J.J. Abrams Endorses Rupert Wyatt For STAR TREK 3; Hints At Plot

It sounds like we'll definitely be getting a new director for the third Star Trek movie..but will it be the rumored Rupert Wyatt? Abrams says no director has been signed yet, but he does sound very positive about the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes helmer..

Recently Rupert Wyatt was rumored to be the frontrunner to take over from J.J. Abrams on Star Trek 3, and although Abrams doesn't confirm that's the case, in the following video interview with Hitfix he does have some nice things to say about him.

Abrams says that there's no director in place yet, though I think we can pretty much rule out him taking the helm himself once more ("I plan to be involved in the story and producing the film and I feel very blessed to be involved at all.") So what about Wyatt? "I know Rupert and he's incredibly talented," he says, "and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go." Abrams says it's too early to discuss details, but that at the end of Into darkness we found the crew about to start their 5 year mission, so that's likely where we'd pick up. "There have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next," he teases.

It'll be interesting to see what Wyatt does with Star Trek. I'm glad JJ is moving on with Star Wars. I loved his Star Trek movies, but his style fits Star Wars more than it does Trek.

If that's the same dude who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, sounds good to me!

Alfonso Cuaron. Look what he did for Harry Potter after two shit installments. Besides being a brilliant director, he's obviously suited for shooting sci-fi given CHILDREN OF MEN, and the fantastic early reviews GRAVITY is getting. My vote is for Alfonso--though Rupert would be cool too.

Say what you will about Into Darkness, but the next film HAS to involve the Klingons on a larger scale. I mean after Starfleet officers & Khan, both infiltrated Q'nos(or Kronos in JJ's universe) & killed an entire Klingon crew, they has to some sort of backlash from those actions against the Federation. I mean Admiral Marcus in the film said it himself the war with the Klingons is already coming, they wouldn't need much of a push to declare war on the federation, after those actions on Q'nos.

This Grif dude needs a life. As for Wyatt, that would be great. A fresh eye would be welcome and as much as I liked STID I want a more original story.

I like Abrams, too bad he's not doing the third one. The fact of the matter is that Abrams took a dying franchise and gave new life to it. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I strongly disagree with anyone who thinks that the last two Trek movies sucked. If anything, they've brought new fans to the franchise.

They're obviously going to have The Borg as the villains. They're the biggest villains throughout the entire franchise, the only series that didn't have The Borg was the original.

I thought the last two films were 'okay' as far as sci-fi action flicks go. Thing is, Star Trek was never about how much action can you cram into two hours. It's always been more drama than action or comedy.

In my opinion, Abram's films are missing that 'human element' that we've come to expect. There's no substance to the last two films. Just stories riddled with plot holes that sell box office tickets. Yeah, the crew is there and they're saving the universe like they've always done in Roddenberry's world, but I just can't bring myself to care for these characters the way I used to.

A lot of people have been saying Abrams made Trek relevant again. I'm no extreme fanatic, but I have to agree with those who say that he did dumb it down. The franchise is more relevant to a crowd that watches films with shiny vampires. And just because they've been the highest grossing films in the franchise does not make them the better of the series. That's just my take.

I guess Rupert Wyatt could be a good choice. I've only seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes, so I really don't have much to go off of.

As disappointed as I am about JJ leaving Star Trek (I pretty much have him to thank for really getting me into the franchise), I will always prioritize Star Wars over Trek. So I'd rather have a bad Trek movie and a great Star Wars film than the other way around.

I love the Star Trek movies, warts and all. However, I sometimes wonder how these films would work without the existence of the original and TNG tv series. I guess we'll never know.

A common enemy will force the Klingons and Federation to stop fighting and grudgingly work together. Otherwise, tribbles.
