GHOSTBUSTERS Director Jason Reitman Explains How He Conceived The Sequel's Story

At a recent Ghostbusters fan event, director Jason Reitman explained how his idea was conceived, in addition to the themes and focus of the sequel. The film will be a love letter to the franchise's legacy.

As the son of the original's director, Jason Reitman is seeing the next Ghostbusters film as a very personal challenge. The sequel, based on a concept that's very near and dear to his heart, will see the return of the original cast members with Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard as the leads.

The movie is scheduled to begin shooting this July.

At a recent Ghostbusters fan panel, Reitman explained his intentions for the new film with a statement that was undeniably endearing and heartfelt.

We wanted to make a love letter to the original movie. And this is a story that I -- again, I did not expect to be making a new Ghostbusters movie. I thought I was going to be this Indie dude who made Sundance movies. And then this character came to me. She was a 12 year old girl. I didn’t know who she was or why she popped into my head, but I saw her with a proton pack in her hand. And I wrote this story. This story began to form over many years actually. It started with a girl and all of a sudden it was a family. And eventually I knew this movie that I needed to make, that I needed to write.

Reitman's passion for all things Ghostbusters is undeniable, and that's something that will hopefully be reflected by this new movie.

Ghostbusters hits theaters next summer.

Given the plot description and the casting decisions, how is his answer to that question not "I saw that scene in Season 2 of Stranger Things and thought that would make a cool movie"

I'll just remain cautiously optimistic.

There are few general ideas you can pitch to me that I can't imagine working. It's all in the doing.

I think it’s safe to say the kid, and family, are related to one of the original Ghostbusters. Probably Egon. Hopefully they don’t have the little girl actually shooting a proton pack though 😬

@newhire13 - I don't know why not. If she's a tinkerer like I was at her age, that's probably what she does.

@ImmovableForce - because she can easily kill herself or someone else. You wouldn’t give a 12 year old a machine gun

@ImmovableForce - Because it’s just as lame as the Junior Ghostbusters from the cartoon and the entire thing about Proton Packs was that they’re a bitch to use, even for an adult.

@campblood - You also don't tinker with nuclear reactors for the same reasons, but in Ghostbusters they were messing with stuff like that and worse. It's a comedy with these sorts of elements. Genius kids are quirky characters who fit well into this sort of world.

@newhire13 - I'm guessing in the teaser they released the barn that Ecto1 was in belongs to Ray's parents house that they mortgaged to buy the firehouse in the first movie. "You didn't even haggle with them..." lol.

The original Ghostbusters is may fave ever movie. The ghost logo has been my only phone wallpaper on any phone I've ever had and I've played through the game on my old PS3 more times than I can remember. I want this movie to win. I want it to give me the same feeling that I get whenever I watch the original. Story and plot are all well and good, but to me, it's the "feeling" of watching a Ghostbusters movie that I want them to get 100% right.
