SHANG-CHI Star Simu Liu Confirms Destin Daniel-Cretton Will Return To Direct Sequel

Updates on Marvel's plans for a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have been sparse, but it sounds like the movie is still very much on the studio's schedule...

Though Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce plans for a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the trades reported that a follow-up was in the early stages of development shortly after the first film was released.

Since then, rumors have done the rounds that the project may have been put on indefinite hold while the studio works towards the next Avengers movies, and director Destin Daniel-Cretton's status was said to be up in the air.

However, star Simu Liu has now confirmed that the filmmaker will return to helm the sequel.

"Oh man, I don't know to be honest," Liu told ComicBook.com when asked when we might see his character back in the MCU. "I mean, those things are so above my pay grade. I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, 'Hey, this is what your in and this is where you're going to show up. And, this is when you're going to be need to be blacked out for.' That's kind of generally what tends to happen. But, you know Destin is such a special filmmaker and we're very happy to have him on the sequel. So, he'll be working on that and we're really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he's going to do a brilliant job."

We still have no idea what storyline the sequel will follow, but Daniel-Cretton did confirm that he has some ideas for a follow-up back in 2022.

"There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie. There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there."

Are there any particular comic book arcs you'd like to see adapted for a Shang-Chi sequel? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers.

I thought the film was done well. Cretton could come back and do a great job

@WhatIfRickJames - the third act was a CGI mess akin to Black Panther's final act. Honestly those two films are structurally quite similar.

At this point I doubt there will be a sequel and if there is, then it’ll be like Cap 3 or Cap 4 where it’s secretly a Hulk or Avengers lite film.

@HulkisHoly - Why? First was well recieved and made three times it's budget dispite being released when COVID was still heavily impacting theatres. Sure it didn't make 2018/19 level of returns but nothing was until No Way Home due to how many cinemas were still closed in some regions, seating restrictions, mask mandates etc and a lot of the public avoiding any non-essential large gatherings at that time.

@HulkisHoly - I mean Simu said that the next Avengers movies needs to happen first before Shang-Chi 2, so no wonder its taking forever, cause the Avengers films keep getting pushed. so i assume Shang-Chi 2 is tied to what happens in Kang or Secret Wars.

It's hilarious that people think this crappy movie is getting a sequel.

@HistoryofMatt - usually when the main actor confirms a director, that’s a green light that it’s getting made. Also, the first one is awesome. One of the only solid ones from marvel in the last couple years

@HistoryofMatt - I know RT is a lousy site to judge anything by but the film had an aggragate score of 92% and 98% which tends to suggest the only crappy thing here is your opinion. If you had said it was overrated and mid you may have had a more reasonable sounding POV, or if you simply gave a reasoned critique as to why you had a low opinion of it like most others have (such as decent until the third act comments) rather than just 'crappy movie'.

@Apophis71 - you literally started with RT is a lousy site to judge and then you used scores from RT to make your point. Which is it?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/21/2024, 7:15 AM
@elcapitan - Both, but why I also stated it would be fair and reasonable to say it was overrated. RT only gives an indication of broad appeal ultimately not a good guide at all for quality such that a high quality niche film can score lower than an average quality film most still enjoy (hence why not a good guide).

When your getting aggragate scores over 90% from both critics and audience anyone making a blanket statement of crappy without qualification thus has an outlier view or just spewing hate with no sound reasons due to an agenda in almost all cases.

I am NOT saying Shang-Chi is an epic masterpiece, not even given my critique of it in fact. The film had some issues but generaly sound however, good but not great overall let down by the third act to some extent. However even a great film will not be to all tastes, doesn't mean it would be crappy but if not into CBM's at all unlikely to enjoy even the best of them much, if at all, for instance and same for any genre.

Before the ridiculous 3rd act, this movie was pretty good. Hopefully they lean more into the martial arts and less into the CGI nonsense if they make a sequel.

@mountainman -

Yeah I think if they took out Awkwafina or whatever her name is, and redid the mess of a 3rd act Shang-Chi could have been a great movie. I liked it, but it's not one I've ever had the urge to go back and rewatch.

I think the 3rd act needed to be more streamlined, it felt like they muddied the waters trying to give every character something to do/fight.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/20/2024, 4:21 PM
@TrentCrimm - My exact concerns. Akwafina is annoying in everything she is in and this movie was no exception. And the third act got dragged down by this goofy Trevor and Morris were, the lame training for the end battle montage, and the CGI army that could have been replaced by a smaller more intimate battle between Shang Chi and the Manderin.
TrentCrimm
TrentCrimm - 2/20/2024, 4:48 PM
@mountainman -

I think it's an effect of The Avengers and the team up trend in general, that's why so many of these solo movies, still manage to end up fighting with a team of some kind.

They want larger scale fights with more characters because movies like Endgame made bank, so they're trying to incorporate that style into everything.

mountainman
mountainman - 2/20/2024, 5:02 PM
@TrentCrimm - But now the audience is tired of the formula. Joker wasn’t a world ender and it did well. I think smaller CBMs could succeed, but likely not with $200 million + budgets.
Evansly
Evansly - 2/20/2024, 5:12 PM
@mountainman - They somehow seemed to learn that budget = quality which is most certainly not the case. Just give us more that works as a great self contained movie. That can work as a team up or solo outing just focus on writing not focusing more on how it fits into the bigger picture with the loss of quality.

Ant-man is a prime example, I don't really see it as anything other than advancing the Saga and don't find the story developed any of the characters

It was effign perfect is what it was. Totally different, leaned into both family drama and asian themes. Compelling characters and the 10 Rings. Not pushing for a sequel ASAP was a missed opportunity. With the lack of newer characters who fans actually want to spend a couple of hours with they should have jumped on it.

I guess they were so committed to the multiverse crap that they just put it to the side.

@marvel72 - funny thing is he confused shang chi with venom 2, a Sony movie 🤣
DankMan
DankMan - 2/20/2024, 7:18 PM
@Origame - Venom as a character had/has a lot more hype than Shang Chi, but it was definitely a worse movie than Shang Chi.

If Sony actually got Venom right in a movie, it would be incredible. Hard to do that without Spiderman though
Origame
Origame - 2/20/2024, 7:41 PM
@DankMan - 1) considering we're talking about the mcu post endgame, where completely unknown characters have started off with $1 bil at the box office, the simple fact shang chi is in the mcu and heavily involved in that universe is more hype than venom.

2) my comment was specifically aimed at his praise of shang chi simply being a movie that made $500 mil during the pandemic, a feat that shang chi didn't have and is instead something you can credit to venom 2.
DankMan
DankMan - 2/20/2024, 9:26 PM
@Origame - I disagree, Venom is a brand that has been around for 30+ years. The popularity of Spider-Man makes Venom much more popular than Shang Chi. Most of the mainstream audience hadn't even heard of Shang Chi before his movie was announced. Many people already knew who Venom was. Even without Spider-Man 3, Venom is still very popular in the zeitgeist.

And I think we can agree that a Venom movie done right should be better than a Shang Chi movie.
cubrn
cubrn - 2/20/2024, 10:59 PM
@Goldboink - It literally set up a sequel with the sister taking over the Ten Rings and Shang-Chi being pulled aside by Hulk and Captain Marvel concerning the nature of his rings. Also, they had Ta Lo be the gateway to a different dimension.

Great movie, tho
Origame
Origame - 2/21/2024, 4:39 AM
@DankMan - dude, it's part of the mcu. Most mainstream audiences didn't hear about captain marvel or black panther when they were released but that didn't stop them from both completely outgrossing every spiderman movie up to that point with one film.

You guys are horribly underestimating what the mcu as a brand means.

And no, I don't agree a venom movie done right should be better than a shang chi movie. They're brands. Nothing is stopping someone making something great out of shang chi. Unless this is just blatantly admitting marvel shouldn't bother with shang chi.
DankMan
DankMan - 2/21/2024, 1:52 PM
@Origame - Agree to disagree I guess. Venom's brand alone willed that movie to 500 mil. It definitely wasn't the quality. Maybe it was hype for Carnage too.

And I meant that a Venom movie should be better than a Shang Chi movie because of the name recognition and influence of the character. I get that they are both brands, but one brand is much bigger. Whether in the MCU or not.

Lose Awkwafina and we're good. The movie was pretty good outside of the cringe introduction of Trevor and Awkwafina's antics.

Had some genuinely electric choreography and visuals

@marvel72 - for me it definitely is. Only Doctor Strange and Spider-Man come close, but neither is just it. Both of those felt like multiple movies in one, whereas Shang-Chi had a very clear narrative imo.
