STAR TREK 3 Finally Beams Up A New Director Following Roberto Orci's Departure

Despite the fact that Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was recently named as a frontrunner, Paramount Pictures have finally found a director for Star Trek 3. You could say this filmmaker was Bourne for the job as he races into outer space. Figured out who it is yet?

Deadline reveals that Paramount Pictures have chosen Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3. J.J. Abrams is too busy finishing Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens to return to the director's chair in time for the threequel's 2016 release (the franchise's 50th anniversary), and while it appeared as if writer Roberto Orci would take over, he recently parted ways with the project for pretty murky sounding reasons! Regardless, the studio have decided that the Fast & Furious director is the right man for the job, something which is no great surprise after his three films in that series earned over $1.7 billion! Though he's shooting the first two episodes of True Detective's second season, Lin has a gap in his schedule after Universal delayed his Bourne Legacy sequel in order to focus on Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon's actual Bourne movie. It's not clear what his Star Trek 3 deal means for those reports about him helming a multi-part Fast & Furious finale. Thoughts?

I've never liked Star Trek, so I don't care, but J.J. Abrams to Justin Lin is still an extremely hilarious downgrade.

Kind of wish it had been Rupert Wyatt, but after Duncan Jones pulled out Lin was my next choice.

I dont think any director can salvage the trek franchise and rebrand it into what its supposed to be about instead of this militariestic 21st century nonsense.

Why is everyone so angry at Lin? Fast Five and Fast Six are awesome films that emphasize cast chemistry and excellent action set pieces...which is what the Abrams films are.

So why the anger?

@Ruhail

Yeah, unfortunately this announcement tells me Trek in theaters is dead. Paramount doesn't care.

@aknightinarkham

If you hate the Abrams films, why in the heck would you expect this one to be any different? The Abrams films are what new Star Trek will be in the theaters. Accept that. If you want to watch original Trek there are tons of older episodes out there for you.

I just hope they don't try to copy Guardians. That tone wouldn't work well with Star Trek.

@thewonderer

Because we're coming up on the 50th anniversary of Trek. We were hoping someone could save it. And I think someone like Wyatt or Wright could have.
