Australian Green Lantern Review - Spoiler Free

Hal Jordan has finally found his way to Australia! Has it been worth the wait though?

Superhero films have become quite mainstream over the past few years, and have been taken in a far more serious direction, which audiences seem to be really enjoying. ‘Green Lantern’ tries so very hard to be a serious film, but when you’re working on the premise of wearing a magical ring that allows you to create things you think of out of energy, the ‘reality’ is very hard to come by.

That being said, the cast do try and bring their best to such a weak plot. Ryan Reynolds is great as the cocky test pilot Hal Jordan, and Peter Sarsgaard is enjoyable as the slowly going insane Hector Hammond. The standout however, is Mark Strong as Sinestro, Hal Jordan’s mentor. Even though he looks like a sunburnt elf, he has a great on screen presence, and is one character that I look forward to seeing being developed in the films inevitable sequels.

There really could have been a lot more character development. Characters like Kilowog are just brushed over, with very little backstory or anything. Obviously not every character can have a 10 minute origin story, but it would have been nice to learn a bit more about the important characters from the ‘Green Lantern’ universe.

The inclusion of Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller was a great idea in theory, but it’s not really explained WHY she’s there. This was DC’s chance of setting up a cinematic universe like Marvel have so successfully done, and Waller could have been utilized much like Agent Coulson in Marvel’s films, but instead she comes off as just some random scientist, which was very disappointing.

They should kill Jordan in the next and show the fight between John Stewart and Guy Gardner to become the new Green Lantern of sector 2814.

I have to agree, Hal Jordan is the most boring superhero ever. I would've preferred if they went with Jon stewart or Kyle instead.

Since they brought back Hal from the dead it has been the top selling comic book the last few years. The title was dead before that. Look up the top selling comics the last few years and you will see GL almost always at the top.

OVERPASS BILLBOARDS IN SYDNEY: 'Coming to Australia August 4'; (then after the massacre of US reviews) 'Coming to August 11'!

WB didn't think they could take on Cowboys Vs Aliens, I s'pose...

I might see it in 3D just to see if there's anything redeemable in the effects.

John Stewart is more popular for non comicbook fans.
