Last night, Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new book, The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. As you might expect, it didn't take long until his discussion with the host turned to Spider-Man

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Tom Holland played a key role in bringing Disney and Sony Pictures together again after both sides walked away from the negotiating table, and Iger went into further detail about what the actor did to keep the webbed warrior in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"We had an event called D-23 and Tom [Holland] was there because he's a voice in a new Pixar movie called Onward. He said something and it was clear that the fans wanted Tom back as Spider-Man," Iger explained.

Apparently, Holland asked for Iger's phone number and email and the studio boss agreed to speak with him. "It was clear that he cared so much. He's a great Spider-Man. I felt for him and it was clear that the fans wanted all of this to happen." Iger said that after speaking to the actor, he "made a couple of phone calls" before touching base with the head of Sony.

"He called me and I called them," Iger said, also adding that "sometimes companies, when they are negotiating, they forget that there are other folks out there that actually matter."

Now, Spider-Man will return for a third solo outing in the MCU and he's also set to swing into a future Marvel Studios movie. Disney will contribute 25% towards production costs, while receiving 25% of the profits in the process. They also continue to profit from the merchandising rights.

Look, I don't know just how much of a deciding factor Tom Holland was in the process of Sony and Disney agreeing to do the sensible thing and continuing the partnership at least for a while. But I sure do believe that he was extremely unhappy with the break-up and did what he could to get them to make things right, and I appreciate whatever positive influence he'd had on the recent events.

@Kyos - yeah, i think it was more the fan reaction that was the turning point more so that Holland... fans like on this site. and Tom on stage right after the breakup was a perfect fan moment.

Love Holland and Spidey, but I’m not buying this story. I guess this made for a better tale than “we and Sony agreed to a percentage that was equitable to both parties.”

@NoAssemblyReqd - Pretty sure the head of Sony called Bob Iger with "Our stocks are tanking, our shareholders are unhappy, we messed up. Will Disney consider 25%?"

Lol what a load of bull. This was all just a negotiation play by both parties.

If there is any truth at all to this, it's kind of genuinely heartwarming.

Tom Holland is the Jiminy Cricket of massive corporate entertainment.

However it happened. I'm just glad it happened, and if Bob did go straight to Sony Japan that is hilarious cause that is exactly what had to happen last time. Clearly whoever is in charge of sony on this side of the pond is an idiot.

Regardless this deal happened and I hope it keeps happening. We can't lose Spider-Man....Not again.

@Mrcool210 -
But we lost Iron Man and Cap and Black Widow. The MCU seems to be different than DC, who have rebooted Superman and Batman a gazillion times. Spidey will be around for a while and then maybe not. Either way we weren't done with him yet and hopefully Sony and Marvel will find a way to share nicely, like maybe having the SonyVerse be part of the Multiverse like Into The Spiderverse.
