THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Star Keanu Reeves Is "In" For Fifth Movie, But Doesn't Think It'll Happen

The Matrix Resurrections star Keanu Reeves has commented on the possibility of returning for a fifth movie, and while he sounds game, he doesn't think director Lana Wachowski would have much interest.

The Matrix Revolutions served as a pretty definitive ending to the original trilogy, and although Resurrections resets the clock (how successfully is open for debate) and leaves room for the story to continue, it doesn't sound like any plans are currently in place for a fifth movie.

Director Lana Wachowski has already made it clear that she has no interest in helming a new trilogy, and star Keanu Reeves has now weighed in on the prospect of reprising the role of Thomas Anderson/Neo again.

"I don’t believe so," the John Wick star tells Empire Magazine when asked if The Matrix 5 is going to happen. "If I had to cast a ballot- No, not a ballot, a vote. I would say that Lana would not do another Matrix."

However, in the unlikely event that the filmmaker could be persuaded, Reeves makes it clear that "he's in."

Honestly, even if Wachowski and the entire cast did want to make a follow-up, Resurrections' lacklustre performance at the box office has probably ensured that the door is firmly closed on the possibility of this franchise going any further.

I respect the new Matrix more than I like it. My opinions pretty much are identical to Mike from Red Letter Media's opinions.

I don't love or hate it. I see what Lana went for, it was a [frick] you to the film industry currently. Very punk rock.

@ElricReturns - Was it really though? It might have been if she'd actually followed up the self-aware, meta first act with an original or innovative story...but she just remade the first Matrix with worse action.

@ElricReturns - I mean, it's not much of an f u to the film industry when it's doing exactly what it's criticizing them for doing.

@RorMachine - but that was the point. Lol or we who appreciate it think it is. Idk, it's hard to explain but they do a great job in the video. It's neither praised nor hated. It's just kinda this self aware Grelmins 2 kinda oddity.

@Origame - but u think that was the while point. The film is a joke. I mean, were not hailing it as a masterpiece of any kind. More of a statement. I mean the RLM guys are clowning on the film most of the review, it's not like some triumph. It's interesting to pick apart and analyze, it's a curiosity of a film more than anything lol

@ElricReturns - I think it will it age well.

It was alot better than revolutions' story, but was severely lacking in action. Its not like Keanu can't still kick ass, like he's been doing in John Wick, though I guess it's more gun play there than fist to cuffs we know the Matrix for.

There's more to love than to hate.

@ElricReturns - yeah they definitely had my thoughts to a T. It's a fascinating movie, and I love the ingenuity, and meta and some really interesting concepts, but yeah it's a mess

@ElricReturns - so the whole point is to criticize the notion of continuing a franchise that had its intended ending, while also being a continuation of a franchise that had its intended ending? Not only is that massively hypocritical, it's also not original (just look at jurassic world).
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 2:53 PM
@Origame - man, you're so close. That's the experiment of what this movie is. They were gonna make it with or without Lana, so she half assed the film and made it basically satire of itself, they literally bluntly tell the audience why this movie exists, and shouldn't exist, but is being forced to exist! So instead of letting this sequel become a Jurassic World or a The Force Awakens or a Total Recall, Lana like a savage took over her own franchise like a pirate, turned the ship around and crashed it back into the docks. That's bad ass.

If you can't see the self sabatoge angle of this entry, you won't get why it's cool. Beyond that, I don't know how else to explain it to you. Maybe it's just not the film for you.

@ElricReturns - Problem is, it's not really punk or a [frick] you to WB when they're obviously in on the "joke". Also, it's one thing to be self-aware and mock the industry and tropes, which is fine, but then you proceed to do the very things you mocked as lame and unoriginal...sorry, you're just as guilty.

And the whole "bad on purpose" excuse is one of the worst excuses I've ever heard. Bad on purpose is still bad imo.

This flick isn't the worst movie ever, but it's bad, and like most attempts to breathe life into a dead "franchise", it literally has no reason to exist.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 3:45 PM
@Feralwookiee - well the movie agrees with you, Lana agrees it has no reason to exist, that was her point. WB was going to make this a blatant cash grab, a product manufactured for profit and no heart or artistic direction aside from half ass attempts at a plot only ment to manufacture nostalgia (:cough: Spiderman No Way Home :cough: highest grossing cash nostalgia cash grab of 2021 :cough: 14th highest grossing movie all time :cough:) with or without Lana. She didn't have a say, that was happening anyway. She saw an opportunity to make a statement out of it. That's dope.

You are angry at the studios bullshit at placing that on Lana and the creative. 2 different entities. Lana took the reigns and turned their blatant cash grab into, not only a parody of the film industry, but she also tanked the film and probably ended or limited WBs chances to use their creation to print money.

Origame - 1/1/2022, 3:49 PM
@ElricReturns - ...you think it was a parody of itself on purpose? I think you're giving Lana too much credit.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 3:53 PM
@Origame - I mean it literally was. It literally parodied itself, and figuratively. The whole thing was self aware and also self depricating.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 3:59 PM
@Origame - Feel like you're judging the meta elements of this movie as a flavor, rather than the entire movies motive. You're expecting a sound film with a well thought out story and inventive action that elevates this franchise and capitalizes on its tremendous potential..... thats not what this movie EVER was gonna be.

This movie was forced into existence because MONEY, and the only reason Lana filmed what she film was very obviously to make a statement to WB and reboot culture as a whole.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 1/1/2022, 4:01 PM
@ElricReturns - Please don't project or put words in my mouth. I'm not angry about anything. As I wrote earlier, I was never even a fan of the originals, so I have no emotional attachment to this franchise at all. It's just my opinion.

The excuse of "studio X was going to make and taint my creation anyway, so I might as well destroy it on purpose myself" is laughably moronic imo. It just feels similar to a psycho who says "if I can't have you, no one else will!" Lol

Wouldn't the smarter and classier thing for the director to have done is refuse to make any movie at all and when WB made a "Matrix" movie without her, she comes out and says "I have nothing to do with this movie and it does not reflect my creative vision for the Matrix or the franchise. F**k WB."

THAT would actually be punk.

Instead, she tried to have her cake and eat it too, while shitting on the studio, the franchise, and the fans who made her millions with an "intentionally bad" movie because supposedly WB was gonna go on without her? Seems more like a spoiled douchebag move to me more than anything.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 4:04 PM
@Feralwookiee - well, I respect your opinions. I disagree, but that just the nature of things. We're allowed to view things differently.

I wouldn't go around calling artists a douchebag because I disagree with what they make, but thats me.

I definitely don't love this film, and im not so passionate that I feel the need to defend it beyond expressing the opinions I've already shared.

So at this junction, I wish you well and a happy new year.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 1/1/2022, 4:35 PM
@ElricReturns - I wouldn't consider either of the Wachowski's "artists", but like I said, imo intentionally shitting on what made you a millionare is a douchebag move. I never called Wachowski a douchebag as I obviously don't know her personally.

As far as new years; time is just a man made construct to control production. The date changing on a calendar means nothing. Expect more of the same.
Origame
Origame - 1/1/2022, 4:43 PM
@ElricReturns - 1) so you're really saying a well known one hit wonder film maker made this film intentionally bad? Come on. Have you seen speed racer or Jupiter ascending? That's what they make when actually trying to do good.

2) let's say hypothetically you're right. That's a terrible way to handle it. So in order to criticize wb for making a forced continuation that ruins the franchise, she makes a forced continuation of the franchise that ruins the franchise. And yeah, another movie would've been made regardless. But at least there could've been a chance of it being at least decent or fun to watch.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 1/1/2022, 4:57 PM
@Origame - but literally everything you just said is colored by your opinion. My opinion is being fair, it was way above decent and was fun to watch. It wasn't what I wanted or expected either. But you can't say it was a bad film or not fun to watch for everyone, that's not true.
Origame
Origame - 1/1/2022, 5:18 PM
@ElricReturns - her doing what she's criticizing the studio for doing while doing herself is not an opinion. It's fact. It's also a fact that that is hypocritical. And sure, I guess it's an opinion that I don't like it. But so what?
Origame
Origame - 1/1/2022, 5:21 PM
@Jstreet - ...are you seriously correcting us for using the pronoun Lana prefers? Well I'm gonna continue to respect what she wants to call herself. You want to call her "him" and "he", then fine. But telling us to do so? Well you can f@#$ off.

Yeah, I’d dig another Superman with Cavill but I think it’s pretty clear they’re going to do what they’re doing with Superman with Batman. At least trying a new standalone rake.
