GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE - The Late Harold Ramis' Daughter On Watching The Movie For The First Time - SPOILERS

With Ghostbusters: Afterlife now playing in theaters, Violet Ramis Stiel, daughter of the late Harold Ramis, has reflected on the emotional experience of watching the movie for the first time.

Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters: Afterlife is now playing in theaters (you can check out our review here), and THR caught up with the eldest daughter of the late Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler) to get her thoughts on the long-awaited sequel and a certain moment towards the end of the film which has proved to be highly divisive.

Spoilers follow.

During Afterlife's climactic battle, the spirit of Egon returns to help his granddaughter Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and his former teammates (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson) vanquish Gozer the Destroyer. It's a touching moment, but utilizing CGI to "resurrect" actors for posthumous appearances tends to be controversial. Fortunately, Violet Ramis Stiel knew what to expect before sitting down to watch the movie having already read the script.

“He was so careful to get it right, to really honor the early films and everyone who was in them, but also to make something for now and the future,” Stiel said of Reitman, whom she's known since they were kids. “Maybe he is the only person who could do that. He is the physical bridge.”

“One thing that is timely about the movie is yes, it is a comedy, but it is also about loss and grief. And we are all dealing with that,” she continued. “It was surreal. There are so many parallels to real life, but it is just a movie. And it is not actually him. It is a character. Jason, smartly, focused on capturing the Egon character and not necessarily my dad. I feel like it really worked in that way. Ultimately, it leaves us with that feeling: The people we love are always with us. They don’t go away.”

Have you been to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife yet? If so, how do you think Egon's return was handled? Drop us a comment down below.

Anyone else bawl their eyes out at that scene or was it just me?

@newmutantsRETURNS - I was 12 at the time but back then I was Ghostbusters mad.

I hope they have made a true sequel to the Ghostbusters franchise.

@marvel72 - Totally agree, but that boat sailed when Ramis passed away. It's gonna be interesting what they do with this current take.

@BobGarlen - I got misty eyed. I didn't care that the original 3 were so emotionally disconnected and uncomfortable being back in those characters that literally every line delivery felt forced and awkward and sad, it all paid off just seeing them together. All of my concerns about taste or "should they/shouldn't they" were obliterated seeing Egon straight up mirror the Ghost Goku helping Gohan defeat Cell moment from DBZ, and seeing all 4 shoulder to shoulder again.... it was worth it.

Honestly I loved this movie, but absolutely hated parts. Pretty much whenever they just redid a beat for beat element from the original movie, I hated.

But I loved the story. I really enjoyed Phoebe as a character and her chemistry with Podcast (hated that name but the character grew on me). I'd watch more of their story, but honestly thus movie feels like a finale. I don't need anymore Ghostbusters after this.

What it did well, it did very well. The only things I hated were the in your face call backs.

The mini marshmallows made no senses except to wink at the audience. The Stay Puft man was in the original because Ray imagined it in the climax... but what cause did they have for becoming sentient in this version? Just a nod to the audience, and btw that entire Walmart sequence sucked balls.

I loved watching Phoebe uncover her families history, watching the mom struggle with her and her own abandonment issues, how Phoebe even being a scientist is a slap in the face... thats all good character drama. I found that all very compelling, how Egons sacrifice after nobody believed him caused him to give up everything to try to save the world, ended up the Dirt Farmer.... and ruined his family, his daughter and thusly his grand kids are all weird. I found all of that exploration cool.

I dug how they developed Phoebe and Paul Rudds kinda kinship. It felt natural and like a fun bond.

Honestly I like all of these characters. The brother and girlfriend sub plot could have been developed better but it wasn't terrible.

I'd watch another Phoebe Speingler movie, but I'd take a sharp turn and go in another direction. Maybe another Supernatural mystery type thing that's not specifically Ghost related. It would be dope if she became like a Supernatural hunter of sorts with Podcast documenting her exploring.

When I talked to Ernie Hudson he was happy willing to third ghostbuster he said it was more peter Venkman who was opposed to it how ray felt about third I don’t know I can’t reeevr there real names it’s early.,

Here's to the great Harold Ramis! We will always have his films.

(It's not one that is often discussed, but I rather enjoy The Ice Harvest.)

Seeing Harold on the screen like that was both cool and odd at the same time.

It was so well done. Trevor holding Phoebe tightly as she started to cry, the looks on Venkman, Winston and Ray’s faces (Ray even looked like he was fighting tears), Egon closing his eyes tightly as he crosses over. Incredible job.

@Shasvre - I can’t wait to watch at home to see the notes he had written on the photo wall. I imagine they’re notes on important dates in her life or observations that he felt were important to remember but I’m not sure.

Just got back from seeing it, and I loved it. That scene at the end could have gone very badly, but as far as I'm concerned they nailed it.

It was touching and it made me cry. It was bittersweet on many levels being that I feel this was closure for the actors being we never got a proper 3rd film and closure also for the originals as there will probably be a sequel with the kids. That being said the film was an utter letdown and a very wasted opportunity to do something very wild. But then again maybe it’s not for me just like a lot of kids toda or a majority rather don’t find the original ghostbusters all that great and to me that cool. Now there will be a new generation of 5 year olds running around with proton packs in a grocery store just like I did at 5. And I love it

I loved this movie. It also hits on a few levels bc the scene where the OG’s talk to him and apologized very much felt like not only the characters saying it but the actors as well. It feels very much like “we should have done this sooner” and given the well documented delays and refusals to get a third one going it definitely felt like they were in some ways speaking directly to Harold
