Much has been said these past few months about the important role Tom Holland (
Spider-Man: Far From Home;
Avengers: Endgame) played in helping Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures mend fences and strike a new deal that would keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for at least two more adventures, but it sounds like Holland may not have exactly been in the most coherent state of mind when he had his now-famous Spiday-saving phone call with Disney CEO Bob Iger.
While appearing on
Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, Holland revealed that he was sitting in a bar with his family and was actually quite drunk when he got the call from Iger. He explains the whole saga,
“
We were at D23 and the news came out and I was obviously devastated. It was awful. I asked if I could get Bob Iger’s email because I just wanted to say, ‘Thank you, this has been an amazing five years of my life. Thank you for changing my life in the best way and I hope that we can work together in the future.’ I got his email and I sent him the email and he responded very quickly saying he’d want to jump on the phone and asked when I was free.” Holland continues...

So, two, three days go by and then my family and I went to the pub quiz in our local town. We’re doing a quiz and I’m three pints in, haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number and I have a feeling. I’m like, ‘I think this is Bob Iger but I’m drunk.’”
Considering one of the most powerful men in Hollywood was on the other line, the inebriated Holland answered and proceeded to weep to Iger over the prospect of his fan-favorite Spider-Man being removed from the MCU entirely due to the lack of a new deal. He then made a last second plea to Iger, with the hope of pushing both sides into seeing reason. “
I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.”
The rest is history, as Sony and Disney did come to an agreement at the end of September, which would allow Holland to star in an untitled
Spider-Man 3 and in one yet-to-be-determined MCU movie.
