THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Does Okay Streaming Numbers On HBO Max But Was Most Pirated Movie Of The Week

The Matrix Resurrections hit HBO Max the same day it arrived in theaters, but those streaming figures aren't much better than the box office takings. However, the movie did do well on piracy websites...

After a five-day opening that saw The Matrix Resurrections earn a paltry $22.5 million at the domestic box office, it's looking like the latest instalment of the franchise is shaping up to be a flop. Some fans have blamed that simultaneous HBO Max release, but numbers overseas haven't been much better.

Now, Deadline has shared some streaming data courtesy of Samba TV revealing that Lana Wachowski's movie was watched by 2.8 million smart TV households in the U.S. between Wednesday and Sunday. It's an okay result that means the movie ranks behind Godzilla vs. King's 3.6 million views in the same five-day period. Why the comparison? Well, that was also released in theaters (while most of us were still waiting for a vaccine) and earned $48.1 million.

There just didn't seem to be much buzz surrounding The Matrix Resurrections, though it's possible the movie will generate a little more interest as time goes by. Either way, it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. considering a sequel with numbers like these, so don't be surprised if a reboot follows a few years from now.

The trade also notes that despite underwhelming box office and streaming numbers, the fourth instalment of the franchise was the most pirated movie for the week beginning December 20. It topped the HD version of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and camera copies of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

"A wholly unnecessary epilogue to The Matrix trilogy, Resurrections retreads old ground, delivers mediocre action, and proves itself a tough pill to swallow despite a decent enough love story that, alone, isn't enough to justify revisiting this franchise. Time for a reboot," we said in our review of the movie that earned a disappointing B- CinemaScore from moviegoers last week.

Just another episode of WB execs and their stupidass decisions.

I have hbomax and still have not had the desire to watch this.

“Look. I think when you’ve had a franchise with that much potential money making capability, there’s always talk. It’s in the same way that the Marvel universe repeats and turns in on itself, or you have Spider-Man, or you have Iron Man, or Thor,” said Matrix Resurrections producer James McTeigue. “There’s always potential to update those movies just because of the possibility of making the money and telling new stories."🤑

I'll probably watch it when either a) HBO Max becomes available here, or b) when it shows up on another streaming service. Either way, I won't be contributing to the numbers soon.

Also, what's the most streamed HBO Max movie this year? Godzilla vs Kong did well if I remember correctly.

@bkmeijer - That has to be the most stupid decision ever; having to use a VPN to watch a movie outside the US.
Brasil is the biggest DC market in the world, were you a brasilian fan, and wanted to watch The Suicide Squad? use a VPN, or pirate the movie.

bkmeijer2 - 12/28/2021, 8:10 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I'm too lazy to get a VPN. There are like three movie the last year I couldn't watch without it. HBO just better hurry up with the international roll out.

TheHumanSpider2 - 12/28/2021, 8:19 AM
@bkmeijer - Exactly, so (especially in third world countries), people just decide to pirate the movies.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 12/28/2021, 8:27 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - yeah. If they just made it internationally available, I think a lot of people (like me) will get a subscription. Even if it is just to watch those three movies a year.

@bkmeijer - Oh it was for an official way to watch HBO Max. None of the pirate stuff.

@BobbyW - oh yeah I figured (that's why I appreciate it). Most stuff becomes available on the service of my tv provider after a few months, so I most of the time wait for that.

I might even just wait to watch Matrix once it's released in a box with the previous three movies to watch in one go.

Kinda sad tbh. But we will always have the original (And Reloaded, sorry that film ruled. Eff the haters) Ground breaking doesn't begin to describe the impact the Matrix had on action cinema. It definitely deserved better after all this time. Though I must say, seeing Neo and Trinity together again was kinda awesome. One of my favorite movie couples.

I be surprised if we get sequel not sure how it can be most pirated for people who own hbo

@dragon316 - Because the people who don't own HBO Max and didn't go to the cinema, obviously pirates it some other way. You're not very smart are you?

I’m upset I still watched this on hbo max. I would’ve been pissed had I gone to a theater and watched it.

Keanu Reeves isn’t hurting for money, and there’s no way he was wowed by the pitch so why did he do this?
Vision85
Vision85 - 12/28/2021, 9:16 AM
Lets be honest, Yuen Wo Ping was doing some heavy lifting in those movies. Without him, the action is sub par. Too many edits, the Hong Kong style is what made them stand out.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/28/2021, 9:37 AM
@Vision85 - Considering the budget ($200M), which clearly didnt went to VFX, I think he got paid a dirty ammount of money for this movie.

I thought Matrix Resurrections was a phenomenal movie. Fight me. Actually, don't.

It's a shame this movie didn't do better. But I have a feeling the Wachowski's are actually happy about that. I mean that one scene with Thomas Anderson and the business partner talking about The Matrix franchise (don't worry, no spoilers here) is evidence enough the Wachowski's didn't want to revisit this franchise. Now, at least where movies are concerned, they won't have to. At least not for a few years.

One thing I will say is as I was watching the movie I thought, "Why didn't they turn this into an HBOMax series instead?" The Matrix universe has SO much potential for continuing storylines. It has a rich and deep mythos and characters that I would LOVE to spend more time with. It doesn't even have to be a Neo/Trinity/Morpheus story. There are SO many OTHER characters that deserve further exploration. (I'm looking at you, Bugs!) I really do hope when WB revisits this property in the future they decide to go the series route. I would be all in on that.

Idk what the [frick] your hate boner for this movie is man, but it's pretty good. It isn't perfect no, and having Hugo Weaving as his business partner would've made it 10× better, but overall I liked a lot more than I disliked.

@Dredd97 - yep. It definitely took some huge risks for a Matrix movie too.

Agents have personal lives now? They live in cozy apartments where they shower and shave before heading out to take care of those pesky anomalies apparently…

This “movie” was total nonsense from start to finish…

There was a major opportunity for this movie to go in a different direction, but instead ended the way it ended. Which to me is wholly unnecessary unless they did it across multiple films. A series might have been better.
TheWinkler

I really enjoyed the hell out of this movie! Not a masterpiece, but in my opinion, way better than Reloaded/Revolutions. Felt much more contained like the first Matrix.

Seriously, WTF did they expect? Releasing on a digital platform not available outside internationally the day of cinema release is absolute [frick]ing stupidity. “Let’s give people access to a high quality copy of our movie so they can pirate it on day one! What?! No one went to see it at the cinema?! WTF!?”
