Benedict Cumberbatch Defends J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 'Khan' Secrecy

Yesterday, Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams talked about why he tried so hard to keep the fact that 'John Harrison' was in fact 'Khan' a secret, and now Benedict Cumberbatch has spoken out in defence of the filmmaker's decision. Hit the jump to check it out!

Unfortunately, some people were determined to spoil the true identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's 'John Harrison' before the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, robbing the big reveal in the movie of the impact it should have had. Yesterday, director J.J. Abrams (who is currently hard at work on Star Wars Episode VII pre-production) said that he actually regretted the decision in hindsight, but The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Sherlock star who played the villain has now spoken out in his defence. Everyone wants everything spoiled for them nowadays. I miss going to the movies completely lost of what might happen. I'm glad they kept this a secret. I can't say I was surprised but it was still a cool twist.

Sorry, I love Cumberbatch, and liked him as the villain in this, but all in all this whole thing was just stupid. :(

STID villain would've either needed to be a new, interesting character in his own right, or -if they really wanted to make him Khan- actually needed to look anything like the character from the original timeline.

I dont like Cumberpatch and i dont get what the fuss is about with this actor but for once i agree with him.

I'm glad J.J. Abrahams kept his character in secrecy. These days people want everything spoiled for them when it comes to tv shows and films.

Cumberpatch's portrayal of Khan was far better than the original.

Villains are getting pretty poor in this day and age.

Bane, Mandarin and Khan for example are in these films in name only

As someone that Never watched Star Trek, couldn't stand Kirk, Picard, an whoever else was on the TV shows and terrible movies...

A friend of mine made me watch the reboo when it came out, and I loved it. Looking back and noticing the "Thor" cameo at the beginning, lol. It was exciting, wel acted, and pure fun. Exactly what a Sci-Fi movie should be.

Star Trek into Darkness was easily my favorite non-CBM this year, and ranks above IM3 and Thor 2 in enjoyability (although I loved both of them). And me being a serious Star Trek hater, I still knew who Khan was, the character was a legend in Star Trek lore, and known outside of Trekkieland because of the actor that portrayed him.

Cumberbatch, in my opinion, was by far the best villain of 2013, and is quickly becoming a fancast favorite for ALL CBM's. He was incredible in STID, terrifying, ruthless, brilliant... Literally gave me chills more than once. A superb piece of thespianism. I wish we had more villains like him in CBM's, would be a whole lot better than Whiplash and Red Hugo.

I don't have a problem with Cumberbatch's character. Not sure why they named him 'Khan,' though. I'm not an old school Trekkie or anything, but the two aren't very similar at all, even beyond the race.

I love ya brother, you got the Marvel love in ya, but The Dark Knight will likely be the most talked about CBM ever, no one in Iron Man 3 gave the greatest performance ever captured on screen.

Absolutely loved Iron Man 3 though.

He should play Brainiac in the Man of Steel movie. If they should ever use the villain in the movie.

Being a person who has only watched the Star Trek films, I can easily say Into Darkness is so far the best. Star Trek The Motion Picture was pointless and a bore, Star Trek II was great fun, Star Trek III was... decent. IV-VI can go burn for all I care. TNG films were all crap. The reboot was great, and Into Darkness left the biggest impact on me. Striking visuals, interesting takes on past characters, and having Khan be as much of a threat as he was in Star Trek II.

At least they tried to make Ricardo Montalban look Asian. They didn't even bother with Cumberbatch.

Im not sold on the new Trek movies so far. They need to step their game for the next movie.

XD I remember nolanites trying to spoil IM3 for everyone, but it back fired on their dumbasses. lol All their efforts only created more interest. The numbers don't lie. Black straight up bitchslapped nolan's generic henchman crap... and yes Iron Man 3 will remain the most talked about CBM of all time.
