THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Reviews Point To A Compelling Love Story With Disappointing Action

The reviews are in for The Matrix Resurrections, but what are critics saying about the franchise's return? Well, while it boasts a compelling love story, how necessary this movie is seems hard to say...

The review embargo for The Matrix Resurrection has lifted, and it appears that this will be yet another Warner Bros. movie in 2021 that receives a mixed response from fans and critics alike. While many of the reviews are positive, it doesn't exactly sound like the follow-up fans have been waiting for. In this piece, we've rounded up some verdicts for you from a variety of sources.

We'll start with the trades. The Hollywood Reporter's review is mostly positive and concludes by noting, "there’s nothing here to inspire hope that, should Warners or whomever insist on more sequels, they’d be worth seeing." However, their critic adds that "I actually look forward to seeing this one a second time." Variety wasn't impressed and says most of the movie "could fairly be described as more of the same: more time- and gravity-defying action, more Goth-geek fashion pointers, more 'free your mind' mumbo-jumbo."

Forbes has similarly mixed feelings, describing The Matrix Resurrections as "a deeply personal romantic comedy" and adding that, "I wish it were a better (or less of an) action movie, but the scenes where folks talk to each other and detail the aftershocks of what came before are as fascinating as hoped." Entertainment Weekly awards the sequel a B+ and is similarly complimentary about the romantic side of things, promising "a do-over without a full share of wonderment, but still a lot of fun." USA Today gives a middling verdict, though, explaining that "The new 'Matrix' tries to reprogram a beloved piece of cinema. However, it’s quite a few fixes short of a full upgrade."

Empire awards the movie 3* and conclude their review with, "Resurrections suffers from an identity crisis, going from being supremely fun and knowing to weirdly pedestrian. It’s a slippery mish-mash— entertaining in big bursts but ultimately a little hollow." Total Film goes with one more star and enthuses, "Forget what you think you know...The Matrix Resurrections is a twisty metanarrative anchored by a love story for the ages."

IGN hated The Matrix Resurrections and its 4/10 score includes a brutal summary that cautions, "[This] is the kind of film that will go down in cult history because it is so laughably bad. Truthfully, I can’t even say it’s unenjoyable because I spent so much of its overly long runtime giggling over how jaw-droppingly misguided the majority of it is."

ComicBookMovie.com's own Mark Cassidy echoed those thoughts, saying: "The Matrix Resurrections is a disappointingly safe, surprisingly dull endeavour that squanders a fine cast and an opportunity to bring fans a worthy follow-up to the superb original...You'll wish you could go back and take the blue pill." You can read his full verdict by clicking here.

The overall consensus appears to be that this movie is heavy on nostalgia, boasts a great love story, but is a mostly unnecessary follow-up with disappointing action scenes. With Spider-Man: No Way Home likely to demolish this one in theaters, watching at home on HBO Max might be for the best.

@AmazingFILMporg - despite NWHs numbers, it did little to change the general publics overall weariness of public gathering events while Covid is still as active as it is. It's just unrealistic to champion this full embrace of the cinema experience... yet. I'm sure it will come to pass that cinemas become unhindered by a world wide pandemic and eventually recover, but only once the world ar large has returned to "normal". I understand we wanna make sure they don't go under in the meantime, but honestly, unless it's a big event film like NWH was, don't expect big box office numbers till the world is safe again.

Christmas time with the fam, homie. Think DUNE is going to be a must watch for us.

A couple of my boys do want to see this in a theater, so that's def not out of the question. I'd prefer to see it that way.

@tmp3

12 hour flight...haha holy shit man, good lucky with that. I have like a switch in my head where I can just pass out wherever I need to so usually not an issue for me.

Need to get into Station Eleven on HBO. Hearing pretty amazing things about it on some of the pods I listen to.

We're watching Elves (1989), Elves (2018), and the annual Star Wars Life Day Holiday Special. We go in the opposite quality direction as your clan.

That sounds good though.

I hate when all a movie has to offer is action scenes without and story worth telling

In fairness it was the love story that made the original so good. Said nobody.

I’ll be watching it, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be enjoying it.

Big fan of the original trilogy, even if it wasn’t perfect.

Def looking forward to it.

HBOMAX for the win!

Keanu Reeves worst performance ever, and due to the fact that Keanu is already old, he spent his time stopping bullets and throwing kamehamehas

It’s so funny I’m hearing not enough action too much talking but then I hear the talking is awesome. I think this is a challenging film she didn’t set out to just make Matrix 4. I already spoiled the plot and ending and I LOVE what they do in paper at least. I think I’m gonna like it better than the two sequels

Was the romance between Neo and Trinity even that compelling back in the previous movies? Some of these reviews are praising so it caught my attention a bit.

I never was a fan of these flicks, so I'm "biased" to begin with, but all the usual warning signs were there with this one.
A good chunk of the original cast did not return.
One the directors did not return.
Different producer, writers etc.
Released on a Wednesday and a very short window from the review embargo being lifted and release.

These are all usually big warning signs that the studio knows they have a turkey on their hands, but are trying to maximize profits before the bad to mediocre word of mouth gets out.

Again, I was never a fan of the originals, but yet again, we see Hollywood just beating an old property to death rather than being creative and coming up with something original for once.
