We recently got the disappointing news that Marvel Studios would not be hosting its highly-anticipated Hall H panel - where the big casting announcements and trailers usually feature - during this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and Variety is now reporting that several other major studios have decided to skip the event.

The ongoing WGA strike is one factor, but if SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP can't come to terms by the June 30 contract deadline, actors are expected to join writers and showrunners in going on strike and sitting out promotional events like Comic-Con, and this uncertainly has led to a lot of drop-outs.

In addition to Marvel, Disney and Lucasfilm are not planning any panels, and neither are HBO, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Netflix. Paramount Pictures is expected to hold a panel for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, and Amazon should be on hand to promote The Boys season 4.

The big question mark is Warner Bros./DC Studios.

With The Flash already running on fumes at the box office, SDCC would be a perfect opportunity for James Gunn and Peter Safran to showcase what they have in store for the new DCU, while also doing everything in their power to sell audiences on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle.

“With regard to the strike and its possible effects on Comic-Con, we tend to refrain from speculation or forecasting," said Comic-Con spokesperson David Glanzer in a statement. "I will say, our hope is for a speedy resolution that will prove beneficial to all parties and allow everyone to continue the work they love. Until then, we continue to diligently work on our summer event in the hopes of making it as fun, educational, and celebratory as in years past.”

San Diego Comic-Con will take place the weekend of July 21.

@AmazingFILMporg - covic changed everything. Same with the game industry, now these companies can make their own "direct" and not have to pay for Hall's or deal with the stupid ass smelly crowds. Now Comic Con goes back to what it was about in the first place, comics. I'm just glad I can give up on finding passes. 7 years wasted, now I try for their individual conventions

If comic con goes back to comics, what does E3 go back to?

You said it yourself, comic con's origin. What about E3?

Why go to a convention when they can announce their films at their own events💁?

This is the streaming wars all over again. Only difference is that when studios found out they can make their own content, Netflix started making their own stuff.

What is comic-con gonna make? Films? Their own comics? Maybe but they better start soon because they will go out of business 🤡

Oh well,Marvel and Lucasfilm have pretty much crap coming up.

DC have Blue Beetle and Aquaman coming up which I don't know if people are hyped for, I guess they could announce castings for the rebooted universe.

It's an opportunity for Gunn to have the spotlight all to himself. If he so chooses.

I was thinking the other day that it kind of feels like we haven't heard from Feige in a while. Maybe it's just me and I missed it or something.

@TheManWithoutFear - Because Feige is lost. He has never understood the creative side.
Now he is rudderless, and just hiding out making his silly little plans for Eternals 2 or "The Mutants" and whatever Black Knight D+ spin off someone pitches him.
His only big hope is FF and that already is falling apart from the rumors we've heard about casting.

LOL
Marvel is 'this close' to being a dead horse. I cannot wait.

People could just go for the comic books right? I mean every comic con besides this one and New York are just nerd culture and not about movie announcements. There’s no reason San Diego can’t shift that way.

@mountainman - Thats what Comic Con used to be all about in the early days anyway. The thing is, comics are not what they once were, unfortunately.

@CorndogBurglar - Agree with that statement. But other comic cons all over can happen without big movie announcements. I don’t go to them, but have friends that do. It seems like the cosplay, celebrity guests and panels are a big draw.

@mountainman - Oh, I live in Florida and we have 2 very big comic cons each year. MegaCon and Tampa Comic Con. I take my family to them every year and we have a blast. And LOTS of people go to them.

My point was that even those aren't really about comics anymore. Comic booths might take up less than one fourth of the total booths there.

It's mostly merchandise. Toy booths. Clothing. Anime. All kinds of stuff. But what makes them the most fun is that about 25%-50% of the booths are all original artists and people making their own stuff and selling them. We usually end up walking away with original art that you won't find anywhere else.

So San Diego and NY Comic Cons will definitely need to downsize if they movie studios and these big companies pull out for good. Because that's really the only difference between those two Cons and all the others.

@CorndogBurglar - Yes that was my point. I realize none of the cons have comics at their forefront. Many have even changed their names accordingly.

In CO, next weekend we have the Fan Expo in Denver. I’m sure it’s the same as what you described.

Funny you mention the Tampa Comic Con. A fantasy author that I like, Brandon Sanderson, just said last week that is his one con this year that he’s going to.

@mountainman - Yeah, Tampa Comic Con is a good time and pretty big.

Unless you meant selling the comics in print format ONLY, sounds like almost everything there is actually all about comics and that includes the celebrity panels who are mostly those starred in a comic related movie/show.

@TheOtherOn - If I wasn't clear enough, yes I was talking about printed comics. Which is why I mentioned how few booths there are for that vs all the other types of booths.
