FANTASTIC BEASTS Franchise Appears To Be At An End Following Disappointing Third Instalment

After one good movie and two disappointing ones, it's looking like the Fantastic Beasts franchise has reached its end, with the Wizarding World seemingly put on the shelf at Warner Bros. Discovery...

The Harry Potter movies once served as Warner Bros.' biggest franchise, with many blaming its success on the DCU not being a priority for the studios at the time. Still, it's been a very long time since the final movie was released back in 2011. Since then, we've had a prequel/spin-off courtesy of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, though that's proven to be something of a let-down.

While Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was undeniably fun, the sequels were a major decline in quality, with not even the level of damage control in the latest instalment doing much to put the troubled series back on the right track. We're supposed to be getting at least two more movies to conclude this story but, as expected, that no longer seems to be the plan.

Both The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore were box office disappointments, and the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery forging ahead with those sequels...well, it wouldn't be the smartest of business decisions for the frugal CEO David Zaslav.

In a report from Variety (via SFFGazette.com), it's established that despite Zaslav's recent comments about potentially returning to the Harry Potter franchise, "There are no active discussions currently with Rowling about developing another 'Harry Potter' movie."

In fact, "There is also currently nothing in 'the Wizarding World' in active development at Warner Bros., inclusive of both the 'Harry Potter' franchise and 'Fantastic Beasts' IP." That just about closes the door on Fantastic Beasts 4, meaning we're unlikely to ever see how the battle between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald ended.

We're sure the Harry Potter franchise is a well Warner Bros. will return to sooner rather than later, though what form that will take is impossible to say. There continue to be rumblings about a big screen adaptation of The Cursed Child, though the original cast doesn't appear to be in any rush to reprise their iconic roles.

I enjoyed the first film but the sequels were really rough. With how they underperformed, I’m not surprised that they are ending it at a trilogy. That film was even a decent stopping point.

However, I doubt this is the last we see the Harry Potter franchise on screen.

@MrDandy - The first was the best.

The problem is that they tried combining the Newt storyline with the Dumbledore/Grindlewald story.

Hogwarts Founders series to HBO MAX, GoT budget style or GTFO

@NicolausCopernicus - I’ve always wanted a Criminals Minds inspired procedural crime drama with Aurors hunting down Dark Wizards

@NicolausCopernicus - This guy had a pretty decent idea for the cast and the story/structure.

The Secrets of Dumbledore made 405 million worldwide. It doesn’t look like Black Adam is going to hit that. They have the same budget. Are we officially calling Black Adam disappointing?

Not surprising but I wanted one more to wrap things up Episode 3 style. Oh well I enjoyed them for what they were

@Ha1frican - I enjoyed them as well too. One more for closure is needed. The actors were phenomenal. I wish Colin Ferrel could have been the villain through the whole series.

And nothing of value was lost.

I could see them rework an installment into a series centered around Dumbledore this time. The Fantastic Beasts trilogy seems to have capped off Newt's story and I think that it might be good to pivot to just a short series with Dumbledore as the main character. This will also give HBO Max something else in development for Harry Potter. I know Zaslav doesn't seem to much care for spending a lot on HBO Max series that are untested, but I think a Dumbledore-centric series would probably work out pretty well. And centering it around Dumbledore and Grindlewald would be fantastic, no pun intended. They were the absolute best parts of the last film and exploring their relationship in a fuller, deeper story would be fantastic.
