Disney has been screening dozens of A-list actors for the lead in Tron (previously announced as "Tron 2" and "Tr2n"), the live-action follow-up to the 1982 film that was one of the first films from a major movie studio to use computer graphics. Previous rumors have attached Hollywood staples Chris Pine (Star Trek), Ryan Gosling (Fracture) and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) to the film, but the top spot has gone to Garrett Hedlund, best known for his supporting roles in Troy, Friday Night Lights and Eragon.
Though the ticket sales of the initial release were modest—$33M with a $17M budget—the film inspired a popular video game and has gone on to become a cult hit.
Produced by Sean Bailey, Jeff Silver and Steven Lisberger—co-writer and director of the original—the new
Tron will be directed by Joseph Kosinski and has a budget topping $100M. Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as the enigmatic "Flynn." It was recently announced that Bruce Boxleitner ("Tron" in the original) will also be involved with the film.
Disney surprised attendees of the 2008 San Diego Comic Con by dropping some test footage of a "lightcycle" duel between a blue "program" cycle and a young Flynn (Bridges) riding a yellow cycle, while an older, bearded Flynn (also Bridges) looks on from above.
There has been no official release date given for this film, though it is expected to be released in 2011.
