Christopher Reeve was the True Superman

Christopher Reeve was the True Superman

He has not only made us believe that a man can fly but he has now allowed a man to walk.

Yesterday I was watching the news and and I witnessed something beautiful. I watched as Rob Summers a 25 year old man who in 2006 was involved in a car accident with a drunk driver that left him paralyzed from the chest down take his first steps.Doctors told Rob that he would never walk again and after three years of intense physical therapy it appeared they were right but then doctors decided to implant an electric stimulator onto the lining of his spinal cord. This woke up his damaged nervous system and within days he stood without help. As months went by he wiggled his toes, moved his knees, ankles and hips. Then finally took his first steps in over four years on a treadmill. Though Rob can only stand while in therapy sessions and the rest of the time he gets around by wheel chair and the doctors only allow him to use the device for several hours at a time.

Now this may not be a cure but it is a huge step in allowing people who are paralyzed to walk again. This step was made possible through funding of the research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. I am deeply affected by this new discovery because I grew up with my father in a chair and I know what it feels like not to be able to actually walk with your father. So for this I thank Christopher Reeve for what he's done because of his charity other children will be able walk with there parent or other family. Christopher Reeve was the real life Superman.

If you would like to read the article and watch the video click HERE I would post the video myself but I do not know how because this is my first article.I also provided a link to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation if you would like to visit.

@Bane- Yes, Reeve was very active in trying to get the stem cell research thing going. But he only started doing that after he himself had become a cripple. Truth be told...before his accident he was known to be quite snobby. Even had a spat with Jack O'Halloran on set to the point where O'Halloran almost attacked Reeve.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade here but to be fair and honest...Reeve only started trying to help after he himself had suffered. Doesn't make him a martyr by any stretch of the imagination. A TRUE martyr is someone who helps others without any real personal gain or reason. He just helps because it's the right thing to do. Reeve wasn't that. I'm sorry but he really wasn't.

@McGinnis- Nice article by the way.

Oh and if i get reported for this...just for expressing my honest opinion- NO profanity and NO oppressing other's opinions then that is fine because I also personally email with Jim and Nate constantly.

@ LP4 - it's all good homie, speak your peace. But at the end, I think it would be with everyone. When something tragic like this happens that's when that person tries to make a difference because he has now been affected.

Anyway, good article

LP4 - 5/21/2011, 4:09 PM
@blueorangeny- Thanks dude, yeah i just sick of people treating Reeve like the "sacred cow" it's as though everything Superman must go through him and they treat him as a martyr. It gets really irritating. That's why I'm sick of Reeve to be honest...

Like i said- it is a proven fact Reeve was a snob...an elitist. So eh...his story doesn't really seem all that heartwarming to me.

@LP4
I don't believe he's a martyr but you can't say that Reeve is the only one who does that. I know exactly what you mean charity isn't as pure as it looks a lot of the people who donate only donate because it has affected them. e.g. Michael J. Fox big supporter of Parkinson's research now that he has. This is due to the fact that you don't know what it's like until you are there. They try to make a difference and his foundations funding is going to help others so I don't care what he was or how he acted what he has done even if it is for some personal gain it means a lot to me.

By the way thanks on the comment about the article.

Oh and btw- I reported your comment, this is not the first time you've called me names. I never even called anyone names on here. I simply stated some facts about Reeve. Welcome your name to the Hall of Shame pretty soon.

@Bane- I can't remember exactly but there was some auditorium Reeve was in and he had some 3D visual he played for the audience and it was a 3D Chris Reeve walking. And he stated that he would one day walk again.

It was personal gain for him. Before he suffered...as you already know he never bothered to help those people.

As for my "martyr" remark i was just being sarcastic but people do put Reeve on a pedestal. One person on this site referred to reeve as being treated like a "sacred cow" i don't know...

btw- Totally off-topic but I'm excited for the new Superman film. It is a fresh start for the guy finally. I mean...if GL can fight in his movie, Thor can fight in his movie...Superman should be able to fight as well...only he can fight harder. =D
LP4
LP4 - 5/22/2011, 3:01 PM
@Nephillim- I'm not I'm just stating that people put Reeve on this pedestal. With every decision about Superman...it always must have Reeve references. And people DO elevate him to a God-like stature. Fact remains, he was a snobby prat before his accident. He only "contributed" towards stem-cell research to heal HIMSELF. That is no hero.

A hero is someone who does it out of sheer goodness.

Michael J. Fox yeah he's no hero either. Look I fed the homeless for a large portion of my life, I grew up in an above-middle class home. I grew up with a lot of nice things. But i fed the homeless because i felt in my heart it was the right thing to do. It aint like i suddenly became homeless and was like "damn i gotta help poor people because i'm poor now too" no it doesn't work like that.

btw- I only threatened mindworm with that reporting crap because HE resorted to foul language aka- name calling. Read my first comment, I used no profanity or name-calling towards anyone. I simply stated my honest opinion on Reeve and then there we go...mindworm aka- Reeve-blowup-doll started name-calling me. That is grounds for reporting. And I wasn't being a troll either before you try to accuse me because my comment was ABOUT REEVE and my honest outlook on his fight for stem-cell research.

furthermore @BaneKill- It WAS a personal-gain thing for Reeve. Reeve just wanted for HIMSELF to walk again. Before his accident...he was very rich...and very snobby.
LP4
LP4 - 5/22/2011, 3:17 PM
Also @Neph- Mindworm also proved my point...that unless people on here kiss the feet of Reeve, we get name-called with stupid, childish insults. Even the guy who made this article had to tell 'Mindworm' that it was unnecessary for him to use such insults.

I'm sick of kissing the feet of Reeve. I've done it for most of my life and I'm done with it. Furthermore Reeve DOES NOT represent Superman. Superman has been bound and chained with the Reeve-world for long enough. Snyder said that himself.

@LoganXX35:
You may disagree with people's opinion.
You may disagree with people's feelings about things.
Still, there's no need for name calling.
Simply say that you disagree and the reasons why.
That would make conversations better and more comfortable for everyone.

I, for one, have always liked Christopher Reeve. Superman The Movie was an amazing and inspiring film for me. And Chris Reeve really pulled Superman from comic book to life then. At least, that's how I felt about it.

I don't know much about his personal life and how he really acted or behaved as a person. I heard about his accident and how he did (or gave, to be precise) a lot to this cause. So, he stays a hero for me. And this story IS heartwarming to me.

Still, I don't feel LP4's comment to be offensive. I don't even disagree with it. If that's the information he possessed and it made him feel a certain way about Reeve, then it's his right. And LP4 is polite (even a little bit apologetic) about it.

I'm a bit busy these days that I don't come over that much anymore, so I don't remember reading your comment too often. That's why I won't report you. But if you keep this attitude, don't be surprised if lots of others WILL report you.

Please, man. We just want this to be a nice and comfortable place for a discussion. Disagree all you like. Just keep it polite. :)

@Everyone who won't stop bashing each other
There is no reason for the fighting. I put this article up because it meant a lot to me now if no one can just except that this a good thing and huge advancement no matter what you feel about Reeve then get out of here and don't comment please.

@Orehrepus- Thanks man. I never even bashed reeve. I just stated facts about the guy. I even said I felt happy for this guy to walk again due to Reeve. I don't know man...these people saying they want me to DIE are just being crazy.

THIS is what i was saying before...that cult-following Reeve made...some of the people are just waaaay too out there. I mean, theatening peoples lives and their family is just wrong on so many levels. I reported Logan's comment because it was a threat against me and those who i love.
-_-

@Logan- You're telling me you want my family to die and for me to die too? DIE? You're seriously going to threaten my life? Threaten my FAMILY? I pity you good sir, now FU*K off.

@Ichaos- [frick] you prick.

Furthermore @Logan- You can't even fu*king spell, what are you? Some immature little middle-schooler with no life? It's spelled- PIECE of shit, NOT "peace" of shit. You god damned IDIOT. If you're going to seriously threaten my life, at least spell the threat correctly.
LP4
LP4 - 5/23/2011, 12:41 PM
@LoganXX35- Y'know...I don't hate you as much as I did a few minutes ago actually. I just really pity you. I hope you don't use threats like that to any other people on this site, they might just be tempted enough to hunt you down and kill you.

I didn't "bash" Reeve. I simply stated why I don't feel he's the professed "hero" everyone makes him out to be. But if you wanna threaten ME and MY FAMILY with DEATH...then I have just one thing to say to you good sir...

I already reported your threat, over to Nate and Jim. Jim confirmed you'll be getting some nice, new troll badges to go with your already budding collection, you ASSHOLE.

And again- LEARN TO SPELL before you start throwing threats around like that. Otherwise you just come off as an idiotic, retarded, sociopath who couldn't spell worth a DIME and who probably dropped out of the 2nd grade because simple arithmetic got "too complicated" for your tiny, pea brain to comprehend.
McGinnis
McGinnis - 5/24/2011, 3:10 PM
@Everyone
You are all being childish because you can't just stop fighting and realize that this is more than about Christopher Reeve. Now please stop this non-sense because as I have stated this topic is very personal to me.

@LoganXX35
That really offends me that you would say you hope for someone to lose the use of their legs on this article. If you have not read it which I am sure you have, you would have noticed that it is about the celebration of a man who has gained the ability to walk for the first time in four years. You would have also noticed that I said my father was paralyzed my whole life he also died in 2005 so for you to say that here it really hurts me. No matter what anyone could say to you about Christopher Reeve it does not warrant that type of response.
LP4
LP4 - 5/25/2011, 10:11 AM
@McGinnis- Thank you. I didn't even really "bash" Reeve...but LoganXX35 is obviously a sociopathic nutjob.

But thank you for trying to mediate the situation.
