After the last two Matrix movies, fans have spent a long time hoping for a fourth chapter that can recapture the classic first instalment's magic. Whether The Matrix Resurrections manages to accomplish this remains to be seen, but with just over a month to go before we find out, excitement is definitely building.

However, it turns out that we nearly missed out on the movie altogether. Talking to Collider, star Jessica Henwick revealed that director Lana Wachowski considered throwing in the towel during production. Why? Because the blockbuster was forced to go on hiatus as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"When we were shut down for COVID and we went off three months, I think it was, I still was at home training every day, even though we didn't know if we were going back," the Iron Fist alum recalls. "When we got shut down for COVID, Lana said, 'Well, maybe that's it. Maybe we won't come back and film the rest of it. Maybe the new Matrix will go down as this legendary film which [is] incomplete, and no one will ever be able to see it. Maybe that's what this is meant to be.'"

"And we were all going, 'No, you have to finish the film.' But she really did toy with the idea of just calling it quits. I don't know if I'm meant to be talking about that."

That might sound like an overreaction, but there was so much uncertainty surrounding what would happen to the movie industry, no one can blame Wachowski for wondering if throwing in the towel might have been easiest! Luckily, the cast and crew were able to return and the movie was finished.

The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

The fourth instalment of the franchise arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.

Maybe she realized that doing another one was a bad idea? I'm holding out hope. But something tells me this will be the first one again, slightly different

@bobevanz - or it was exactly what Henwick said above

I feel her, the trilogy ended on a rather perfect note and doing a fourth one that would undo what happened in the previous trilogy by bringing back the characters from the previous saga always was a risky-cashgrab idea.

I'm sure the movie was greenlit to have a cashgrab on the Keanu Rennaisance and Lana got some retroactive regrets about joining the project.

If there ever would have been a new Matrix project it should have been in the past or future but never a direct sequel to the Neo saga.

Wait, what? It was complete. You had a full trilogy showing the journey of neo leading to his sacrifice. You even talk about the decision to bring back neo as cathartic, rather than always planned.

I'm looking forward to this movie but also dreading it.

Hugely excited for this but a bit dismayed that the marketing for it has been fairly lacklustre, it's out for release in 4 weeks and there's very little push from the studio I feel.

@elgaz - you’re out of touch with how marketing pushes work then. Dec 1 get ready

@McMurdo - Other blockbusters in recent years (e.g. Dark Knight Rises) had many more TV spots, cast interviews, articles and billboards/posters in the final 2 months before release. I'm very aware there's a big push in the final month to build hype but I still feel the overall marketing for the 4th film in such an iconic franchise has been somewhat lacking.

Maybe… we are all in the the 4th movie and taking place all around us. MAYBE This trailer is just a simulation inside a simulation.

Wow. Sounds like she's got a lot of faith in it!

@globaltravels - She was probably going through a rough time like most people were. She’s human. This doesn’t sound like her lamenting the quality of the film so much as having a moment where she didn’t feel 100 percent positive that it would get finished.

Just hype building social media comment, nothing more.
