Since Marvel Studios first introduced the brilliant Iron Man to the world all the way back in 2008, people have been getting used to superhero movies having a certain tone to them; and go in expecting a fun, family friendly, joyful ride — which is exactly what Todd McFarlane's Spawn movie will not be.

In a recent interview with Nerdist, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane revealed that his upcoming movie will be something that people aren't expecting — at least when it comes to the tone that has lately become the standard for superhero flicks — calling it a joyless, dark and ugly movie.

McFarlane said that he wants to "go in a different corner that nobody is touching right now" by introducing a character that is a "deeply serious, dark, and almost disturbing R version of a superhero character".

"There’s no joy. There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway", explained McFarlane when asked to define the kind of movie that Spawn will be. He then contrasts his upcoming movie to the Avengers films, saying that fun lines aren't part of a horror movie and neither will they be in Spawn.

"There’s not a lot of funny in them[horror movies]. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time".

To be fair, Spawn has never been a character that would benefit from the "Marvel formula", so it is nice to see that McFarlane will not be trying to make it a fun blockbuster just for the sake of it, and will stay true to the source material he created.

Todd MacFarlane's Spawn movie still doesn't have an official release date.

And unfortunately Todd McFarlane your Spawn movie won’t be nearly as successful as it could be.

He'll be proven right, especially in the revenue dept.

@Tensorpants - yep, being a Blumhouse movie, this thing will cost only $10M to produce and gross $150-200M worldwide. The movie will suck but will be very profitable

"...Spawn film not being anything like an Avengers Movie"

It's not supposed to be.

I love how he has to specify that a dark, rated R film about a singular hero won't be anything like an ensemble Avengers film. Thanks for saying the obvious Todd!

@HeavyMetal4Life - We never would've known! Geez, what a guy.

@TexasAvenger - next he will say it's nothing like Aquaman because Spawn is set entirely on land.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Todd McFarlane is a hack. The guy has been on this "Spawn is a hard R superhero". The fact is since 2004 he has had so many failed attempts at reviving Spawn with various shows, comics, and movie opportunities and all failed because he has some "creative difference" with a studio or network.

The fact is Todd wants to make a Spawn R-Rated film with a budget of $120 million and assume a studio will be ok with risky to a loss at returns.

@SonOfAGif - he sounds like a poor man's Liefield. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie never makes it to production.

@HeavyMetal4Life - It won't. I used to be a heavy blogger on the Spawn.com site back in the day and veteran members were treated to his "test footage" for a new animated series back in like 2006. It was a blend of animation and CGI. It was supposed to revive the old HBO animated series. But Todd being Todd didn't do it because no Network wanted to hand him over the amount of money he wanted to make the show.

So he promised to create it with his own funding and then the project died. Then came his "I'm making a new Spawn film with my own funding." And here we are 12 years later with more b/s.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I hear it won't be anything like Ant-Man because Spawn isn't tiny.

@HeavyMetal4Life - well considering the road every superhero franchise is going in, i wouldnt be surprised if someone thought it was gonna be avengers style.

@SonOfAGif - Well, he's right. It won't be anything like the Avengers. The Avengers was actually made and released.

@Luminus - His edgelord behaviour reminds me of when Uwe Boll had a meltdown because nobody crowdfunded Rampage 3 and he blamed it on Marvel.

@SonOfAGif - Ugh. Have you seen the first one? Sickening. And I love horror movies, but that kind of senseless killing just didn't go over well with me. There's a fine line between serial killer and mass shooter in movies for me, apparently.

Just as long as they commit to a direction it should work. Frank Miller version of Batman didn’t work on screen because they didn’t commit whole heartedly to it. Batman shouldnt crack jokes, Todd knows his character better than anyone I’m sure it’ll turn out better than people are assuming. If I recall the HBO series of Spohn wasn’t very funny either, but it was one of the best animations I’ve ever seen.

@Chrome - Thank you! This fuggin guy gets it. Took the words out of my mouth. If this thing is even close to that HBO series we are in for a treat. Maybe HBO will even give him a live action show.

@Chrome - But nobody is expecting nor demanding Spawn to be a comedic hero like Deadpool. In fact those of us who grew up with Spawn know only The Clown/Violator is the only villain with a sadistic sense of humor. The fact that Todd has to remind people who Spawn is shows he is insecure about the character.

He is doing what Zack Snyder did when he was talking about the DCEU. Constantly telling people about why the characters have to be dark and souless in every interview.

@Chrome - You say todd knows his characters better then anyone...I employ you to watch Spawn Year on geekvolution, the show where we learned that todd is actually the worst writer for the character he created.
