The adaptation of the Japanese graphic-novel All You Need Is Kill has been in development for a while, with Tom Cruise interested in the main role for quite some time as well. Now, Variety reports Cruise has agreed to star in the movie, albeit there's no deal officially signed at the moment.

Apparently, Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov wanted a big star for the movie since the beginning, and despite the fact that the script had a younger actor for the role, like Joseph Gordon Levitt for an example, the studio decided to go with Cruise. The script has already been rewritten so that the character can match Cruise's age.

Dante Harper was responsible for the initial script with Joby Harold working on the rewrite. Tom Cruise was so enthused about the script that he had director Doug Liman visit him in Pittsburgh, where the actor was shooting One Shot.

Liman has put All You Need Is Kill as his next project, while Cruise has a busy schedule, with Oblivion beginning production in March, which will allow Liman to work on Kill or Luna while Cruise is not available.

Based on the graphic novel, the original story is in the vein of "Groundhog Day," with a twist: A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier.

3 Arts Entertainment's Tom Lassally, Jason Hoffs and Erwin Stoff will serve as producers.

I've read the manga and its pretty good, whilst I have no problems with Cruise, they should have just gone with JGL the dudes an amazing actor. The whole premise is about a young soldier gaining experience over the countless battles. But oh well I just hope it turns out well.

@MovieTheaterLad well the whole concept is not buying the guy as a soldier cause he's so inexperienced by the end of the end your meant to buy in to the fact that he's a soldier.

This should be good.....however, I'd rather they had a better director on than Doug Liman. The guy is pretty hit or miss. Regardless, I'm pumped to see Tom Cruise in to BIG sci-fi films back to back!

Looking forward to it.

@MTL

Maybe off the top of your head, but JGL hasnt turned in ONE performance where i wasnt completely sold on his character. Ive seen all of his movies except one....dude is a fcuking chameleon! I'd pick JGL over Tom Cruise for just about ANY role.

@scorpion8125, you're a homophobic tabloid freak who thinks it's your gospel.

mmm anyway, JGL who? the guy who can't lead a movie to $$? The guy who can't lead any movie. period.

I just had a big laugh knowing that MIGP (Tom Cruise's franchise) has just made 700M worldwide. JJ Abrams didn't seem to have any control over it, Jeremy Renner who? All I remember seeing is "Tom Cruise Mission Impossible" "TC Productions" "Starring Tom Cruise"

I think the budget for AYKIS is around 150 mill. They don't want to pull a John Carter casting nobodies like JGL. Just the bitter truth.
