THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Flopping Means Sequels Or A Spinoff TV Series Are Now Unlikely To Follow

The Matrix Resurrections ended up being one of 2021's biggest box office flops, and it's now been confirmed that any rumblings of a sequel or spinoff TV series on HBO Max are, in fact, incorrect...

There appeared to be a lot of excitement for The Matrix Resurrections prior to its release. Trailers generated a lot of positive buzz on social media ("Look, Keanu Reeves has a rubber duck on his head!") and early reactions from critics were glowing. However, reviews themselves were mixed, and the movie from filmmaker Lana Wachowski ultimately flopped hard at the box office.

Spider-Man: No Way Home steamrolled this fourth instalment of The Matrix franchise, while a lowly B- CinemaScore served as a solid indication that moviegoers simply didn't like what they were seeing. An HBO Max release didn't help matters, of course, but that doesn't fully explain a lowly $106 million haul at the global box office...for a movie with a reported $190 million budget.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has cleared up a few recent rumours (including supposed plans for a TV series). "HBO Max insiders insist no series is in development," the trade reveals. "And movie sequels to the Warner Bros. reboot may prove glitchy as well. Sources tell THR that star Keanu Reeves does not have sequel options, and it’s unclear if director Lana Wachowski wants to make more."

While The Matrix Resurrections is one of the top five most viewed movies on HBO Max, that's clearly not enough for Warner Bros. to be able to justify making any follow-ups. Honestly, the mind boggles that an exec at the studio felt it was a good idea to give Wachowski nearly $200 million to make this movie.

"A wholly unnecessary epilogue to The Matrix trilogy, Resurrections retreads old ground, delivers mediocre action, and proves itself a tough pill to swallow despite a decent enough love story that, alone, isn't enough to justify revisiting this franchise. Time for a reboot," we said in our review.

On the plus side, Reeves donating 70% of his pay to cancer charities definitely goes some way towards justifying The Matrix Resurrections' existence!

Meh that movie wasn't a matrix movie, and anyone who says it was high brow on purpose is an idiot. It wasn't clever, there was no story, the action sucked and the music was atrocious! Especially the cover at the end. This movie doesn't exist, and there is no hidden meaning.. it's just shit

@bobevanz - Lol I remember some of the first reactions were so pretentious, calling it a "meditation on cinema."

Yea definitely feels like I'm meditating while watching this shit, because it's boring as [frick].

@bobevanz - I cringed so hard at that RATM cover during it’s the end titles *long sigh of disappointment*

@bobevanz - that was a colossal disappointment. I hate watched that movie. Didn’t go in like that but 20 minutes in I knew it was a certified dud. Everything special about the original film is nowhere in this. How they thought they could pull this off with subpar action scenes is baffling.
Side note: Every time I saw Niobe in her ridiculous makeup I thought to myself that Eff her for making Will Smith such a cuck

@bobevanz - Lets not talk about the original movie which is considered perfection, but we went from this

@bobevanz - I was watching it on a streaming site and was so bored. I feel sorry for the hundred people who wasted their money on this.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Reloaded had some really awesome fight scenes. Neo vs the Agents is one that's really overlooked but it's really well done.

@globaltravels - Really well done.
The big dude who plays Agent Johnson is a legend as a stunt cordinator, he works in the John Wicks movies.

The Matrix should continue as a video game. An MMO or something.

I watched it a bit earlier and you know what, I didn't think it was as bad as everyone made it to be.

I actually quite enjoyed the first half, save for a few attempts at being too meta. The second half starts dipping once the exiles show up.

But still, I didn't exactly hate it, it had some interesting new concepts. I do wish the story just ended with the third film though.

@Fares -

Everything you've said is actually what the critics who said it was bad stated. You're actually aligning with them.

Many agreed that the first act was good but the other two fell off, the meta moments were poor and overused and it should have ended with the 3rd but it had some good concepts. I think that's fair.

That's my assessment as well. Bad film with some good ideas.

Ehhhhh. This sequel wasn't really necessarily needed so I guess it makes sense that a sequel wouldn't come?

This movie feels like one of those tv shows that continues the story of a movie but doesn't have the original cast.

Those words don’t imply at all that the box office slump (majorly due to the HBO Max debut) is the reason for no follow-ups. Completely misleading headline from Josh, shocker

Kumkani

This film had some of the most lazy and uninspired fight scenes I've ever seen, and that's not something I should ever say about a Matrix movie, considering that this is the franchise that made Hong Kong style action and wire-fu mainstream in Hollywood.

The fact that Daniel Destin Cretton nailed this with Shang-Chi, having no prior action experience unlike Lana Wachowski and taking inspiration from the Matrix movies themselves, speaks volumes.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 1/8/2022, 12:27 PM
@Kumkani - how do you have Keanu, who’s absolutely crushing it on stunts with the John Wick films despite his age, just put his hands up and that’s it? This is [frick]ing Neo and his abilities became a punchline in the film.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/8/2022, 4:04 PM
@Kumkani - And is not that Keanu can pull the moves, they didnt make any interesting coreography, and the entire third act consisted on him doing jazz hands.

Good. Lana is probably thrilled she killed her own franchise so WB can no longer milk it. Unless all that literal scripted talk about studios forcing sequels was just pure coincidence lol

The movie wasn't that bad, and the odds were against it from the beginning

R Rated at Christmas time, going up against NWH, on HboMax streaming day 1. Omicron..

I keep saying it, but they should just go the Animatrix route. the best thing since the original, bring that back and expand it.

Honestly I think Lana wanted it to bomb. She's been fairly outspoken about never wanting to do another one until WB decided they were going ahead with or without her or her sister. This way the IP is almost certainly dead and they don't have to deal with that problem for another 20yrs when WB try to reboot it again.
