"It's All New And Fresh"; Justin Lin On Taking Over From JJ Abrams To Direct STAR TREK 3

James Wan's isn't the only Fast & Furious director set to take over the reins of another big franchise. Fast Five's Justin Lin recently sat down to talk about how he got the Star Trek 3 director's gig - and how he planned to build on J.J. Abrams' films. Read on for more!

Having steered the Fast & Furious franchise to new critical heights and financial success over the years, director Justin Lin will next helm the third installment in Paramount's Star Trek series next year. He steps into JJ Abrams' shoes, whose commitment to Star Wars: The Force Awakens prevented him from directing the sci-fi sequel. While speaking to Deadline, Lin explained how his predecessor encouraged him to sign on for the project in the first place:

“I was in the last week shooting True Detective when JJ Abrams called last December.  He asked me, do you like Star Trek? If you do, you should take this, be bold, and just go for it. I thought about how much a part of my life Star Trek was... All my friends were Star Wars kids but I didn’t go to the movies, so I was the Star Trek kid. Thinking about this, it became a very personal and very emotional decision.”

While Lin expressed his admiration for Abrams, he also claimed that his take on the beloved franchise would still differ from JJ's movies in several different ways:

“As great as JJ’s films were, there’s still a lot to be mined from these characters. They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate.”

According to Deadline, Lin remained tight-lipped about the script (co-written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung), but did promise the plot wouldn't be borrowed from classic Trek episodes the way Star Trek Into Darkness was. "It's all new and fresh", Lin maintained, "The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species.”

What are your thoughts on this new direction? Are you excited to see fresh Star Trek stories and characters on the big screen, or would you rather the movies pay homage to what came before them. Star Trek 3 (rumored to be titled 'Star Trek Beyond') will boldly go where no one has gone before on 8 July, 2016. Are you excited?

I have faith in Lin. I never watched Star Trek or Next Generation, not from my time but I like the movies. Lin reinvented the Fast franchise and made to pretty good action packed films with alright scripts. Imagine what he can do with a great script.

Weirdly enough, these comments make me feel more optimistic about it than if JJ was still involved.

Awesome, hope they capture the feel of the original series. I liked the first two, but the loss of exploration is something they've been missing.

@DrKinsolving She kicked ALL the ass in Kingsman! I'm sure she'll knock her Star Trek role out of the park, too.

True Detective is great, although I feel like a major reason for that is the writer/creator. Can't recall his name right now.
I'm feeling optimistic about this.

Definitely, she's cool man. I really hope that Marvel/Netflix is considering her for Elektra too, I wrote an article about it, haha. I think she could own that role.

i saw Kingsman couple of days ago and i really can't understand how come you guys are so sure Sofia could play Electra. Sure, she can kick but her performance in Kingsmen was rather ... look. She was there just to kick and look good. The movie did not allow her to show much of her acting skills.

@TandAFan

I can understand that, I just want her to audition for Elektra more than anything. I trust the casting department on Daredevil especially after how good season 2 was.... If they approve then I'm sure her acting is up to par because as far as the action goes she is definitely top notch

It sucks being a Trekkie. Star Wars fans have cool shit like "Han Shot First!"

What do we have? "Tellarites Have Three Fingers!"? GTFO!

"Let the force be with you..."

What do we have? "I can't change the laws of physics! I've got to have 30 minutes!"

I just want a Picard cameo. I know he's way in the future, but this franchise isn't exactly setting records when it comes to stickin to source material (that's kind of the point, right?). Anyways, just a bald kid at the academy or something. Hell, give me a Patrick Stewart cameo. I don't care.
