Star Trek is headed back to the small screen (kinda...)! Based on a story first broken by THR (and then swiftly backed up by an official statement), a new TV series about the popular space-set property is in the works at CBS. The show will premiere on CBS, ahead of its full release on their digital subscription/VOD platform, CBS All Access. Additionally, all subsequent episodes will be exclusively available via this streaming service (which it's specifically being developed for).

This marks CBS All Access' first original series (in the vein of similar platforms like Netflix & Amazon Prime). Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman is currently developing the series, and will also executive produce. Per THR's original report, he is currently searching for a head writer. The show will not be a continuation of the current film series, but rather a separate TV feature, featuring all-new characters - according to the official release:

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Growing up I didn't really watch Star Trek, only occasionally when nothing else was on, probably why I enjoyed both the movies compared to fans of the TV show.

Good news about the series though, looking forward to it.

I predicted a while back that the next Star Trek show would be through a streaming site. It's kinda if weird this that they are having it premiere on CBS. I mean it makes sense I guess. But I just feel like a lot of casual fans are going to be disappointed when they like the first episode and then find out that they have to pay to see the rest of it. I kind of hate the idea but at least we're getting a new series.

Awesome! I'm curious though as to whether it's in the rebooted universe, or the old one. I will probably watch it either way, but I'd rather it be in the original timeline.

So will the show actually air on CBS, or just the first episode? From this article, I can't tell if all future episodes will only be on the streaming service, or will just be available on there as an alternative for people to watch.

@TyrantBoss, it will either take place in the original continuity or an entirely new one. Paramount owns the rights to the film franchise, while CBS owns the rights to the TV franchise. Unless Paramount is involved with this series, and I don't see any mention of them, CBS can't make a show using their concepts and continuity.

Also, it explicitly says it's not connected to the films at the bottom of the source article.

Mixed feelings. But, I'll hold off judgement until I hear more.

Does Star Trek belong on TV? Yes, absolutely. Like X-Files, Star Trek always translated better on TV, as opposed to the movies. That's where it was born, and that's where it's meant to be.

Is Kurtzman the right man for the job? Not so sure. I need to hear more.

Let's keep in mind that Kurtzman will be developing the series, not writing or running it. While his strengths don't lie in writing, they do in developing and producing shows. Notable examples include Fringe and Sleepy Hollow. He has very good ideas. I'm actually looking forward to what he comes up with for this show, just keep him out of the writer's room.

I'm pretty sure "in development" means let's wait and see how next year's movie does at the box office. If it bombs, don't expect this to actually go into production.

Kurtzman isn't writing the show. And him and Orci don't work together anymore if I remember correctly.

You people [frick]ing whine too much. Kurtzman gave us both Alias and Fringe. I wouldn't be worried at all.

@gulducati, the success or failure of the movie really has nothing to do with anything. These are two separate studios making two separate Star Trek projects.
