STAR TREK TV Series Gets HANNIBAL's Bryan Fuller As Co-Creator And Showrunner

And with that, this show just got interesting. After 15 years, Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Dead Like Me) will return to a franchise he loves dearly as showrunner and co-creator of CBS's new Star Trek series.

Before he brought us the likes of Hannibal, Bryan Fuller cut his teeth as a writer on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager - and now he's returning to boldly steer the new CBS Trek series where no man has gone before. At least, we hope so.

Fuller was also recently announced as showrunner for the Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, so he's set to be a pretty busy guy. Here's is the official press release from CBS:

STUDIO CITY, CALIF. – Feb. 9, 2016 – Bryan Fuller, who launched his career writing for “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Voyager,” will return to the television franchise as co-creator and executive producer of the new CBS “Star Trek” series.

As previously announced, the new series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in early 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. The new “Star Trek” series marks the first original series developed for CBS All Access. The next chapter of the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said executive producer Bryan Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

“Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “His encyclopedic knowledge of ‘Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

“For the past 50 years, ‘Star Trek’ has been a groundbreaking franchise that not only changed the landscape of television, but made a significant impact on pop culture,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “When we began discussions about the series returning to television, we immediately knew that Bryan Fuller would be the ideal person to work alongside Alex Kurtzman to create a fresh and authentic take on this classic and timeless series. Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of ‘Star Trek.’ Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us.”

No details on which crew/ship/story the show will focus on, but Fuller has previously said that if he ever got the chance to return to the franchise that he'd take things back to the original Star Trek in terms of spirit and style.

The new series will launch in early 2017 with a preview airing on CBS, and then will shift exclusively to CBS All Access.

Well, DS9 is my favorites of all Treks when it comes to writing and the storyline, so this may actually turn out decent.

@blitzkreg -

not too many people share your assessment. i myself think DS9 was the best of all the Star Treks.

DS9 was pretty good.

@blitzkreg - DS9 is also my favorite. I started with the Jhem Hadar (spell check), finished the series, then went back to the begining. Easiest way to watch DS9. The start of the series is kinda slow. It's the best!

@blitzkreg -There's a lot of Trek fans that agree with you. DS9 is definitely the best of the Treks. Sisko is definitely my favorite captain. And some of the best side characters came out of that show too

I sort of know that many didn't seem to like DS9, but I always enjoyed it quite a bit!

I really am divided on this. I like Fuller his output on Pushing Daisies and Hannibal is fantastic. That said, he's going to a network (CBS) which isn't known for taking huge risks, and not only that he's taking over a franchise that is a pretty big CBS/Paramount property. I don't think he'll be getting the same freedom he's had on past shows. So it makes me wonder what this show will look like and how it'll play out. Time will tell I suppose.

Bryan Fuller: Too busy to revive Hannibal (even though he was approached by multiple streaming services) but not busy enough to go showrun a [frick]ing Star Trek series.

@JamesMann - Is that for real?? Shoot man I would take another season of Hannibal over another Star Trek movie anytime.

@JamesMann - I rarely comment here, but I'll do it when someone is outright lying or misinformed.

Fuller shopped it Netflx and Amazon but they turned him down due to the budget. Also there were contracts issues (ala Deadwood) that made things more complicated.

@huckfinnisher - No it's not true. Hannibal was turned down by all of the streaming services, and there were contract issues (source: http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/where-can-hannibal-go-if-netflix-and-amazon-are-out)

Rather he try and revive Hannibal. I just loved that show so much. Fuller does amazing work but his series always end up cancelled, which sucks. Hope that stops happening to him.

He's the show-runner for American Gods on HBO, the series based on the Neil Gaiman novels. WAAAAY more excited for that than this Trek series.

But, I'll def give Trek a watch. With Fuller behind it, it could be really good.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Have you tried reading the book? It's pretty good but I also find it to be sort of muddled? Dunno if you had the same experience amazing concept though.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Parts of it were a little muddled but in all it was a fantastic book. The part where Shadow is strapped to the tree was a little odd.

Will this be set in the old timeline or the rebooted one? I'm going to half hazard a guess and say reboot. Although, I would like to have seen something beyond the Next Generation timeline, like a century later give or take.

@Clonemenace - It will absolutely be in the new timeline because they want the show to sell movies.

Kind of wish this was Kurtzman/Orci free. But I'm looking forward to some new Trek. I find it odd that it's the 50th anniversary of Trek and we're getting nothing more than a movie this year. Look what Doctor Who fans got for that show's 50th anniversary. It was an embarrassment of riches.

I know for a fact what the next Star Trek series. I have had it personally confirmed by the man himself. The series is going to be the Captain Worf Series, that they were talking about making. This has been confirmed to me by Micheal Dorn himself. That is right I asked him about it and he said they are currently working on the series. He confirmed it on Twitter.

@gordonh7 -

doubt it.

it needs to be set apart from anything we've seen. not re-retread.

Since this is CBS produced, they may want to go back to the Prime timeline. If so it will be very interesting to see what they do. Maybe the uber nerds can finally get their Kirk resurrection in a one off episode and erase the Generations black spot on the franchise.

As much as I liked the Next Generation, I think DS9 and the original 1960s series are tied for Best Trek series.
