anyway, let alone already thought through the story they want to tell.
That's what I would have done.
