We heard last August that streaming platform Netflix had picked up comic book creator Mark Millar's Millarworld, though very little news has come out about that since. Not content with one comic book legend in their arsenal, it has now been announced that Netflix has made a seven figure deal to develop films based on Image creator Rob LIefeld's  Extreme Universe characters.

According to the report, filmmaker and producer Akiva Goldsman has been placed in charge of assembling a writers' room to undertake this endeavor, not too dissimilar to what the A Beautiful Mind scribe has done for Paramount and their Transformers franchise. The plan is for Goldsman, Liefeld and Extant executive producer, Brooklyn Weaver, to all serve as producers on the films.

Netflix feature film chief Scott Stuber commented on the recent acquisition as well as Akiva Goldsman's involvement:

Rob Liefeld's Extreme Universe features grity stories and distinctive characters. Akiva's creative voiced has been behind some of the largest movie franchises, making him uniquely capable of helping bring these superheroes from the Extreme Universe to life for Netflix.

While the Deadpool creator himself also expressed his excitement about the union with Netflix, as well as having some very kind and positive words to say about his now collaborator, Akiva Goldsman.

Netflix has become a part of every day existence for me and my children. Their programming is the most dynamic and diverse I have seen. I am beyond thrilled and inspired to be bringing my Extreme catalogue to life with the creative wizards at Netflix. What Akiva Goldsman has achieved with his craft and storytelling across all mediums in our industry is of absolute benefit for my Extreme characters. He is an absolute comic book fanatic and working with him on adapting Extreme Universe has been electric. His stellar work on Star Trek: Discovery has wowed the fandom and trust me when I say that the Teen Titans show he is producing is going to blow fans away. I cannot wait to show the world what we have in store.

Certainly strong words from Liefeld, and while the flagship title Youngblood isn't included in the deal; Brigade, Bloodstrike, Cybrid, Re-Gex, Bloodwulf and Kaboom are. If nothing else, Liefeld seems very excited and his exuberance might be infectious enough to make even the most cynical feel somewhat hopeful and optimistic about this new development.

What do you think? Are you a fan of Liefeld's EXTREME UNIVERSE? What are you looking forward to most out of this deal? Which comic universe should NETFLIX acquire next? Leave your thoughts below.

I cannot believe studios are adapting stuff from the 90's just because Deadpool was a sucess, Deadpool and Lobo are great, because they make fun of 90's comics, most 90's comic characters were crap

@dracula - Liefeld was a huge influence on 90's comics. Personally I can't stand the guy, but he did give us characters like Deadpool, Cable, X-Force, and Youngblood.

I'm not sure I agree that most 90's characters are bad though. There are definitely some that suck. But there are plenty of good ones also.

And lets nkt forget that Deadpool was much different in the 90's than what he eventually turned into. Originally he was more in line with Spider-Man. A wise cracking character that talked too much. He didn't become a walking parody until the 2000's.

@TheUnworthyThor - Other than Deadpool, Lobo and Spawn, can you think of any actual good 90's character people remember

@CorndogBurglar - Liefelds a hack, it wasnt even him who turned Deadpool into a parody, it was other writers. All Liefeld created was a Deathstroke knock off

@dracula - A Deathstroke knock off that was still considered a successful character that people liked.

And what about the others I mentioned? Cable. Youngblood. He's responsible for X-Force becoming as popular as it did.

All I'm saying is that it isn't fair to make blanket statements because he actuallyndid give us some amazing characters.

I hate his art with a passion. Even as a kid I couldn't stand it.

But credit where its due. He has done some good.

And again, there are plenty of great 90's characters, whether they were created by Liefeld or not.

Gambit, Cable, Stryfe, Danny Ketch Ghost Rider, Fabian Cortez, Cyborg Superman, Youngblood, Lady Death, Madman, Bishop

These are all just off the top of my head. I bet if we google this you would be surprised how many cool characters came out of the 90's.

@TheUnworthyThor - Man, with WB introducing multiple banners for their DC films and focusing less on connectivity, I would LOVE to see a Midnighter film.

He was in that large banner that they unveiled at Comic Con as well.

@dracula - The Wildstorm Universe was awesome in the 90s.

@CorndogBurglar - Most of his "original" characters are just knock offs of characters from Marvel or DC comics that he wanted to draw, Young Blood is just a team of marvel knock offs. Fine maybe his knock offs have a fan base, but can you think of any characters of his that arent just knock offs

I’m not familiar at all with this comic, but Goldmans involved I wouldn’t expect much. He’s proven time and time again that he completely misses the point in almost every adaptation he’s involved with. The guy produces garbage.

But who do you thinknis responsible for Deadpool, Cable, X-Force, and Youngblood?
