THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Brings Back Some Familiar Characters From The Original Trilogy - SPOILERS

The Matrix Resurrections is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max (you can check out our review here), so we decided to take a closer look at some of the more spoiler-y elements of this fourth instalment in the sci-fi franchise.

We've already outlined how Neo and Trinity are brought back to life, and here you'll find a breakdown of every returning character - some of whom look very different to the last time we saw them.

As previously reported, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Morpheus, but not the younger version of Laurence Fishburne's character most of us assumed. This Morpheus is actually a construct created by Neo (Keanu Reeves), and can't take human form outside the Matrix.

Priyanka Chopra, meanwhile, plays an older incarnation of the "exile without a purpose" introduced in Reloaded, Sati. She keeps an eye on "Thomas" as one of his game developer colleagues and ends up devising the plan to take down The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris).

The trailers included some big hints that Jonathan Groff would be playing Agent Smith, and sure enough, Neo's megalomaniacal nemesis returns for another showdown wearing a new face. Fortunately for Neo, Smith ultimately decides to help him take down The Analyst (his motivations are... a little murky).

Jada Pinkett Smith is also back on board as Niobe (now at least 85), who leads the free people of Io (a human city built from the ruins of Zion). She's initially reluctant to help, but relents and agrees to help Neo rescue Trinity from the machines.

Lambert Wilson reprises the role of The Merovingian for one action sequence. Now an exile, the Frenchman hurls insults at Neo and his crew as they battle other exiles, and is extremely irritating.

Finally, it's suggested - but not confirmed - that The Analyst is another incarnation of The Architect from Reloaded. He's still a horrible bastard.

Did you watch The Matrix Resurrections yet? If so, did you notice any more returning characters? Drop us a comment down below.

I fell asleep like an hour into the movie. Going to give it another try

@MyCoolYoung - I fell asleep during ShangChi because I was exhausted, not because I didn’t like the movie, Had to rewatch it. I also fell asleep during eternal, that was because I didn’t like it, until I woke up. From that point forward I was like man I wish I did not miss whatever I missed, everything between the London battle and the forest battle, and I did not re-watch it. I’ll find out on D+. Just like I found out what happened before the Nirvana song on black widow. I got into that one late. So the only one I rewatched in theaters was Shang Chi. I also re-watched venom let there be carnage, and the second viewing confirmed that I did not like that movie. It was hard to really know the first time, but the second time, I realized the symbiote was an idiot.

@TheWalkingCuban - Curious as to what any of that has to do with The Matrix Resurrections? Asking for a friend...

@SonOfAGif - Well I’m undecided if I’m going to get there late, fall asleep, or decide the symbiote, sorry, agent, is an idiot.

@MyCoolYoung -

I fell asleep too the first time around. I finally watched the full film, and while I enjoyed the first act and there were some cool scenes it felt wholly unnecessary. It didn't justify it's length or existance.

The whole "meta" aspect went too far. It kept winking at the audience non-stop. Then there's the flashbacks to remind us of the first film connecting to something in this one. There's flashback after flashback and then a flashback to a scene with Sati that we just saw about 40 minutes ago.

I agree with Ror's review.

@TheWalkingCuban - OT: So I had a crazy theory. And it involves a massive spoiler from No Way Home & Hawkeye.
TheWalkingCuban

@SonOfAGif - That’s on topic to me but go on
SonOfAGif

@TheWalkingCuban - Basically at the end of No Way Home when he's swinging over Rockerfeller center it's because the police radar he was listening to was reporting shots fired in a neighboring building (Hawkeye Final Battle) and the moment he saw it was Hawkeye, He remained nearby just in case but refused to intervene because he no longer wants to be associated with The Avengers or have any Avenger look into him anymore.

@SonOfAGif - what a coward. In theory, of course
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 12/23/2021, 12:15 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - It adds more weight to his acceptance of the consequences of the spell. Since this would be a complete reset for him, He would avoid wanting to join a team again and focus on being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and not an Avenger. This would also give his character reason to no longer intervene in Avenger conflicts.

@MyCoolYoung - I struggled the first hour myself but got through it. There is nothing special about that movie. Wasn’t horrible but wasn’t good either. If Jessica Henwick wasn’t there I would’ve been finishing the Witcher

Tpo81 - 12/23/2021, 12:24 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - yeah dude, I love Tom hardy so it should be a great fit. But it isn’t at all. I cannot stand the voice/personality they use for venom. Just a colossal miss with the character. I thought the first one was better than the second. Carnage is one of the best marvel villains ever & was wasted terribly. I don’t get how it was a success. They really should think about turning down the over the top bromance between Eddie & Venom.

Tpo81 - 12/23/2021, 12:29 AM
@Humperdink - this movie’s fight scenes should’ve been awesome. The first one was so groundbreaking. I expected great visual fight scenes & they were just ok. I prefer the outdated fight scenes from the original to this one.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 12:47 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - venom is the worst movie I've seen this year quite easily. The matrix was a mixed of it being a little boring and me being exhausted. I'm definitely going to re-watch.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 12:48 AM
@SonOfAGif - ah, I do like that. I suppose none of the avengers or drinking triple J’s Kool-Aid. If so he might have a problem but until then, yeah just swing around and punch some Spiderman villains. Of course with this movie making well over $1 billion by the time it’s done, I’m guessing we will be seeing him team up with a Avengers again, just a matter of time, if not in the very next movie LOL
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 12:49 AM
@Humperdink - the meta aspect of it got irritating really fast. I haven't finished yet but yeah when neo first met morpheus I was somewhat done with it
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 12:49 AM
@Tpo81 - how you like the Witcher so far?
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 12:51 AM
@Tpo81 - Problem is part two about the same as part one , You take away China from part one and you have the box office for part two. In other words the powers that be are going to learn the wrong lessons and give people the stupid stuff that makes money. Topher Grace was better. I never thought I’d say that. And his venom was too small yes but actually menacing, not, pardon my French, retawded.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 12:53 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I’ll check it out and yes venom was, But I watched wonder woman 1984 this year so to me that was, and I started watching new mutants this year and never finished it so it to me that was. Don’t worry I won’t make a musical called To me that was.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 1:20 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - it sounds catchy I think you should. I only got like 15 minutes into new mutants and just decided it’d be better if I stopped there.

Wonder Woman 2 worst than venom 2? 🤔 nah I got venom taking that title
solskulldeath
solskulldeath - 12/23/2021, 5:38 AM
@MyCoolYoung - you are not the only one.me too. and I found the third act is cringe. the only thing good in this movie is Bug and the gang.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 6:17 AM
@MyCoolYoung - They were both hokey but the wishing stuff man, it took that movie to another level
Tpo81
Tpo81 - 12/23/2021, 10:16 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I love it, I am so in love with yennefer & the actress that plays her.
Tpo81
Tpo81 - 12/23/2021, 10:21 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - ur 100% right. Venom although looks awesome is quite retawded lol. Classic case of Sony not knowing wtf they are doing, such a misinterpretation of the venom I care about. He just wants to eat constantly? Tom Hardy plays a Eddie so weirdly too. Almost a Leto/Joker take on how off he is in my opinion
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 10:52 AM
@Tpo81 - yeah that’s an accurate comparison. The mania would match if he were less redeemable, more obsessive, but there’s no Spidey to obse- oh wait yes there is-ah gone again, I spoke too soon!
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 12:21 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - they both felt very dated like how could these movies get made in 2020/2021? I at least like parts of the action in Wonder Woman. I literally didn’t like any aspect of venom 2. Can’t believe how they had woody acting in it
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/23/2021, 12:21 PM
@solskulldeath - yeah I’m seeing the reception around here. It’s probably because we are all in the matrix and didn’t get it
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/23/2021, 12:36 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Woody was terrible in jail tho a little better with the symbiote. When it comes down to it both are 1 star out of 7 (I’m weird) to me. New mutants also. Those movies sucked
FlammableSolid
FlammableSolid - 12/23/2021, 7:27 PM
@Tpo81 - I thought the same mate. The matrix either invented new filming techniques or improved on them and they’ve not been surpassed to my recollection and this film didn’t or couldn’t invent anything groundbreaking. Was a good watch but not groundbreaking. I think it was miles better than the two sequels but still pales in comparison to the original.
I had a chat with my mate in the pub about this tonight and said imagine if the three previous movies had never happened then this would be either a masterpiece or a completely original movie in this day and age of the franchise.

I hate the Meta stuff. This movies a mess. There's some really good ideas in it though. I THINK ITS TIME TO PASS THE REIGNS TO A NEW DIRECTOR THOUGH IF THERY CONTINUE.

I just finished...Yawn. It was rough. Roommates and I in fell in and out of paying attention at times. Paused the movie for a good 20 minutes and then hopped back in. The meta stuff got tiring, the plot was a mess and it just felt like interesting ideas that weren’t really ironed out well.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 12/22/2021, 11:29 PM
@BlackBeltJones - And the action sucked. They definitely didn’t have Yuen Woo Ping on this one.

WB/HBOMAX should move quick on a Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, MORPHEUS 2.0 Limited Series. So much potential for he and the now ambiguous Smith to explore as they can exist beyond any living character and go even further into the future. Would be a shame though to not see more of Jessica Henwick. She was the glue of this picture.

Glad to see the Film has stabilized around 68-70% on RT. A film of this ambition and subversion was bound to be divisive. But seems like enough folks are “getting it”. Which is a breath of fresh air.

Oh and the Analyst…yeah, not the Architect. He even states this.

I’m so glad I watched this on HBOMAX and didn’t waste the money at a theater.
