OCEAN'S 8 Star Sandra Bullock Brands Backlash To The GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot As Completely Unfair

Sandra Bullock, who headlines Oceans 8 the all-female entry in the heist franchise, has been speaking to Variety about the hate received by another female-led re-imagining, Paul Feig's Ghostbusters...

There's been something of a push in Hollywood of late to finally deliver works in genre circles and existing franchises that feature a prominent level of female representation. While some view this as a fair expansion of the cinematic landscape and welcome a fresh perspective to new and existing properties, some seemingly consider this an affront to the typically male-dominated franchises that they hold dear.

No work so perfectly embodies that than the Paul Feig directed Ghostbusters reboot that seemed to send the internet to new levels of aggression and misogyny, before a trailer had even been released. Now, another female-centered entry in an existing franchise is coming to our screens: Oceans 8.

While speaking to Variety, Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock who is headlining the film was asked about the scorn that befell the Paul Feig directed Ghostbusters.

“That was unfair on a level that I can’t even not be mad about talking about. They literally walked into a firing squad. You had five of the most gifted comedian actresses on the planet — I’m just gonna leave it at that. And it doesn’t just take five people to make a movie. It takes about 300, so, you know what? Let’s back off the meanness. Let’s have a year of kindness. The women are here — we’re not going anywhere. But this isn’t about just women. We like sitting at the table with men. We just want to be invited to their table as well because we like them at our table.”

Oceans 8  has fared significantly better than Ghostbusters, however, with early reviews being extremely positive, praising both the film's flair and the chemistry of the cast. Despite this, the film still came under criticism by those who felt that having the previous four films completely with men was fine but that taking that concept and applying it to an all-woman cast was tokenism, agenda pushing and something to be critiqued.

It remains to be seen whether Oceans 8 will be a hit with audiences when it debuts in US cinemas tomorrow but with early buzz being good and feelings on 2016's Ghostbusters softening since its release, maybe we're reaching a point where the notion of female-centered entries in genre franchises isn't one to inherently bring vitriol.

What do you think? Were you surprised by the hate that Ghostbusters received? Are you looking forward to Oceans 8? Leave your thoughts below.

That movie is the worst piece of shit I have ever seen... and it's not because of the women

@ccxa - People need to shut the [frick] up about this already. Yes the movie had a main female cast, but it also had a crappy first trailer, it was also a reboot when people wanted a sequel, it had dumb jokes, that dont fit the Ghostbuster style. So what people can only hate a movie if it stars a white male, if you don't like a movie with a female cast you are sexist, if you dont like a movie with an african american cast you are racist. A lot of my favorit characters are female and this movie and ghostbusters still looked like crap.

@ccxa -
This, none of the problems with that movie are because of the sex of the characters. The issues lie in the insultingly terrible writing coupled with the poor directing and reliance on weak jokes and a studio incapable of understanding it's target audience.

Sandra Bullock seems to be speaking from a position of unfamiliarity with what actually happened with the Ghostbusters reboot.

Paul Feig had no understanding of what Ghostbusters was about and want to introduce Ghost aliens while 'playing it safe' by stealing plot aspects from previous films - he also made a considerable amount of the jokes at the expense of the male characters while Sony slandered the fanbase as 'sexist' simply so they could try and promote a terrible movie. Like Star Wars it's a case of those working on the project attacking the fanbase (Biting the hand that feeds them) and the results were as expected - the movie bombed.

Oceans 8 actually looks 'ok' from the trailer - could even be a good film. No reason it needed to be connected to the Oceans franchise, but i suppose they wanted to use a brand name because they do not have faith in the project. People involved commenting on the Ghostbusters Reboot fiasco and supporting the rudeness and attacks on the fanbase or trying to blame 'sexism' despite that not being the reason for Ghostbusters bombing is going to reflect badly on Oceans 8 as people will view it as another male hating film like Ghostbusters built to be a cashgrab reboot with a female cast.

@Scarilian @ccxa

I didn't see the movie, so I'm not going to comment on whether it was good or bad. I had no interest in seeing it, quite frankly.

But what I think that Sandra Bullock is speaking about is not the people who saw the legitimate problems with the film. I think she's speaking about the angry fanboys who were pissed off that the cast was female.

Whether we like it or not, there are a TON of angry assholes out there who ARE sexist. Seriously, go read the comments on the trailer for this movie on YouTube. So many people were angry that the cast was female.

You can totally hate this movie without being sexist. But there are those people out there who hated this movie BECAUSE of the female cast: and those people are the problem that Sandra Bullock is speaking about (I think).

In short: there's a difference between hating a movie that has a female cast, and hating a movie BECAUSE it has a female cast.

@knocturnalzen10 - It's got a comfortable 73% RT score from 91 reviews, if that means much to you. Obviously that will fluctuate when the film opens but critically at least that sits it below the 2001 remake but above the other three for now.

@FromACertainPOV - It has 6.2 rating to be fair.

@FromACertainPOV - This is true, although if you read most of the positive reviews individually, most of them don't sound all that positive. Most of them make it seem like if the movie is okay at best.

Well it's not sitting at 0% on RT so clearly they exist.

Top 10 reasons Ghostbusters (2016) was bad
1. It exists
2. the humor is dumbed down
3. Fart jokes, prat falls, and cliches
4. Forgettable villain
5. That awful Fall Out Boy remix
6. The uncomfortable cameos from the original actors
7. Making it gender flipped doesn't hide the fact that Hollywood is clearly running out of ideas
8. The unfocused narrative. Is it a remake, is it a reboot, is it a sequel
9. Awful CGI
10. If you can't appreciate the subtle comedic brilliance of the original, you were born in the wrong decade.

If it was gonna be really great it would have been regardless of fan backlash, was criticism unfair, sure, but I think we have all moved on by now.
