In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. I still think that Parallax is going to be the main villain of Green Lantern, and Hector Hammond is just some unfortunate scientist who got caught in the whirlwind of things.

Actually the movie was written before Secret Origin, and was primarily based on EMERALD DAWN first, where the MAIN villain was Legion, a growing tentacle creature that grafts itself onto Oa and consumes sentient beings as it goes , making them a part of itself. Legion was later amalgamated with a Parallax possessed Krona when Geoff Johns came on board and added elements of Secret Origins. Hence the odd look of the Parralax/Krona/Legion type creature of the movie.
