Things studios can learn from Green Lantern

The Green Lantern was possibly one of the worst comic book movies of the summer but what can studios learn from it?

The Green Lantern was possibly the most anticipated film of the year. Several trailers showcased great special effects, good action sequences and lots of shots in space, however when the movie came out we were greeted by a horrendous flop. It wasn't that it was a bad film it was just that it didn't live up to the hype it was setting. So I have decided to put together a list of things studios can learn from Green Lantern.

You can never have too much of a good thing

There is no denying that the best parts of the film were set in space and with the corps, so why did we not see much off them. Was it because of budget worries, concerns about finishing the CGI or was it that too much of the focus was already on Earth? Whatever it was sure left disapointment as practically every trailer showed more corps footage that footage set on Earth. Imagine how much better the film would have been if it spent more time in space introducing other places Hal would be defending apart from Earth and less time with Carol.

Don't overhype a film

Before Green Lantern started getting reviewed there was almightily good things being said about it, the biggest one being a comparison to star wars from Ryan Reynolds. Comparing a film to Star wars is going to set the bar pretty high, so either the film is really something special or you have no idea what you are talking about. I'm going with the latter.

Just focus on the one movie

Before Green lantern was even released there was serious talks of turning it into Warner Brothers new trilogy after Christopher Nolans Batman and Harry Potter. This is probably the reason why Sinestro didn't have much to do during the film, so that in a sequel he can create the sinestro corps and fight Hal and the Green Lantern corps.

Never cast Blake Lively

One of the biggest complaints with green lantern viewers so I am not going to dwell on the fact that they cast someone who made me hate the character and made me want to hit them several times and shove green lantern rings in every available orifice.

Citing Blake Lively as one of the big reasons the movie failed is the least reason why Green Lantern failed. Poor writing caused Green Lantern to fail and it showed. Poor development of Sinestro, Parallax, Krona and the corps.

First off people need to stop living in denial. GL was a VERY BAD film. Every non-comicbook person I know who saw it found it to be terrible and regretted wasting their time and money. It wasn't simply a matter of not living up to expectations or being overhyped; IT WAS CRAP.

THINGS STUDIOS CAN LEARN FROM GL:
1: Do not make movies based upon crappy DC characters with silly cheesy mythos.
2: Hire creative talent with some passion for the material.
3: Plan your budgetting, post production, marketing, etc., AFTER removing your head from your @$$.

@Coldblood6 Yeah that crappy DC character has been outselling
all Marvel and DC solo hero books for the last five years.
I agree with your 2nd and 3rd comments. This movie could have
used better writing and production. There was no reason for a CG suit.
They could have used the money they saved from the suit to at
least put in more corp moments.
Now go off yourself you useless douche.

Sorry m1312020, but what's cool for DC fanboys (or comicbook readers on the whole) does not equate good material for the general public. End of story. The colour coded emotion power magic rings from space is a silly cheesy mythos; doesn't mean you can't have good stories with good writing. But even with good writing it doesn't mean that it can translate to mass market appealling, live-action material for the general audience.

When WB/DC proves me wrong I'll be happy to say I was wrong. But as it stands now reality is backing me up.

Here's a hint: Better writers, cast, save for Sinestro, and more action in SPACE! @Teabag: Yes, there was a lack of boobs in the film. Unfortunate.
