THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Returns To Theaters With Spidey's Lowest Re-Release Haul To Date

2012's The Amazing Spider-Man returned to theaters yesterday, but it didn't quite manage to live up to the heights set by Sam Raimi's trilogy. See how the reboot fared during its re-release here...

To celebrate Sony Pictures' 100th anniversary, every live-action Spider-Man movie is being re-released in theaters. Over the past few weeks, Sam Raimi's trilogy has returned to the big screen to much fanfare, but how did The Amazing Spider-Man fare yesterday evening?

Andrew Garfield is immensely popular among fans, but clearly not as much as Tobey Maguire.

The Amazing Spider-Man opened in 466 theaters and earned $510,000. That's quite a drop from Spider-Man ($683,000), Spider-Man 2 ($809,000), and Spider-Man 3 ($760,000). It might also make Sony think twice about ever making The Amazing Spider-Man 3, particularly if there's likely to be greater interest in Spider-Man 4!

This is still a strong result as it made a $1,100 average per theater.

Despite The Amazing Spider-Man not performing as well as its predecessors, Garfield remains incredibly popular. The reboot simply isn't considered a classic, and these numbers should take nothing away from what the actor brought to the table as Peter Parker. We'd expect The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to do even worse next Monday given how unpopular the sequel is.

Way back in 2012, we got to sit down with director Marc Webb to discuss the movie (side note: it was this writer's first on-camera interview and isn't great...Webb, however, was an incredibly nice guy and clearly passionate about Spidey).

"Listen, I like technical stuff. I like tinkering. I like working with people who have a technical nature and that was a really fun and exciting part of it," the filmmaker said of the experience of making The Amazing Spider-Man"But really, at the end of the day, the access point for me was the characters. And I think Peter Parker, as we all know, I think one of the reasons that we all like Spider-Man [is] he's relatable."

"He's just this kid like any other kid and I wanted to build the movie on a foundation of simple human relationships and the small little intimate details that happen between people. And in the first part of the movie there's a lot of that. Particularly in the first half of the movie. That's really quite similar to the emotional texture of (500) Days of Summer."

"Obviously there's a lot more action and a little bit more craziness," Webb added. "We didn't have a Lizard in my last movie but that was what my access point was and what made it intuitive to do."

Did you catch The Amazing Spider-Man in theaters yesterday?

Good. The Amazing Sony-Man movies sucked and Garfield was terrible.

It took a decade, but I'm glad people have wised up to what garbage these movies are.

The Raimi films are the best Spider-Man movies ever made to date, and the first Raimi film is the best superhero movie ever made to date, in my opinion.

Hail Raimi and Maguire!

@HermanM - Raimi captured something in the first Spider-Man that still works for me even today. It’s a good blend of nostalgia (Aunt May and JJJ casting) and new stuff (military Goblin suit and the organic webs.) It has stakes, it’s sweet, it’s exciting, it’s funny…just classic.

@SuperJefe - It helps that Peter and Norman Osborn’s relationship is probably the most classic hero/villain relationship other than Batman & Joker. Just dynamic.

@kg8817 - Yeah! I love when they first meet and bond over science nerd stuff. And the dinner scene where he’s bleeding … so freaking great.

@HermanM - "it's you who's out, Gobby.....out of your MIND!!!"

Wow, what a masterpiece line!

Maguire was terrible plus Raimi directed *and* wrote the laughably abysmal trainwreck Spider-Man 3.

Try reading an actual Spider-Man comic.

@JayI2 - "That's a cute outfit, did your husband give it to you?"

All of the dialogue is legendary. Spider-Man was funny, Peter Parker was a dork. It was the Ditko stuff come to life. Raimi got it right. Maybe you should read them.

But then, you probably love Miles Morales...

@SuperJefe - I think that movie perfectly captures the meaning of the Spider-Man comic in a way that none of the other movies have done as well since.

People often criticize that Tobey's not as jokey as Garfield (more than Holland I'd argue). And that it's an important part of the character because he's a nerd as Peter, but then the Spidey outfit is supposed to give him confidence and be freeing to him.

But the thing is, a scene like that upside down kiss? That perfectly nails that part of the character in a way that nothing has before. Peter chats with MJ, isn't confident, she blows him off to go on a date with Harry, he sees her followed, suits up, saves her, is way more confident with talking to her, then gets the kiss. Pretty much the type of fantasy every nerd in high school has had at one point or another (saving their crush from danger, being a badass). It's showing Peter Parker live the nerd fantasy, which is what made his character distinctive in the first place, that he's like us, the comic reader, the average nerd, not the billionaire, not the world class genius, not the godlike alien.

Look at the upgrade from TASM to TASM 2's costume.

You reckon there's hope for Gunn's Superman as well?

It wasn't a bad reboot at all, great chemistry between Garfield and Stone, dope OST too (Rip) pretty memorable moments with Spidey overall.

@Doomsday8888 -

I hope so. I mean, corenswet was hired for the long haul for a whole cinematic universe. So Superman can have an entirely different suit in his next appearance, assuming this first film is decent which I think it will be. I don’t think there’s really a high chance it won’t at least be a middle of the road B+ film. Will it be incredible? That we’ll have to wait to see.

TASM2 was the MOS of the series, visually stunning, great actors and great music dragged down by story. Too bad too much was crammed into the flick.

@SpiderParker - I feel that way moreso about 2 then 1
JayI2
JayI2 - 5/7/2024, 4:54 PM
@SpiderParker - It's more like the Batman v Superman of the series, AKA foolishly focusing too much on the world-building of planned future franchise movies like Sinister Six (Justice League) while the main villain focus was an incredibly poor version of Electro (Lex Luthor) and getting Harry Osborne who was rushed into becoming Green Goblin in his first appearance (Wonder Woman).

Its a shame since the first ASM was great in general, all they needed to focus in the sequel was a strong villain and more of the "Untold Story" of the mystery of his parents.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/7/2024, 5:11 PM
@JayI2 - yep I agree

That’s the one that felt more crammed to me then the first since they were trying to do alot

I thought Harry was alright though didn’t like his Goblin and Electro was poor from a character standpoint (though he was cool power wise) , liked him more in NWH.
JayI2
JayI2 - 5/7/2024, 5:21 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Yeah Electro himself was cool but the bumbling nerd Max Dillon alter-ego was like something out of an 80's superhero movie when clueless producers thought every comic book hero/villain character starts off as an ugly loser before becoming a super-powered hunk who oozes charisma. And they needed way more scenes between Norman and Harry which got cut out of the final version the same way all the Parker parents stuff did.

Looking back on it, TASM franchise probably had worse studio meddling than the DCEU. Damn shame.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/7/2024, 5:23 PM
@JayI2 - I don’t even mind that trope much but it just felt too cartoonish imo for the tone of the film.

Been going week after week, but won’t finish the marathon myself—seems to be the sentiment among several people. A couple people last night had never even seen TASM, so wonder if it’s audience familiarity or burnout. Curious to see if these number maintain, grow, or deflate when Tom’s weeks come around.
SATW42
SATW42 - 5/7/2024, 3:29 PM
@Madman - my guess is that next week is going to be the worst, with Tom's first Spider-Man being slightly better, Far From Home being around the same as TASM2 and then No Way Home being pretty good numbers. People forget that as successful as it was there was still alot of people who didn't venture out to the theatres for it, so I think they are going to get a bump from that. I personally didn't get to see it in theatres and considered going so I could experience it with an audience.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 5/7/2024, 3:09 PM
Well, you might be able to argue that Raimi’s movies are just older and weren’t seen be a generation while TASM may have been

I got to say, it seems like they've done a real shit job of advertising these re-releases
Madman
Madman - 5/7/2024, 3:45 PM
@Izaizaiza - it’s also super limited. Monday nights, theaters do multiple screenings, Tues-Thurs its one per theater, and for Fri-Sun its out to make space for weekend films. If it was more linear and better advertised, I imagine their revenue would double or triple
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/7/2024, 3:15 PM
I thought this was a decent flick , it had its issues or areas it could have improved upon such as more development on Conners imo..

However I like the performances & characters especially the chemistry between Andrew’s Peter & Emma’s Gwen was the highlight.

Also , the action was well done & fun imo especially the school fight with the Lizard!!.

TASM1 is easily the worst Spider-Man movie. Lamest villain, no style in the filmmaking, the ugliest Spider-Man suit, the most unlikeable take on Peter Parker and the story is overall just weak.

At least Spider-Man 3 still has Raimi's signature visual style and some decent scenes. At least TASM2 is super wacky (not in a good way, per say, but it does make it more watchable than the first one).
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/7/2024, 4:06 PM
@FinnishDude - to each their own but I like that Peter is flawed here and does kinda remind me of how Stan Lee would write him at times of being greedy , selfish or angry.
