STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Screenwriter Has Meltdown, Tells Trekkies To "F*ck Off!"

Bob Orci, who co-wrote Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) drop by the website, TrekMovie.com, to respond to an editorial, "Star Trek is broken – Here are ideas on how to fix it," written by Joseph Dickerson.

A large portion of Star Trek fans have begun to express their displeasure with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. Just last month, fans attending the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention voted it the worst in the franchise, while a gathering of Trekkies at a Seattle convention only ranked it 6th best.

Last week, Joseph Dickerson of TrekMovie.com posted an editorial entitled: “Star Trek is broken—Here are ideas on how to fix it,” which focused on some of the major complaints that Trekkies have had with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek universe, and especially the last film, Star Trek Into Darkness. This didn't sit well with Roberto "Bob" Orci, who was a co-writer of the past two Star Trek films. He added his two cents in the comment section, which you can read below.

I think the article above is akin to a child acting out against his parents. Makes it tough for some to listen, but since I am a loving parent, I read these comments without anger or resentment, no matter how misguided.

Having said that, two biggest Star Treks in a row with best reviews is hardly a description of “broken.” And frankly, your tone and attidude make it hard for me to listen to what might otherwise be decent notions to pursue in the future. Sorry, Joseph. As I love to say, there is a reason why I get to write the movies, and you don’t.

Respect all opinions, always, nonetheless.

312. boborci - September 2, 2013

308. Ahmed, I wish you knew what you were talking about. I listened more than any other person behind the Trek franchise has EVER listened. And guess what? Glad I did becuase it lead to 2 biggest Trek’s ever.

You think action and thinking are mutually exclusive. Ok, then. Pitch me Into Darkness. Pitch me the plot, and let’s comapre it to other pitches. Go ahead. Let’s see if you actually understood the movie. Tell me what happened?

318. boborci - September 2, 2013

312 Shitty Dodge. STID has infinetly more social commentary than Raiders in every Universe, and I say that with Harrison Ford being a friend. You lose credibility big time when you don’t honestly engage with the [frick]ING WRITER OF THE MOVIE ASKING YOU AN HONEST QUESTION. You prove the cliche of shitty fans. And rude in the process. So, as Simon Pegg would say: F*CK OFF!

398. boborci - September 2, 2013

don’ take me too seriously. if you’ve been on this board for the lar 5 years (as I have beeb) you know that twice a year I explode at the morons. today, there seemed to be a congregation, so it seemed like a good time.

you are the most listened to fans ever. That doesn’t mean you will get is to do what you want. just means what I said: I listened. Then we decided, having heard as many opinions as possible. To paraphrase of one of my great and beloved heroes, George W. Bush, “we’re the deciders….

1437. boborci - September 7, 2013

Joseph, Wanted to make something clear in the middle of this moment. I hold nothing against you. I have loved Trekmovie from day one, and your article does not change that. I respect the site even more for that. And I hope some remember that out of the thousands (literally) of valuable interactions I’ve had here with great Trekkieas, my inelegence represents less than one percent of my interactions.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was directed by J.J. Abrams ("Super 8"), from a screenplay written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoë Saldana, and Anton Yelchin. Joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

Classic. He was joking about that Bush comment, though, right? Right..? Especially considering the themes of STID. He must've been kidding. You just never know, these days.

Ok just because you wrote a good film (Into Darkness) which was really a remake of the greatest Star Trek film (Wrath of Khan) doesn't make you a great writer. It just showed you saw Wrath of Khan.

Lets see something new, something original. I like ID but I've seen in before and that's why Trekkies don't like it. They have seen Wrath of Khan so many times, you don't need to remake it. It would be like if you remade Empire Strikes Back. Wrath of Khan is a perfect film. You can't remake a film that is already perfect.

That's why fans are pissed. Instead of doing something new, you just did the most famous Star Trek movie and updated it.

The film had lots of nice CGI, action and.....nothing else. Rather disappointing after the great 2009 reboot.

Into Darkness was my favourite geek movie of the year and the only one that didn't disappoint. Only the Trekkies who will hate anything and everything that isn't prime continuity are saying this, shame that its a whole lot of the Trekkie community.

Star Wars & Star Trek are different than comic book movies.

With Star Wars & ST, you want something new and refreshing. Their is no source material to go on. Yes their are books and stuff but still you can be original in these films. Add a new villain? Why not?

ID has about the same problems with TASM except its not as shitty. TASM was a reboot that didnt do anything new. We saw Peter in high school in the first, we saw him get his powers, we saw him stand up to Flash and so much other things. TASM sucked because it was a story that didnt need to be retold. We didnt need Spider-Man's origin again. Spidey's origin can be kept in 5 words: bite by a radioactive spider. You didnt need to start from being after a film 10 years ago started from Spidey's beginning that is still remembered in the back of people's minds and remember it. Hell TIH came out 5 years Hulk and they knew not to retell the origin. Batman Begins was great because Batman's origin hasn't been told. Batman existed in Batman. Burton summed it up well; parents where killed by criminals in front of him. That's all you need to know why he's Batman. Man of Steel was ok because we needed a new Superman series away from the one done 35 years earlier. It's ok after that long.

Wrath of Khan is to Star Trek what ESB is to Star Wars or what The Dark Knight is to Batman movies. You can't retell it because its the best. Now but TDK I don't mean don't use Joker, just don't use the same story.

I like ID. Was good. Better than TASM as I used for example.

Note to screenwriter: If you think these movies' box office success has much to do with your screenplays, you're deluded. Try writing a screenplay for something other than a franchise film and let's see how well it does. Oh, wait. You wrote "Cowboys & Aliens."

The Trekkies still have their panties in a bunch because they never bought into JJ Abram's interpretation of the Star Trek universe. He's said from the beginning that his Trek movies are aimed beyond the hard core fan and at the general audience, and the box office performance of both movie has more than vindicated that approach.

Overall, Trekkies are a microcosm of geekdom everything that's wrong with geekdom, and why we are our own worst enemies.

Or, the Trekkies can get their wish and we can have more "Undiscovered Country" and "Nemesis".

Keep in mind, as soon as the 2009 Star Trek had its credits roll about 75% of the Trek nation asked for Khan in a sequel. You guys asked, he delivered- quite well in my opinion. So i'm with Bob and Peqq, don't be so whiney.

Great movie. Looks like every site has it's share of joyless asses who think they are saying something just because they can criticize. My lease favorites are the ones who just parrot what they have read. Dutch angles in Thor for instance. Yes, like you really are such a connoisseur of film you knew what a "dutch angle" was. Please. Your just an ass who read a negative review of someone who did.

@marvel72. I think most people who are fans of Star Trek, but aren't the hardcore Trekkie, probably enjoyed the film. At least that's the impression I get anecdotally.

Star Trek Into Darkness was a bad, dumb, but well shot and well acted movie. The fact is that the writers reallllllly dropped the ball, deal with it.

Here is 40 minutes of Red Letter Media nailing EXACTLY what was wrong with the movie. It's well made, but the writers had sh*t for brains.

Create a brand new story for movie 3 to shut them up.... Also if Spock doesn't want to come back, replace him with a character from one of the other series... Like ?Warf? the Kligon dude.

It's really a good thing Abrams left Star Trek for Star Wars. Because even though Star Wars fans don't exactly has the reputation for being a rational group, they still know the STID isn't close to being the worst Star Trek movie ever.

Heck, anybody who has seen "The Voyage home" should know that.

I love both recent movies. Interesting storylines. Good acting. Amazing special effects. I'm not bloody complaining... why do people keep comparing to grandpa Khan to this young powerful Khan, I just don't get it, I really don't....
Anyways, I just can't wait for the next one!!!
