Guillermo Del Toro Talks HELLBOY 3, PACIFIC RIM 2, & JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

While talking with the Daily Best ahead of his Comic-Con appearance, Director Guillermo del Toro revealed what film Legendary said needs to be a success in order for Hellboy 3 to get greentlit.

Hellboy fans all around the world are campaigning, so that the Hellboy franchise can finish off the trilogy. While the cast and crew would love to finish the trilogy, Legendary is a bit weary about the decision. Although, at this year's comic-con, Director Guillermo del Toro revealed to the crowd that “they’re listening," referring to Legendary Pictures and Thomas Tull (the CEO), who also attended the panel discussion.

So, what's the hold up? It seems as though it has a little something to do with money. "The hard fact is that the movie’s going to need about $120 million and there’s nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us.” Guillermo del Toro said while talking with the Daily Best. He then continued, "It would be great to complete the trilogy. But in a way I don’t see the world—the industry—supporting that idea.”

Does this mean that the Hellboy trilogy won't be finished? Even though Legendary isn't strong about the idea, the film can still get greenlit if Guillermo del Toro's other film is a big success. Which film are we talking about? None other than Pacific Rim 2! According to the Daily Beast's report, the following was revealed, "Legendary told Del Toro they might throw down for Hellboy 3 if he makes his next film, the mech-kaiju sequel Pacific Rim 2, a hit."

So there you have it! Hellboy 3's fate lies solely in the hands of Pacific Rim 2. Will the 'Kaiju vs Robot' film succeed? Well, considering the fact that Del Toro choose this film over Justice League Dark, I'm sure he has some good things planned. "Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2." Del Toro said referring to Justice League Dark script. "I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2.” What do you think about all this? dammit, would've preferred him do JLD. But it looks like they already have a script they like, so maybe they're trying to look for a director to take on the script?

So, he chose PR 2 over JLD? Wha?

@ManCalledSting

Yea, Hunnam was a lot better in SOA than PR. Heck, he was better in Undeclared than he was in PR.

Well at least we know that WB are going forward with JLD but i would rather have him do JLD but if they can get him to have some sort of help during production then it would be great

Pacific Rim was a shit film. Don't get why they'd make a sequel. Even if it's gonna get us Hellboy 3, I'm not putting myself through more of that garbage.

@NovaCorpsFan

You're gonna see Pacific Rim 2 or Nic Cage will replace Chris Pratt as Starlord in GOTG 2 and Uwe Boll with direct it over James Gunn.

so basically Pacific Rim 2 means Hellboy 3. This is lame because Pacific Rim wasn't all that good and imo it doesn't deserve a sequel. Still Hellboy 1 wasn't all that good either as i recall, and second was way better. We live in a times when sequels can actually top the originals ;)

What about Jekyll and Hyde ?

Wonder will WB scratch that JLA script and hire someone else to write a new one or rewrite the old one since Del Toro have passed.

Man, I was looking forward to JLD and everything. Even placed it on my collection list. lol

However, weren't shows like Constantine and others supposed to collide into the movie?

I love Del Toro's work because of how much he was inspired by the stories of HP Lovecraft. Even though the guy was extremely discrimative and racist, I have to say that the world of monsters he created was horrifyingly beautiful.

I want Pacific Rim 2. If Justice League Dark wasn't going to be in the DCEU, then i'm not interest. I might get roasted for this, but I do not like Hellboy.

Del Toro said himself a while ago he may not direct JLD but he will produce it and he will write the script to it. It's likely he's still involved but he just won't direct it.

With @TheOracularNerd point

However, weren't shows like Constantine and others supposed to collide into the movie?

del Toro said he would be open to using Matt Ryan in his JLD film as Constantine. Now that the show is cancelled and Del Toro won't direct it, not sure if he will but if the CW does use Matt Ryan as Constantine in cameos in Arrow, Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow; I wouldn't mind that because he [frick]ing nailed Constantine.

Overall everything is going according to plan. Just have some big named actor attached to PR2 and we got a hit.

Arrow is suppose to swallow Constantine. Don't know anything about the movie after that though. If you were talking about WB movies then probably no.
They wanna keep their movies seperate from tv i guess.

Still it would be nice if WB just call Ryan and told him "hold on with that Arrow proposition. We got something better for you". And then BAM ! Ryan in JLD, JLD doing very well at box office, tv series is back ...

thankful wishes.

if not JLD just get Ryan to play Constantine in Sandman. Just seperate his character from Arrow. (never watched the show though but i doubt i would like it. i don't wanna see Constantine in Arrow. Although if it means getting season 2 be greenlighted, i can live with it.)

Yeah .. he would fit much better in Sandman (movie or tv series ... i'm not sure what are they doing with this property right now)

Make this happen, Legendary!

The fact that Del Toro has come down from his initial $200 million estimate to $130 million indicates, to me, that people are still talking about this project behind closed doors and crunching the numbers.

Keeping hope alive.
