Editorial: ABUSE ALERT! Member's are abusing 'ABUSE ALERT'!

The Abuse Alert system is meant to be used to police the site by members.
Unfortunately members are betraying the intent of this system.

I've done a little research. I've examined 'The Hall of Shame' for the past two days and discovered many who are reporting other's with an 'Abuse Alert' aren't contributing. I've dug into thread post history ,as well as article's contributed and found very little to nothing offered by the member's reporting other member's as deserving an 'Abuse Alert'.

Now if these member's were actively posting comments on the threads or offering editorials or FanFic contributions regularly for example, I wouldn't be so suspicious, but that's not the case.

In some instances, I couldn't find ANY comments posted from these members!

I did find a few contributions from some, but most were weeks or months old.

What does this tell me?

There are member's here who simply troll this site , find comments or other member's they don't like , and maliciously tag them with a 'Abuse Alert' badge.

Some of these member's I've never even SEEN ONCE post ANYTHING at all!
I don't recognize their avatar or screen name.

They seem intent on imposing their own brand of policing on this site without the concern of repercussion...or even offering a comment on the threads!

I've seen the most petty and unoffensive things tagged --- it actually made me feel sorry for the poster of the thread.

This is getting out of hand.

Obviously these members are getting their "jollies" tagging other members for whatever warped reason, and it's got to stop.

I VERY RARELY get tagged , so this isn't a big deal with me personally, but when I am , I'd like to know why.
There were times when it was warranted, and times it's just a jealous jerk with an agenda .

So whoever you all are, please stop.
I'm sure your life has more value and worth than to sink to the level of 'troll'.

Get a hobby...or actively contribute to the site , just don't tag members with 'Alert' badges , look in the mirror and declare yourself some righteous internet crusader.

It's pathetic and you're pathetic.

I don't use the abuse system because honestly snitching is not going to get you no where in life. Many people get reported for just expressing their opinions, which is stupid. The only time I would even report someone is if I know they are a troll and do the same shit or if their comments is racist or flat out inappropriate.

@TonyChu

What exactly is snitching to you?

Reporting people for expressing their opinions is as you say stupid, but not "snitching" moreso than being a dick. Reporting people for being a troll/being racist/inappropriate, which you say you do do, is what though? Do you consider that to be snitching/not snitching? I'm just wondering because it wasn't clear from your post, as you start off by saying you don't use the abuse system because of the link you make with snitching.

I'm curious about the idea of "snitches are bitches" a lot of people have around here, as though they think this is "the streets" where crimes go unnoticed by police (if not for a snitch), not an online forum where trolling comments are completely in the open for everyone, including admins/editors, to see. Personally, I let other people do the reporting, but I don't see it as snitching either.

Sorry if that was convoluted.

Yah, I've seen people get reported over nothing. I guess some people just have too much time on their hands.

If you're going to report someone, at least have the balls to tell them why.

I know teabag's images get reported a lot. Some people are serious prudes. And when I check the "Hall of Shame", it's by someone who hardly contributes to the site, if ever.

Great article. This needs to be on main.

Recently, I was reported by Tonychu because he deemed something I said about "black history month" to be racist. Galactus saw my comment and immeadiatly took away my troll. The owner was able to see I was truthfully speaking my opinion. Just don't get riled up by the Hall and it won't affect you.

The trolling on Avengers and TDKR articles made me break my no-reporting motto. A user named Illwill whom I don't see anymore and TheSharkKnight are the only people I've reported to date. It takes some consistently bad behavior to get me to report someone.

I have, however, seen exactly what you're talking about.
TonyChu

@ Irons Im not comparing the troll system to real life snitching, I was using it as a funny comparison. The way I see it is the system is a double edged sword. Yes trolls get reported but at the same time people who are just expressing their God honest opinion get reported as well. The way I see it is if you are making immature and inhumane comments then you should get reported. But not for expressing your mind.
TonyChu
TonyChu - 4/8/2012, 7:57 PM
@ golden123 Thats because your comments were immature and borderline racist. Who are you to say that there should be no Black History Month and that whites do more for this country than any other race. That right there is ignorant and stupid beyond comprehension. Its comments like that should be reported not "Oh I think the Avengers is going to be better than TDKR."

.Thanks for taking the time to put this together, maybe those that are a little quick on the button will pause and think about it for a moment first. Personally, I don't report because I'm following this site in a free country where people can say what they feel. We may hate those opinions, views, or attitudes at times but that's really what keeps things from ever getting boring and sparks crazy debates. That being said I do think the hall is a good feature to expose ACTUAL trolls, and spammers so the powers that be can decide what to do with them.

Jk, i agree with what you are saying, i was looking at some of the messages that got people tagged and some people were just expressing their opinions. Which is dumb
that they got tagged because this is a forum.

I only ever report people if I think their argument is getting too hostile/personal.

But to do as the poster suggests, and tell them why, when they're already being unreasonable and hostile?

Yeah... no. I'm reporting them so I won't HAVE to deal with their shit, not get in the middle of it.

whilst I agree with most of what you said I find it quite disturbing that your trying to connect people that don't comment 'actively' to this problem. People that comment 'actively' do it too I believe.

Those posters are regular posters you see every day. They are logging in with a different name to false-report people. They ARE contributing to the thread, but with their main username. Like cowards.

It's unfortunate. The system was made to combat douchebags, but ironically, douches are the main ones that use it.

I've never used the abuse system, since the arguments and idiots feeding the trolls here usually amuse me.

But seriously, give your head a shake, just because a member 'lurks' instead of posting, doesn't mean they should have to put up with morons filling the comments with crud.
