New Details On William Shatner's Role In STAR TREK 3; Will He Meet Chris Pine's 'Captain Kirk'?

William Shatner recently confirmed that he will reprise the role which made him famous in Star Trek 3, and now a new report sheds some light on what both his and Leonard Nimoy's roles will entail. It's a lot different to what you might expect, but they WILL interact with some familiar faces...

As Star Trek 3 is being released to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary, the fact that they're finally bringing in William Shatner for a cameo appearance feels wholly appropriate. The actor has confirmed that he's been contacted by J.J. Abrams (who is too busy working on Star Wars Episode VII to helm this movie) and now Badass Digest have some very interesting details about how he'll factor into the Star Trek Into Darkness follow-up. The older Kirk will apparently meet the Chris Pine version and both versions of Spock - Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy - will also be present. However, they reportedly won't the alternate timeline versions we've caught a glimpse of thanks to the events of the 2009 reboot. Instead, they will be playing older versions of THESE current iterations. How that will come to pass remains to be seen, but it should be interesting.

Come on. What's the [frick]ing point then?

If you want Shatner back, make him play the actual James T. Kirk!

I'm nervous about Star Trek 3 and trying to get Shatner seems real desperate

Not sure what's going on with this movie but I'm hoping it's good.

I think there's a lot of potential here. I like the idea of them being the future versions of Pine and Quinto. There's a really cool plot to be made here. Maybe involving a villain who tries to attack the crew in the future and past. Sort of like DOFP with a more central villain.

Wait, I just saw Shatner confirmed he was asked to come back. I never saw him say he WAS coming back.

Since when does time travel have to do with space travel? It would be cooler to have Picard make an appearance than Old Kirk.

Right so basically reboot-wise:

Star Trek: Spock meets himself

Star Trek: into darkness - Kirk pinches Spocks key moment from Wrath of Khan (really JJ? - REALLY? *yeesh* )

Star Trek III: Kirk meets himself.

Too bad DeForest Kelly passed years ago. It would have been epic with his McCoy and Karl Urban's to meet.

I can't wait to see this movie.

So now we have three Spocks?

No...no. That's too many.

That is the most confusing thing I've ever read.

I don't see the logic behind the choice to create an alternate timeline on one hand and make an effort to connect to past with the other hand.

Maybe it'll be like the final TNG episode and jump between three different times to solve one problem.

How about not bringing in William's Kirk instead.

You guys realize this is the only way that makes sense right? Kirk is dead in the main timeline, an older version can only exist in this alternate timeline. Im excited!

I'm not a fan of them revisiting time travel yet again and yet with it being the 50th Anniversary, I'm willing to give it a pass cause ... well crap, it's the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek. Shatner NEEDS to be there! And however you can get him in; that's what you do. And bring in as many Trek characters wherever you can, however you can. Just ... just noone from Voyager. Yes, even 7 of 9; especially 7 of 9.

Frankly I think there should be a TV or Netflix miniseries that leads into the movie. Something dammit. Or on it's own. Whatever. But while I'm expecting big things from Trek in 2016, somehow I think I'm not going to much else besides the third movie ... directed by Bob Orci...

I like that idea. That way they don't have to try and explain away Generations. In this timeline Kirk never died.
