As of today Warner bros are the Number one studio at the box office for 2017 domestically leading the nearest competitor (Disney by 270 million).
All year Warner bros have been having a good year, but most people in the media won't say anything about it, in fact, they are on course to have their best year ever at the domestic box office.
I bring this point up not to attack other studios but to bring recognition to the great work that Warner bros are doing in 2017 that has been under-reported so far. While major Hollywood outlets like Hollywood reporter and variety have been quick to let people know about the achievements of other competitors like Disney, they have been slow or in some cases flat-out overlooked the achievements of Warner bros and even been quick to only highlight the negatives.
2.DCEU is moving in the right direction
Wonder woman was a stunning hit, being loved both critically and commercially, it outgrossed movies like winter soldier and iron man 3 despite not being allowed to open in many countries in fact at the domestic box office it outgrossed every comic book movie ever apart from both avengers and The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. High praise when you remember all the people who ran with a toxic narrative against it all the way, in many cases it felt like some of these sites were praying for it to fail so that they can maintain their precious DCEU is in trouble narrative. In the end, it set many records and hit many important milestones not just in Comic book movies but Movies in general (like highest grossing movie ever directed by a woman).
Justice league hasn't been released yet, but the initial critic reactions are positive. Almost every person that has seen it so far has either liked it overall or loved it overall. There are still those hoping it will fail, but most of those people seem heavily invested in the Anti Dceu narrative and seem more concerned with keeping that going than judging the movie fairly. I'm glad to report however most of the people that have seen it so far have kept an open mind and so enjoyed the movie. I anticipate this will be the case for the General populous.
Warner Bros hit it out of the park this year with their horror movies.
IT grossed 680 Million of a 35million budget while Annabelle: creations grossed 305Million off a budget of 15 million. Warner bros horror movies have grossed a billion dollars of a 50million dollar budget.
These are great wins for the studio and also needs to be recognized too but for whatever reason, many in media have stayed quiet about this.
Despite many in Hollywood becoming risk-averse, I'm happy to say that warner bros continued to bring originality and continued to back auteur directors. Christopher Nolans Dunkirk did terrific business and is being touted for Awards by the academy.
Jordan Vogt- Roberts Kong skull island also did good business and set up the Godzilla, King Kong showdown beautifully.
Even Blade runner 2049 which will ultimately fail financially was an excellent movie and only emphasizes that Warner Bros will back auteur director if they have a compelling vision. This should not be understated
lastly, I also wanted to shout out to the games section, particularly because of Injustice 2, which is easily the best fighting game since the Injustice 1, it is important to note that Injustice was the top selling game of Q2 for 2017.
It's important to highlight this because to me Warner bros have gotten all their ducks in a row, their comics are doing well and have just poached Brian Michael Bendis no doubt to replace Geoff Johns who is moving into a Kevin Feige like role. The TV series are all still doing very well
For too long many people have used the DCEU (wrongly in my opinion) as an excuse to diminish and undermine Warner bros achievements. That is despite the evidence contradicting the narrative, for example, the DCEU outgrossed what many consider to be the standard bearer, The MCU at the domestic box office last year and if suicide squad had opened in China, it would have made a real run at outgrossing it overall. This is not to attack the MCU merely to point out that some of the hyperventilating and excessive shade thrown at the dceu has been unjust and unwarranted.
I'm not saying the DCEU is perfect, there are still some elements that I have problems with but the consensus is that a big chunk of those issues have been ironed out in Justice league and like wonder woman we are going to get a less divisive and more crowd-pleasing movie. I hope through reading this article more people will be informed and start to give the WB their respect
