Why the New Flash 'Earbolts' Will Work

The Earbolts. Either you love 'em or you hate 'em.
But what if they are actually an even more faithful adaption than we suspected?

So our first look at headpiece from the fall 2014 Flash TV show has been released, as seen below:

By now I am expecting that you all have probably yayed/nayed the earbolts and collar to each of your respective heart's content. But what if they aren't our boy Grant just trying to make a fashion statement? I think the earbolts are really communication devices, and here's why:

They angle down, towards his face. You might not have noticed, but the comic Flash has his ear pieces pointing away from his face (sarcasm). They could have easily made live action lighting bolts that also point away from Grant's face. So there's some specific reason why the creators wanted the bolts pointing down.

They are irregular shaped. It would be really weird if that funky lighting bolt was the show's main symbol, because the lightning 'prongs' are completely different widths and lengths and overall it's not very nicely shaped, especially as Flash's famously simple emblem. Obviously, the lightning bolts are shortened to accommodate the jawline, but they didn't have to be so low on the side of the head to begin with (hint, hint).

And finally, in the comics, Barry Allen stored radio transmitters in his earpieces. With the fabric-ish cowl we see here, it might be a little hard to stuff an earpiece underneath the mask, so having it external is the only option; but the location of the comic book earpieces are too far away for Flash to practically be able to use their microphones. (I guess an earpiece underneath the mask could work but it might not be very comfortable. Batman gets away with it because he has it built into his armor-esque headgear/mask. Flash's suit is literally just simple fabric, so.... no.)

So two things to take notice of here: 1) The earbolts angle towards his face, to his lips exactly, and 2) are intentionally not replicas of his main symbol because they were placed so unusually low on his face, relative to traditional Flash earpieces.

I mean, really guys just look at them. Don't they remind you in the least of at least a pair of fanboy bad-cosplay Flash bluetooth earpieces?? Or is it just me? Or is this something obvious you already knew?

Thoughts?

If this is the case, I think this is a pretty cool way to make the earpieces practical while 'modernizing' the look a bit.

I don't like the cowl, I don't like the earbolts, but I'm still excited to see it in action.

@puffed What do you think is wrong with the cowl? I think Gustin looks a little young in it, but he looked young to begin with. I'm not sure how I feel about the leather, but forget it - I can't believe how faithful it is already!!

I hate the colour and the texture. The shape is good, I'm digging it, but those two things kill it for me. I like the casting, too. I think Grant'll nail it.

I like it. Looking forward to it. But it's definitely not suited to join the DCCU (Man of Steel).

It could be like Arrow where he upgrades/adjusts his suit throughtout the course of the show. Arrow just recently added a mask to his costume.

People actually made a big fuss over the ears? Really? Eh. As much as I love Barry Allen and the Flash I guess I'd make a fuss to if it was something minor with the Trinity.

Hey guys, puffed doesn't like the suit. Make sure to call him misguided and a sleeper Marvel agent for not swooning lol.

Did anyone get my point though?
About them being shaped that way so that they would hold his bluetooth earpiece, like in the comics?

Could be. If that's what they're going for with the earbolts, then yeah.. that's as good a way as any to disguise a communication device.

Good job on your first write-up, by the way. Welcome to the site.

@marvelstudios-Definitely not suited to DC movie universe why? I can't think of a reason. I mean if it were for the movies, bigger budget, might be better quality, but I don't see anything about it that would make it not work.

@cipher Thanks man! I've been on the site for a while, but hidden in the shadows - I just made an account Saturday.

@Netman Did you seriously just post your article again? Again?!
Look man, we already read it the TWO times you uploaded it earlier. I was proposing a thought that could satisfy both fans (the comm link functionality is still there) and casual watchers (everyone except you pretty much loves them)
I get you don't like them, and thats okay, but really, WE GET IT.

I'm pissed about the new "Hulk" New 52 Superman, and the bad Superman title, and (kill me) I'm getting a little bored of Batman Zero Year, but where is/are my rant(S)?

AND DID YOU EVEN READ MY ARTICLE?? IT WAS ABOUT HOW THEY LOOKED LIKE MORE REALISTIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES THE COMIC'S TRADITIONAL ONES!!

WHAT THE HECK MAN do you just come on here to rant and dont read??

Even in the general audience, who doesn't know what the Flash looks like? But, still assuming that...

Okay sure, but how does he talk into his ear then?

It is has a similar size/shape, the exact orientation, and the perfect position on his head for a bluetooth set. To be a communication device, even in the comics, it would need to be closer to his mouth than the back of his head. I admit to being nuts but at least consider the merits of it being oriented towards his face. It suggests communication, and I'm not the only one who sees this

(read above comments)

But truce!! I'm done here.

Peace~
